Quran-burning preacher defines “idiot”

A few years back, I hosted a weekly radio program, “Bob Barr’s Laws of the Universe.”  In recognition of the fact that the first Law of the Universe is, ”The World is Full of Idiots,” each week we would identify one or more members of that large class of persons as rising above the rest, as “Idiot of the Week.”  At the final show each year, we would announce the idiots par excellence as “Idiots of the Year” awardees.  Given the plethora of idiots from which to choose over the course of the year, identifying those truly outstanding idiots worthy of annual recognition was a difficult task; but one we somehow managed to accomplish.

Were I still hosting the show, I have no doubt that for the final show of 2010, one of the finalists for “Idiot of the Year” would be the Rev. Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida.  Jones is the so-called preacher who is hosting and calling for a Quran-burning party this coming Saturday, September 11th.  Unlike pastors of bona fide churches, Jones’ “Dove World Outreach Center” spends its time and resources preaching hatred of Islam; something its webpage refers to as, ”getting up.”

While the primary focus of “DWOC” (an acronym the Center itself uses for short-hand references to itself) is Islam, it might just as well be Judaism, since the Center identifies the cardinal sin of Islam to be its belief that “any religion .  .  .  which teaches that Jesus is not the Son of God” is “of the devil.”

Apparently oblivious to much of reality, Rev. Jones appears to care not that staging a highly-publicized book-burning event concentrating on the Quran may — as Gen. David Petraeus has noted from his perspective as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan — place American troops in danger.  Jones certainly cares even less that Attorney General Eric Holder accurately describes the planned pyrotechnic pic nic as “idiotic.”  In this assessment, however, both Holder and Petraeus are describing the Gainesville preacher in overly generous terms.

Describing this guy as an “idiot” does a diservice to idiots.
If one person dies as a result of his callous God-ego trip, he should be brought up on charges of sedition or possibly murder 1.
His 15 minutes can cause fatalities. I just hope someone burns a bible in clear view of his circus act to mitigate the effect of his self-righteous and cowardly act.

Bob,

Joined any new churches lately? I recall you joining one in Woodstock several years back only to never return again. Joining churches only to get your name called out by the pastor for political purposes isn’t cool, Bob! You’re better than this, right?

I agree with most everything you write about and your courage in doing so but there is something disingenuous about you that concerns me. Or I could be wrong–maybe you moved to another precinct the next day?

Are we so afraid of what Islamic terrorists will do that people anywhere in the world can’t burn a Quran or draw a picture of Mohammed with a bomb in his turban? Muslims need to get over themselves. Christianity, Judaism, and other religions are made of fun on a regular basis. Lighten up Muslims. I thought your religion promoted non-violence?

Let’s see, what does this have in common with Islam . . . ? Oh, I know, it all involved religion. Take a look at the world, folks. How much good is religion doing versus the bad?

Intolerant Muslims

Intolerant Christians

Intolerant Jews

Intolerance, absolutism, theocracy, etc. All preached by the Abrahamic religions. Priests molesting kids, suicide bombers, stonings . . .

The list goes on.

All in the name of god, eh?

Rev. Jones’ plan to burn Korans on the anniversary of 9/11 seems very similar to Kristallnach, when on the 9th and 10th of November 1938 91 Jews were killed and 25,000 to 30,000 were arrested and placed in concentration camps. 267 synagogues were destroyed and thousands of homes and businesses were ransacked. One would imagine that the smell of burning Torahs and that of burning Korans would be almost identical.

I thought this was America where a person had freedom of religion ? I guess not because burning of the Quran is the lowest of the low as far as disrespect. When a person thinks that his Boo Boo doesn’t stank as bad as the next something is wrong. No sin is greater than the other. He who is without sin cast the first stone ! With that being said not all Muslims are bad people just like Christians, Jews, etc… Wake Up America ! And Donna P, I appreciate your father and grandfather protecting our country but this act does not help in that cause.

Are there Florida National Guard troops in Afganistan or on call to be in Afganistan? Either way, the Florida Governor, as Commander of The Florida Guard, should declare this act as a high risk to his and other U.S. troops and go in and remove the books, disperse or arrest the crowd and arrest the preacher. we don’t protect people from crooked banks in this country, so why should we protect any misnamed rights of this idiot. We should be far more concerned about the safety of those who are protecting us. To think that we have real constitutional rights in this country is a joke. We would be shamed around the world as hypocrites if we don’t stop this inbred, snake handling swamp trash from endangering our troops in such an irresponsible manner. People wouldn’t be worrying about Christians killing Americans because of it. I think that is his point. Read that precious book of Muslims and see why. I am working on my second time through it. If you do you will not wonder why everywhere there are Muslims there are problems. Not all Muslims are bad people, but not all Muslims want to be Muslim. Too bad for them if they become something else the Quran calls for all Muslims to kill him/her. First let me say burning the Quran is childish and stupid; but so is allowing the burning of the American flag but some how that doesn’t seem to upset the liberals. Second, 1 John explains in no uncertain terms that ANY doctrine that teaches that Jesus is not the Son of God is of the devil and that includes any religion or scientific theory. He is right about that. That doesn’t make them devil worshipers or the enemy; just lost and wrong.

I think this guy is an idiot and in know way represents the example Christ set; however, I am more concerned with the fact our nation is more worried about offending the people we are already at war with than preserving a constitutionally protected act. Their terror is winning. By our fear of how they will react THEY are defining how we will behave. Isn’t that the goal of terrorism anyway.

The outrage across the world against americans would be enormous.

Muslims also stone women to death by the way whom are accused of cheating on their spouses only if 2 or more people say it happened. John 8: “42Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. 43Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

I have the misfortune of having this idiot in my town. He is a complete media fabrication. A year ago, he was just a pastor of 50 and an eBay furniture seller. Because of the media, he is now an international “celebrity” known in the highest ranks of our government. Because of him, our local public school system has school uniforms this year. For 20 years, I have lived within a mile of his church (I’m sure he hasn’t been there that long) and never knew it was there. Even after he put up his lame stenciled “Islam is of the Devil” sign and started a stir, it was months before I realized I lived so close. He was a nothing until the media pumped him up.

The lesson of this whole thing is that if you are a hate-monger, the media is your best friend. They will denounce you all the way, but they will spread your message far and wide for free. That crappy $5 sign of his has bought him millions in publicity.

I certainly understand Gen. Petraeus’ legitimate concerns for his troops

However, the root problem lies with religious fundamentalist tools, a category to which radical Islamists and Rev. Jones both belong.

So long as people believe they must “duke it out” on behalf of their respective supreme beings (whom one would think ought to be able to defend themselves, given their omnipotence and all), this sort of idiocy will never cease.

I also think there’s a difference given that Rev. Jones isn’t threatening to harm anyone in this instance, whereas the radical Islamists probably are; hence the General’s words.

June 18, 2007, Muslims ransacked, burned and looted a school and convent that are part of the Gaza Strip’s small Romany Catholic community. Crosses were broken, damage was done to a statue of Jesus, and books were burned.

December 10, 2006, Australia , Muslim Students Urinate, Spit On Then Burn Bible. The Bible desecration took place last week at a school camp held near Bacchus Marsh, about 50km west of Melbourne

July 3, 2003, Muslims rioting over the arrest of one of their clerics torched five churches in Bura. No one has been charged over the burning of the churches. Christian leaders are still waiting to see if the arsonists will receive justice or impunity.

No one pays attention to items such as listed above. Of course no one wrote a column to call these “Muslims” idiots either.

‘They would like me to mention their name’
This man (no name used) is looking for his ‘15 minutes of fame’.
Let us please NOT let him have it by putting him on every news cast and in every publication. The radicals will not see that 99.9% of Americans are against such actions….they will only see this one, to quote the newspaper article I read, “fringe character who doesn’t deserve special attention”.

If a sect of Islam were to have a bible burning day would the citizens of the U.S. have a national uprise and go around shooting guns and making a general disgrace of themselves, I think not. As far as i am concerned, the Muslim radicals have taken charge when the Attorney general has to have a talk with this Gainesville minister, Gary Jones to dissuade him from his burning holy book picnic.
As for putting our troops in danger, they are armed, have armored support, air support and the most sophisticated weaponry at their disposal.
What was it that Islam got all upset about before, somebody in Sweden drawing a cartoon? I say when a country is judged by 1 minister and 30 followers, that was the number in his church last week can be singled out by the Muslims as indicative of what everyone feels or thinks and we go for it, were letting ourselves in for a never ending conflict, I have given in to bullies myself and I CAN TELL YOU WITHOUT ANY RESERVATION, it never made my days any easier.

As we all know, general Patreaus knows, Hillary Clinton knows, the extremist christian Koran burners from Florida know, the ground zero mosque planners know and president Obama knows there was not a single Muslim involved in the 9/11 crime.
We are all involved in playing the game as if there was a Muslim attack back in 2001. The US media, the BBC and all the world wide networks playing the same psychological game, because they receive their money from the same banking cartel with its main office in London.
The Koran burning scam just before the 11th of September 2010 is designed to distract the simple US citizen from (after nine years!) the real story behind the impossible Muslim conspiracy plus the impossible destruction of 3 World Trade Center skyscrapers in 2001.

While I do not disagree with our host’s appellation for Pastor Jones – by the way, I thought Terry Jones was a founder of Monty Python’s Flying Circus – I think some perspective is necessary. “Idiot of the Year” requires comparatively serious consideration, and given that ObamaCare passed this year, with potentiality for far-greater long-term adverse repercussions for the US, surely there is a cast of greater candidates within our Congress. Or given that Fearless Leader nominated Lady Kaga to the Supreme Court despite her history of profound opposition to recruiting efforts by our noble military, one would have to consider Chauncey for the title, second year running.

also the definition of an idiot is someone who does the same thing over and over again and expects different results, republicans are a great example of this, we’ve tried having every war we can and entitlement programs for the rich intensively for the last 30 years, note to self: IT AIN’T WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!! beating that dead horse of blaming the boogeyman liberal is not going to fix anything either. time for the people who preach ‘united we stand’ the most to stop dividing our country for all the wrong reasons and start working together for America otherwise we are surely doomed. add religion in our government to the mix and you can just open up your history books and see things coming to an awful end, oh wait, that’s what they are hoping for, the rapture, armageddon, neither are good long term business plans. and to nothing and remain neutral is guilt by omission. that’s why the meek deserve to inherit the earth, after i’ts just a red hot smoking wasteland, should spoke up and not in favor of evil rich selfish greedy people who show the greatest dishonor by hurting others while hiding behind god, patriotism and little children. shameless cowards.

It would make me really angry to see a church burning a science textbook. However, I would not attempt to infringe on their absolute right to do so, nor would I retaliate.

We tell noble lies of a land of the free. We like to think that we value liberty enough here to allow for the free expression of things we personally might disagree with or find offensive; most recently, proposals for a near ground zero mosque and now the [private] burning of a popular book. Many people are very offended by one or both of those proposals.
Yes, there are significant security implications indeed. We consistently sacrifice liberty for security, something Franklin warned against. If government attempts to prohibit the burning, it will reinforce terrorists’ belief that fear is an effective way to get what they want. Further, fear is not a legitimate reason to attempt to strip people of their rights.
What type of message would it send if we try to deny either group such basic fundamental rights as freedom of belief/religious practice and freedom of speech/free expression? While both of these proposals are insensitive and offensive, so long as they are peaceful, they must be allowed. While perhaps temporarily uncomfortable, these occasional tests and trials regarding issues of liberty, tolerance, Constitutionality, and the human ability to challenge each other intellectually with arguments and protests (as opposed to trying to solve problems with military force or any other violence) may be crucial to reaffirming our commitment to the values we profess.

This comment perfectly illustrates the problem of American civil religion. Many of us equate patriotism with Christianity; we do not know the difference between the U.S. flag, the Stars and Stripes, and the Cross of Christ. Burning a bunch of the Gideon New Testaments would be the equivalent of burning the Quaran; it has nothing to do with burning the Stars and Stripes. Most U.S. citizens worship the U.S. flag and will kill for it, but few U. S. citizens worship the God of Abraham (and Jesus who forgave his enemies while willingly hanging on the cross to which they had nailed him to die).
In a word, we are not idiots; we are idolaters! We worship the American way of life!

I guess if people really leave the muslims alone their wont be any more suicide bombings. Every religion has its demerits but the demerits are actually in the people and not in the religion as such. Even I hate the stonings of women but their are other ways of changing things instead of burning the sacred scriptures. Live and let live. And yes I am a muslim and I proud to be one and one thing I slam never preaches killings not under any circumstances. So people, stop blaming islam and blame the people who have redefined its meanings…

Join the event on Facebook, Everywhere USA

Sign up to pledge to read from the Qur’an this September 11 as an act of solidarity with your Muslim brothers and sisters around the world. Not to take away from the solemn dignity that all people deserve who were affected by the horrific violence of terrorists that day, but take at least a moment to learn something new about a world tradition that has given us all so much, and to counter the awful sentiments of hatred and ignorance that can drag any of us down if we aren’t careful.

Well, Bulldwag and others. Not only Muslims burned the American flag . All peoples invaded or oppressed by USA did so, whether they are Muslims , Christians or Buddhists. Rev. Jones could burn the flags of Iran, Saudi Arabia or Egypt . I never heard of any Muslim burn the bible or the Torah. I am sure that people like rev. American Muslim organization says President Obama is wrong
August 15, 2010
AIFD
American Islamic Forum for Democracy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“PHOENIX (August 15, 2010) – Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, a devout Muslim and the president and founder of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy issued the following statement regarding remarks from President Obama on the proposed mosque and Islamic Center at Ground Zero:

“As an American Muslim whose family fled persecution in Syria and as someone who has stood in the face of some resistance to the building of many of our houses of worship in the U.S., I fully understand the value of standing for religious freedom in America. But President Obama’s statement about the Ground Zero mosque at last night’s White House Iftar dinner is the latest example of political correctness gone awry.

The President commented that:

“Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country. And that includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in Lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances. This is America.”

Yes, Mr. President, this is America and you have fundamentally misunderstood the stakes in this discussion and the sentiments of the American people. Instead, you have focused on the very issue that the Islamist propagandists wish you to– the narrative that Americans somehow need lectures about Islam, Muslims, and religious freedom.

Your message to Americans will be spun on Al Jazeera and by Islamists across the world that President Obama reassured a friendly global Muslim audience at the White House Ramadan dinner that he was going to remind Americans about the principles of religious freedom for Muslims since they seem to be trampling over those principles in the local dispute at Ground Zero in New York.

Mr. President this is not about religious freedom. It is about the importance of the World Trade Center site to the psyche of the American People. It is about a blatant attack on our sovereignty by people whose ideology ultimately demands the elimination of our way of life. While Imam Faisal Rauf may not share their violent tendencies he does seem to share a belief that Islamic structures are a political statement and even Ground Zero should be looked upon through the lens of political Islam and not a solely American one.

As a Muslim desperate to reform his faith, your remarks take us backwards from the day that my faith will come into modernity. I do not stand to eliminate Imam Rauf’s religious freedom; I stand to make sure that my children’s religious freedom will be determined by the liberty guaranteed in the American Constitution and not by clerics or leaders who are apologists for shar’iah law and will tell me what religious freedom is.

‘Park 51′, ‘The Cordoba House’ or whatever they are calling it today should not be built, not because it is not their right to do it – but because it is not right to do it.” Mr. President, your involvement in this issue is divisive not uniting. Your follow-up stating that ‘you will not speak to the wisdom of the construction of that mosque and center’ indicates a passive-aggressive meddling on your part that only marginalizes those Muslim and non-Muslim voices against it while pretending to understand both sides of the debate.”

http://www.aifdemocracy.org/news.php?id=6131

Interesting how the Islamists think nothing of the damage they are doing to hundreds of 9/11 families by buidling the mosque at Ground Zero but get their panties all in a wad over someone burning a couple of Korans.

If you doubt that most U.S. citizens practice American Civil Religion, then why do we call our flag, “Old Glory,” when only Glory belongs to God (of Moses, Jesus and, yes, Muhammad). DJB asks the correct question, What Would Jesus Do? [A: Not burn books, I am certain; Jesus said, “And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” (John 10:16, KJB) If Jesus were to retell the story which we now call the “Parable of the Good Samaritan, He would identify the one who shows mercy as a PALESTINIAN. That’s how radical and liberal, for you conservatives that Jesus is!

Perhaps, idiots and idolaters are the same. We worship the Stars and Stripes, not the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (and Jesus) (and Muhammad). If all of the Christians, Jews and Muslims were to worship this one true God, then idolatry — and most idiocy — would cease. Terry Jones is an idiot–and an idolater! Are you?

Burning a Quran is almost as idiotic as, well, building a mosque next to the debris that was the World Trade Center. But EVEN MORE idiotic is the “politically correct” response of the Obama Administration:

David Axelrod, senior adviser to President Barack Obama told CNN Wednesday morning: “The reverend may have the right to do what he’s doing but it’s not right. It’s not consistent with our values … I hope that his conscience and his good sense will take hold.”

Where, oh where, Obama was your faux indignation when the idea of a mosque next to the World Trade Center was being proffered? Shouldn’t you defend the good reverend on the basis of his freedom of speech? Where was the indignation of the Muslim world when this mosque proposal was being floated around the international media? They were silent, very, very silent.

A thought experiment: How long before Salvador Dali’s “blasphemous” caricature of Mohammed burning in hell is expunged from art history classes? How about Auguste Rodin? or Gustave Dore?

Each of these artists caricatured Mohammed’s suffering in Hell— as related in Dante’s trilogy “The Divine Comedy” [Inferno XXVIII, 19-42]. http://zombietime.com/mohammed_image_archive/dantes_inferno/

The same forces that repeatedly plot to destroy the fresco of Dante’s Inferno in Bologna’s Church of San Petronio remain at work today.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/2205263.stm

And if Western media remain unwilling to fight this battle, what’s to stop the global Taliban from silencing any and every expression Muslims deem “offensive”? Archived depictions of Mohammed serve as a poignant reminder that such imagery has been part of Western AND ISLAMIC culture since the Middle Ages— and serve as a resource for those interested in defending free expression.

Regardless of how idiotic this Pastor is, what he’s doing is no worse than a group posting anti-religion billboards (see AJC web site lead story right now). No worse.

If American troops die overseas he is NOT responsible. The people killing our troops or ordering them to kill our troops are responsible, regardless of what motivates them. First, I am a practicing Evangelical Christian, Secondly I am not American. However, the great aunt of my grandson was injured on 9/11. My problem with Terry Jones is quite simple: By burning, and thus desecrating the Qu’ran, he is, in my view, also desecrating the Bible. Jesus told us to turn the other cheek. Islam holds the Gospel to be the inspired word of God, as it does the Pentateuch. In fact the Qu’ran specifically forbids the desecration of these books, and considers those who do so to be heretics. Thus the Taliban, and their ilk, are considered by true Muslims to be outcasts of the faith. Taking this one step farther: It is not the terrorists Terry Jones is insulting with his actions, but rather the true Muslims who stand against these terrorists. Lastly by his actions he is disobeying Christ’s own preaching, disobeying the instructions given by God (He believes the Bible to be the literal word of God), and thus desecrating our Holy Book, The Dible.

Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! ”

Scout – You are, in fact, illustrating my point. The so – called Islamic Republics have little to do with, Islam, but everything to do with a polluted version of the religion. One of the problems for Muslims is the very nature of the Qu’ran (The Book of Recitations) as it is written in Classical Arabic. Unfortunately many, if not most, of the religious leaders in these countries have learned the words by rote, but have little understanding of the meaning, thus they pollute the teachings of Muhammad. In the same way, poor translations of the Bible make its meaning unclear: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1, v 1). Countless people misunderstand this because of the mistranslation of the Greek word ‘Logos’. Logos means: “the all powerful commanding word, or force, behind the Universe”. Now rephrase the verse using this translation. It now has much greater, clearer meaning.

My point is quite simple: If you confuse flag burning with holy book burning, then you are a worshiper of idols. Is that clear enough for you? Flags just represent nations, but holy books represent the Word of God to those who believe, whether the book is the Torah, the New Testament or the Quran. We pledge allegiance to a flag “and the nation for which it stands,” but we worship the God whose Word that we believe is written in a holy book. Burning a holy book is attempting to destroy the Life in it.

This man in Florida is not the first to burn the Quaran; the Spanish Inquisition is a sad time in the history of Christianity, when Qurans were burned by “christians.”

“In his 1821 play, Almansor, the German writer Heinrich Heine — referring to the burning of the Muslim holy book, the Qur’an, during the Spanish Inquisition — wrote,

‘Where they burn books, so too will they in the end burn human beings.’

(’Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen.’)

“One century later, Heine’s books were among the thousands of volumes that were torched by the Nazis in Berlin’s Opernplatz.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_burning

“Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (December 13, 1797 – February 17, 1856) was a journalist, an essayist, and one of the most significant German romantic poets. Jewish by birth, he converted to Christianity as an adult.”

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Heinrich_Heine

Is that not interesting that a German Jew, who converted to Christianity, recognized the sin of burning the Quran by Christian during the Spanish Inquisition (which was a persecution of Jews and Muslims)? How ironic, also, that his books were burned by Hitler, who eventually burned human beings too — the Jews — after gas chambers!!!

“Where they burn books, so too will they in the end burn human beings.”

Christian Johann Heinrich Heine, unlike you — DAWGFAN 86 and your allies — saw the evil in book burning. Good men and women must stop persons who burn books before the evil persons become “mad” — and bold enough — to burn human beings!

Bigots like Palin count on this ignorance and use fear to stir up the likes of folks like the pastor who is bent on burning the Qur’an. Unbalanced folks like Palin and the pastor are oblivious to the damage they cause not only to the good, hard working people of the Islamic faith, but against all allied troops in Afghanastan. Quoting from the Bible is somewhat pointless. There are so many translations out there, each one reflecting the viewpoint of the translators, that quotations often become points of dissension between believers. If you really want to understand what the Bible says, then study Ancient Hebrew and Classical Greek, Do thid together with a study of the culture of the period in which it was written. Then you may come to a closer understanding of its meaning.

I’m also not a christian so stop the whinning about “WWJD”. It’s obvious his way failed..he got nailed to a stick by turning the other cheek.. I intend to be the one holding the hammer in life, not the one nailed to the stick.

The reason I support burning the koran is the double standard. Muslims want free reign to trash womens rights, flags, anything non islamic..yet they demand respect for their little comic book ..stereo instructions for how to live in the 6th f’king century…

I refuse to give them that respect.

Ken, Wouldn’t blame you for defending yourself, but to deliberately exacerbate an already bed situation is plain stupidity. The point is that sabre rattling doesn’t help. What has happened with all three of the Abramic faiths is that they have become politicized. With Islam, in particular, the male – dominated culture of the individual countries has imposed itself over the pure Islamic beliefs which has led to a pollution of the faith. This certainly doesn’t make their behaviour right, but neither does it mean that we should punish all muslims for their faith. Immediately we start burning books we start stifling free speech.

The fastest growing religion today is Islam and the reason is quite obvious. Have you heard of any Islamic leaders burning the Bible or the Torah. We are the idiots when we say it is ok to burn the Qur’an, for how would we like it if other faiths burnt our Bible.

I get annoyed when I read crap like “I support burning the koran is the double standard. Muslims want free reign to trash womens rights, flags, anything non islamic..yet they demand respect for their little comic book ..stereo instructions for how to live in the 6th f’king century…”

It was obvious to me that the person who made the above comment has never read a page, let alone, a sentence in the Qur’an. Christians have to start being less arrogant, more intelligent and tolerant of other religions. Then maybe one day, Christianity will be the fastest growing religion!

What a Fool. – the spelling of Qu’ran. The Koran spelling is used an England, there are several phonetic ways of spelling the arabic word. In reference to your earlier post, it would suggest that Scout has the UK somewhere in his background. Being of a UK background myself, but with many years in Canada I am amazed at the hatred which I have witnessed in this thread. Last time I gave my testimony I used the Qu’ran to back up my Christian views, pointing out that, in my opinion, Muhammad made one mistake in saying that he believed in the virgin birth, but then said “but God forbid that he has a son” But he also said that Jesus’ mission was very important in teaching people the ‘right way’. I believe that He was truly God and Truly man. He gave us few rules to live by, but at the same time told us to obey the law. The only law he recognized was Talmudic law, the basis of the whole of our faith. As Christians we no longer live under Talmudic law, but rather we should try to live in the spirit of Talmudic law. Muhammad stipulated that the Gospel was holy. The trouble is that neither side in this struggle are prepared to follow the basic tenets of their respective faiths. Inflammatory speeches, and actions, on either side are equally evil, they are designed only to stir up “patriotic feelings” of hatred of the enemy. Intemperate speech and action is, in and of itself, a grave sin.

Moslems have been at war with Christianity since the middle ages with many ruthless attacks and murders. The most recent was the Moslem Army grief counselor who savagely shot to death 13 innocent military and civilian personnel at Fort Hood Texas 4 months ago. The coward was captured alive and is now going through the bleeding heart liberal hogwash that permeates the government.

If this congregation decides to burn the Moslem books so what? Armageddon is on hand now with bankrupt corrupt government, states and government decimating budgets and layoffs of 8,000,000 American jobs that will never come back. Ken R – don’t know what happened to my reply to your last comment, but here goes again: I have no fear of death, in fact I would far rather be with the love of my life than living the lonely existence I do without her. Re your views on religion, consider this: The watch on your wrist just fell together one day, quite by accident. What a crazy statement! Any idiot knows that some guy designed it, and then the factory produced it – what a loser that guy Ian must be to think that it fell together. Now take a look at the world around you. The most simple living thing just fell together, some kind of accident (I know, let’s call it the BIG BANG) caused it to happen. Is it not more far fetched to think that the infinitely more complex universe just fell together? As for the truth of the Bible – I as most Christians believe the Bible to be a body of truth, not a body of literal truth. The Old Testament shows the development of the People of Israel. We believe it to be divinely inspired. The bible as we know it cannot be literally true, it is a translation, with all the inherent defects of a translation. Finally You made the very point I have been trying to make all along, human weakness (both moral and intellectual) has led to the death and destruction we have seen through the centuries. All because we talk instead of listen.

its disappointing to be reading about this and having the realization that nothing can be done to stop this man (so-called preacher). When I think about it, it seems like everyone is aware of an atomic bomb thats going to explode killing thousands, maybe millions of people, yet no one can stop it. I know within America, people have the freedom of expression, but shouldnt this have a limitation due to the outcome of what it may cause upon others, especially for those who serve in the military.
My husband and I (US nationals) both serve in the Army, and we stand proud in serving the United States, but this is disturbing news, seeing as how an American (this preacher) can do such a thing, or publicize such a thing. I cant imagine having to lose my husband in this war we face due to the ignorant act of an American (the people we fight for). It is also disturbing to know that this man may not be stopped.

p.s. To Matthew Cole: I understand a bit of where your coming from, but you have to understand, we are already at war and are hoping to make peace so that all the soldier who serve to keep you and millions of other people safe can come back to their families… Honestly, until you know what its like to wait for your husband, wife, son, daughter, or any member of your family to come back from war (thats if they dont die out there), then you wont really feel the desperate need of having peace over all this chaos that has already taken part. And as for the First amendment, if your given the freedom to do something, do so, but be considerate as to where no harm can come to others (eg. the soldiers who may have to continue risking their lives in the War on terrorism).

Everybody is MISSING THE POINT. We should discuss OBAMA allowing the building of a Muslim Mosque at “Ground Zero” where thousands of innocent Americans lost their lives to Muslim zeal “in the name of Alah”. This is where it started. Is Obama not the idiot? Does he not understand true religion? Or does he want a Muslim state where lady Clinton’s husband would have his toti chopped off by a Muslim sword for his fornication? So also Tiger Woods and all the other idolaters and adulterers. Christians deal with the religious issues peacefully. But the Koran does support violence in order to protect the Muslim faith. Go and read it! Take this to Obama. He needs to be educated in religious matters. And he will have to choose. In the end so will everybody. If you don;t understand it go and study these books! You Americans are so gullible. AMERICA, YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE! Do you worship democracy alone, or do you worship the GOD of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? It is time to choose before it is too late.

Obama should ban the Mosque at Ground Zero and ban the burning of Bibles and Korans.

What this man is doing will provoke only mayhem, truly he is an idiot.
But what you are all doing is not appreciated either. When you say muslim, critisize muslims, blame muslims, are you referring to the whole 1.5 billion population of muslims in the world.? These “muslims” you refer to are a group of extremists called te al-qaeda. According to muslim law those people who cause unnecessary violence in the name of Islam are not muslims, but are a disgrace.

And let me give you a little insight on who these taliban are. They were people especially picked and trained by America to fight against the russians a few decades ago when Russia was a threat to America. The taliban are America’s Frankenstein. Now they are labelled as “muslims” as a cover up and we have the whole world turned against one religion. These are merely people who are using the cover of Islam to justify what is right but in no way does Islam encourage the acts the taliban and alqaeda commit.

Also there was a comment in which there was something included about “muslims” stoning women to death for being “accused” of getting raped/cheating. Just to clear things up NOWHERE in Islam does it say to kill a rape victim, NOWHERE. Its just the low mentality and the narrowmindedness of these small populations of people who claim to do it because its in the rule books. Its not. These are acts which no only occur in muslim populations but also in different religions all over the world and are completely wrong and in no way promoted by Islam or any other religion.

So please get your facts right and next time when you speak of “muslims” doing something wrong, it is merely the act of a few who try to incorrectly justify their actions using the name of ‘Islam’. Please think of the billions of innocent people who have to put up with taunts and embarresment everyday just for having their own faith.

Its beneath the Presidency to address this guy. I would request that the media ignore this insignificant figure…and to make a mutual agreement not to cover this. By elevating this minor figure, Terry Jones, to international stature will only encourage other minor figures to do outrageous acts to achieve their “15 minutes of fame”….for the sake of us here in theater…please ignore this guy.

I have no respect for ANY religion that devalues human life, especially over a book nonetheless. The fact that some people here are encouraging bodily harm towards someone for burning a book speaks volumes about how they *don’t* cherish life and respect it. The fact that Muslims are willing to kill over the burning of a book also speaks volumes about how they are a “religion of peace”. It appears that Islam is a violent, hate-filled atrocity that must be dealt with on the same level of violence.

The people that have claimed that Islam as peaceful and non violent have done NOTHING to disprove otherwise. I have read others’ posts in here and I have taken their advice and tried to listen, but all I hear is just name calling, ad-hominen attacks, and threats of violence towards another over nothing more than just a disagreement.

I too can act and behave on the same level of Muslims. If one of those violence prone, hate-filled, elitist Islamo weird beard wackos comes near me or my family and goes off on a sudden jihadi syndrome rage, I’ll snatch the life right out of ‘em.

Hate to burst you bubble, Roy. The estimates of how many radicals there are out of the 1.5 billion peace-loving, Kumbaya-singing, birds-are-chirping Muslims is low-balled at 10% of that number, so 25k is way, way low. The actual real percentage of radicals is a good 5-10% higher. The sooner we acknowledge that is a genuine us versus them, preservation of the Western Way of Life war and have the stones to eliminate totally those who seek to destroy us, the better the West will be.

Sometimes people fail to see the whole of a thing. Just because a few terrorists go on suicide bombing, doesn’t mean all of muslims are terrorists and violent. There are radicals in every relgion, every nation. Many muslims also died on 9/11 and we have to think of this terrorist attack as an attack on humanity by aggressive radicals, not as the wrong-doing of a specific religion…..gosh, how long will it need for people to understand? Now my question is you plan to carry out quran burning picnic based on 9/11, but long before that the “april fool” had been celebrated. What does that signify? Another picnic based on hatred? Hatred for what reason????

It is all about free speech. The “cancer” of the muslim world is their slow and carefule integration into any society ( See England) and the trouble they cause along the way. The “cancer” is fostering an intolerance to them and their events. They couch their outrage in lies and put it back on the “fair” americans that they are “honest” admirable people who don’t tolerate their own radical fringe when in essence, they never publically denounce the attacks on the west. Watch the cancer grow. Burning the books is a message to the Muslim world at least for a short period of time, we remember 9/11, we remember all 3000+ who have died and we will watch them as they spread their cancer around the world.

Hmm. Burning the Koran is wrong, but burning innocent airplane passengers as you drive it into a building on 9/11 isn’t? Where were these Moslem people crying for sensitivity when the Taliban blew up the 1,300 years old statues of Buddha in Bamiyan?

Do Moslems have any other emotion than hysterical anger? It doesn’t seem so. They don’t get mad when they do wrong, they only get mad when someone else steps on their curly toed shoes.

Besides, they can decide for themselves if they will respond to this desecretion with anger and murder; or with thoughtful contemplation as to why others are not fond of their religion as it is practiced. I don’t buy this crap that Moslems are unable to control their feelings and emotions. They can, but they won’t. Because they won’t doesn’t mean we have to step carefully around them. We can treat them as grownups, and punish them only when they break the law.

If they are so set against burning the Koran, and willing to kill, then they should be willing to sacrifice themselves to prevent this act. I suggest putting out an announcement that we will burn the Koran publically, but won’t do it if Osama Bin Laden turns himself in. If he won’t sacrifice himself to save a Koran, then he isn’t much of a Moslem.

Also, I don’t see any Moslems offering to have themselves sacrificed to prevent the burning. I wonder what the pastor would do if a Moslem showed up and offered himself to be burned in order to prevent this insult to God? Would he accept the burned sacrifice in God’s name?

Naw, the whole idea is silly. Moslems will kill for Islam, but won’t die themselves for it. Sacrifice is always on the part of other people, don’t you know.

Personally I find the Muslim world to be rather contradictory. They want the religious freedom protections of the 1st Amendment to build a mosque near ground zero, but they want us to deny the crazy pastor in Florida his 1st Amendment right to freedom of speech. They hold our troops to a high standard when engaging in battle yet it’s ok to kill Muslim children with Muslim suicide bombers. They seem to think the appropriate response to a cartoon or book burning is to kill all citizens of the nation where it occurred. When a woman is raped she is to be killed for dishonoring her family while there is no real consequence for the men who brutalized the woman.

I don’t agree with what the Florida nut job is doing, but it is within his rights and it frustrates me to see us being held ever more captive by the contradictions (which looks like hypocrisy) of the Muslim world.

When the war ended, the remaining 50,000 Carthaginians still breathing, a small part of the original pre-war population of aprox 380,000, were sold into slavery by the Roman victors The city was systematically burned for somewhere between 10 and 17 days; the city walls, its buildings and its harbour were utterly destroyed…the remaining Carthaginian territories were annexed by Rome..THATS how you fight a war!!

While I completely agree with these statements from another blogger I have to say that we don’t tend to see non-muslim radicals blowing up car bombs in markets or sending suicide bombers into police stations or calling for the death of another country’s citizens over a book burning. If Islam truly is a religion of peace then why the violence and bloodshed between Sunni and Shiite sects in almost every islamic nation? We don’t have any other religion of a similar age where adherents of different sects are at war with each other over varying interpretations of the religion. Even so, is it that Islam is violent or Arabs? We don’t see widespread violence in Turkey or Indonesia. So maybe it’s really more of an Arab culture thing than religion

I am just a freedom lover. And it is just about this.
Islam litteral translation is “submission” (to Allah). I don’t want to submit, to a state or to any God.If one wants to, so shall he do, as long as he doesn’t try to impose it to others.
I don’t want to harm anyone, unless they tried to harm me first. I am not American, but i do remember 9/11.I remember these horror images. I remember also, on a personal level, the hours of agony without news of a good friend of mine, working in south tower, hearing he could make it out without injuries just a couple a minutes before hearing someone I knew lostb his life in one of the planes.
I remember this was done by muslims terrorists, in name of their god. I remember having seen scenes of enthuastic and overhelming joy all over muslim countries.
I remember and didn’t forget, nor forgive.
Burning a koran (sorry, no capital letter for this) may be idiotic and inefficient. But it is freedom of speech. They are free to believe what they want, and others are free to hate what they believe.
Nobody has any obligation to respect any religion, it’s part of freedom. Freedom is also the right to express opinions some people dislike.
Denying to Terry Jones the right if he wants to to burn a book because of fear of retaliation equals to have a muslim led thought police. Thought police is former USSR, not free world…I am quite surprised a libertarian leader endorses this.
Radical muslims’ feelings are hurt? Fine. They hurted mine, 9 years ago, by killing innocent people, so I don’t care.
How many liberties have we lost, in name of “fighting terrorism”? shall we now accept to loose als freedom of speech and thinking ?

Watching a bunch of “peaceful” islamists on live TV marching down a street, burning our flag, screaming “death to America” suddenly receiving the full force of an AC-130 that just got orders to go weapons free.

The only reason that our troops are in danger is because the full force of our $700 billion DoD budget goes to waste for political correctness. We’d still be fighting Japan, if WWII was conducted the way the DoD is conducting the “war on terror”. That and Russia would still be enjoying all the sauerkraut they can stand.

What if this paster wanted to burn books on Wicca, or Satan worship – would you or Obama have a problem with it – not likely. The many different public opinions expressed here are interesting.
1. I would like to know how many people here critisizing the Quran have read it in its original arabic form and interpreted the correct translation. Please do not critisize any holy book as it is sacred to some people, just the like the bible, the towrah and every other book.
2. Like I said in my previous, these terrorists are minority who are using ‘Islam’ as a cover for what they are doing. According to muslim law those people who cause unnecessary violence in the name of Islam are not muslims, but are a disgrace.
3. Those who support the burning of these books are idiotic and not considering the fact stated above in point number 2. The Quran is the holy book of millions of innocent people who have nothing to do with these bombing etc that they are accused of. If you think this is taking a stand against “Terrorists”, its not. These terrorists don’t follow a word the Quran says properly instead twist the meanings of words to fit their own objective. The only people you will be taking a stand against will be the innocent people who believe in the peace and unity that the Quran supports, just like every other holy book.
4. Burning the Quran will do nothing, the terrorists will only do worse and this could eventually lead to something even worse.
5. These terrorists are not muslims, just using the name to justify themselves incorrectly. These terrorists are causing mayhem for all religions. Muslims in Pakistan are being killed everyday by suicide terrorist bombers, why would a muslim kill another. Because these people are NOT muslims, just using the label.

Muslims and every other religion, like Christianity, have to team up and fight against this terrorism andthat is exactly what the governments are trying to do.

People like this ‘idiot’ are just as bad as the terrorists.

There is no hadith that says that, sorry, your sources are incorrect. Maybe you should check from the right sources. Hadith is a proper interpretation of the Quran, and no where in Quran does it state such a thing. Stop B***sh**ing about things you don’t know SPQR.

Muslims worship the same God as Christians. Only difference in belief is Muslims consider Jesus to be a great prophet, whereas Christians call him the son of God. The idiocy of some of the people here amazes me.

you may never have heard of Muslims burning Bibles but that means you’ve had your head in the sand! here you go this is only one of many http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/285123/christians_in_gaza_fear_for_their_lives.html?cat=9 Have you heard of them going in and destroying whole villages of Christians….cause that happens too yet they are all up in arms if someone makes fun of Mohamed in a cartoon come on people!
The truth is Muslims feel they can attack Christians and Jews violently because the Koran tells them to “kill the people of the book.where ever you find them” don’t believe it go here…. http://www.wvinter.net/~haught/Koran.html
It’s time we wake up people we are talking about violent people willing to kill people for something someone a world away has done (or in this case might do) who is the real problem here? Freedom of religion, and expression ends when there is a sufficient Muslim population to take power….every time. Think it won’t happen in America? Check out what is happening in dearborn Michigan right now just google it I dare you just type Dearborn Islam and read if you dare or for the really stout of heart type “dearborn sharia”
Wake up people burning the Quran is a pointless action but at least hes trying to call attention to what is going on. If we don’t wake up soon we will all be hearing the Muslium call to pray over public loud speakers think that’s ridicules google “dearborn call to prayer” I DARE YOU!

Not a “bona fide church” for some undefined reason? Are only churches Mr. Barr approves of “bona fide”?

Politicians taking it upon themselves to decide what is or is not a “real” church scares me more than some words from a nitwit preacher.

Will, member of a “strange church” that “doesn’t believe in normal things”, according to Missouri Democraps.

SPQR:

Cannae scared the dickens out of the Romans. If Hanibal receives the support of the Carthaginian elite, in the form of siege engine purchasing power – think kind of ancient VISA card – Carthage conquers Rome, instead of their sudden death overtime win over Hanibal.
What was fun about that epic battle, which is still taught today as being brilliant and unprecedented, was the visual of Carthaginians cutting all of the gold Centurian rings. That was some of the booty that Hanibal presented to the elite, buckets full of rings, yet they still sat on their hands, like George Bush in 2002, when they had Osama cornered and conveniently let him slip away. Little Bush was already thinking about Iraq, distracted from the real mission.

Back to the Romans, I’ll bet you Ghengis Khan and his Mongols would have beat the tar out of the Romans, republic or empire. Ghengis knew how to conquer. His tumens would have “put the whupa$$ back in the can” on the legions.

What say you, plebian ?
