Quran-burning preacher defines “idiot”

A few years back, I hosted a weekly radio program, “Bob Barr’s Laws of the Universe.”  In recognition of the fact that the first Law of the Universe is, ”The World is Full of Idiots,” each week we would identify one or more members of that large class of persons as rising above the rest, as “Idiot of the Week.”  At the final show each year, we would announce the idiots par excellence as “Idiots of the Year” awardees.  Given the plethora of idiots from which to choose over the course of the year, identifying those truly outstanding idiots worthy of annual recognition was a difficult task; but one we somehow managed to accomplish.

Were I still hosting the show, I have no doubt that for the final show of 2010, one of the finalists for “Idiot of the Year” would be the Rev. Terry Jones of Gainesville, Florida.  Jones is the so-called preacher who is hosting and calling for a Quran-burning party this coming Saturday, September 11th.  Unlike pastors of bona fide churches, Jones’ “Dove World Outreach Center” spends its time and resources preaching hatred of Islam; something its webpage refers to as, ”getting up.”

While the primary focus of “DWOC” (an acronym the Center itself uses for short-hand references to itself) is Islam, it might just as well be Judaism, since the Center identifies the cardinal sin of Islam to be its belief that “any religion .  .  .  which teaches that Jesus is not the Son of God” is “of the devil.”

Apparently oblivious to much of reality, Rev. Jones appears to care not that staging a highly-publicized book-burning event concentrating on the Quran may — as Gen. David Petraeus has noted from his perspective as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan — place American troops in danger.  Jones certainly cares even less that Attorney General Eric Holder accurately describes the planned pyrotechnic pic nic as “idiotic.”  In this assessment, however, both Holder and Petraeus are describing the Gainesville preacher in overly generous terms.

The Great thing about this country is the right to protest and make a complete a$$ of yourself no matter what it might be about. So dont hate the player hate the game, oh wait if you did that then we wouldnt be able to talk all this smack.

If you think that buring the Quran is putting our soldiers in harms way then yall need to crawl out from under that rock you’ve been hiding under.

What we need to do is have mass burning’s of the Quran and throw these zeots into a frothing freenzie that will make them self combust.

Does that include Gen. Petraeus, who made this claim? Last I looked, he’s actually living in Afghanistan. At least he’s literate.

What he is doing is idiotic, but if it weren’t for the media no one would have known about it, and it wouldn’t have mattered. What it has done however, is point out that muslims will kill in retaliation for an insult, whereas most Americans wouldn’t have the conviction or the guts to do that. I mean, what the heck, let’s ground break for a mosque on 9-11. Why aren’t muslims afraid that we will retaliate? BEcause as a nation we have become gutless.

First, I am a practicing Evangelical Christian, Secondly I am not American. However, the great aunt of my grandson was injured on 9/11. My problem with Terry Jones is quite simple: By burning, and thus desecrating the Qu’ran, he is, in my view, also desecrating the Bible. Jesus told us to turn the other cheek. Islam holds the Gospel to be the inspired word of God, as it does the Pentateuch. In fact the Qu’ran specifically forbids the desecration of these books, and considers those who do so to be heretics. Thus the Taliban, and their ilk, are considered by true Muslims to be outcasts of the faith. Taking this one step farther: It is not the terrorists Terry Jones is insulting with his actions, but rather the true Muslims who stand against these terrorists. Lastly by his actions he is disobeying Christ’s own preaching, disobeying the instructions given by God (He believes the Bible to be the literal word of God), and thus desecrating our Holy Book, The Dible.

I hope after he gets through burning them that N.O.W. will show up and burn some burkas …………. but don’t hold your breath. The old “double standard” you know.

By the way, you know what Jesus said about any “religion” that didn’t follow Him don’t you?

John 8:

“42Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. 43Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! ”

If you don’t like the above ……….. take it up with Him. I’m just the messenger.

Scout – You are, in fact, illustrating my point. The so – called Islamic Republics have little to do with, Islam, but everything to do with a polluted version of the religion. One of the problems for Muslims is the very nature of the Qu’ran (The Book of Recitations) as it is written in Classical Arabic. Unfortunately many, if not most, of the religious leaders in these countries have learned the words by rote, but have little understanding of the meaning, thus they pollute the teachings of Muhammad. In the same way, poor translations of the Bible make its meaning unclear: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1, v 1). Countless people misunderstand this because of the mistranslation of the Greek word ‘Logos’. Logos means: “the all powerful commanding word, or force, behind the Universe”. Now rephrase the verse using this translation. It now has much greater, clearer meaning.

My point is quite simple: If you confuse flag burning with holy book burning, then you are a worshiper of idols. Is that clear enough for you? Flags just represent nations, but holy books represent the Word of God to those who believe, whether the book is the Torah, the New Testament or the Quran. We pledge allegiance to a flag “and the nation for which it stands,” but we worship the God whose Word that we believe is written in a holy book. Burning a holy book is attempting to destroy the Life in it.

This man in Florida is not the first to burn the Quaran; the Spanish Inquisition is a sad time in the history of Christianity, when Qurans were burned by “christians.”

“In his 1821 play, Almansor, the German writer Heinrich Heine — referring to the burning of the Muslim holy book, the Qur’an, during the Spanish Inquisition — wrote,

‘Where they burn books, so too will they in the end burn human beings.’

(’Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen.’)

“One century later, Heine’s books were among the thousands of volumes that were torched by the Nazis in Berlin’s Opernplatz.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_burning

“Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (December 13, 1797 – February 17, 1856) was a journalist, an essayist, and one of the most significant German romantic poets. Jewish by birth, he converted to Christianity as an adult.”

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Heinrich_Heine

Is that not interesting that a German Jew, who converted to Christianity, recognized the sin of burning the Quran by Christian during the Spanish Inquisition (which was a persecution of Jews and Muslims)? How ironic, also, that his books were burned by Hitler, who eventually burned human beings too — the Jews — after gas chambers!!!

“Where they burn books, so too will they in the end burn human beings.”

Christian Johann Heinrich Heine, unlike you — DAWGFAN 86 and your allies — saw the evil in book burning. Good men and women must stop persons who burn books before the evil persons become “mad” — and bold enough — to burn human beings!

Unfortunately, in the United States, hatred towards minorities is nothing new.

Sarah Palin’s controversy against the Islamic Community Centre, has stirred up hatred against Islam, because uneducated people know little about other religions. Bigots like Palin count on this ignorance and use fear to stir up the likes of folks like the pastor who is bent on burning the Qur’an. Unbalanced folks like Palin and the pastor are oblivious to the damage they cause not only to the good, hard working people of the Islamic faith, but against all allied troops in Afghanastan. These people should be held accountable for the hatred they spread and for the lives that they are endangering.

Quoting from the Bible is somewhat pointless. There are so many translations out there, each one reflecting the viewpoint of the translators, that quotations often become points of dissension between believers. If you really want to understand what the Bible says, then study Ancient Hebrew and Classical Greek, Do thid together with a study of the culture of the period in which it was written. Then you may come to a closer understanding of its meaning.

I’m also not a christian so stop the whinning about “WWJD”. It’s obvious his way failed..he got nailed to a stick by turning the other cheek.. I intend to be the one holding the hammer in life, not the one nailed to the stick.

The reason I support burning the koran is the double standard. Muslims want free reign to trash womens rights, flags, anything non islamic..yet they demand respect for their little comic book ..stereo instructions for how to live in the 6th f’king century…

I refuse to give them that respect.

Ken, Wouldn’t blame you for defending yourself, but to deliberately exacerbate an already bed situation is plain stupidity. The point is that sabre rattling doesn’t help. What has happened with all three of the Abramic faiths is that they have become politicized. With Islam, in particular, the male – dominated culture of the individual countries has imposed itself over the pure Islamic beliefs which has led to a pollution of the faith. This certainly doesn’t make their behaviour right, but neither does it mean that we should punish all muslims for their faith. Immediately we start burning books we start stifling free speech.

The fastest growing religion today is Islam and the reason is quite obvious. Have you heard of any Islamic leaders burning the Bible or the Torah. We are the idiots when we say it is ok to burn the Qur’an, for how would we like it if other faiths burnt our Bible.

I get annoyed when I read crap like “I support burning the koran is the double standard. Muslims want free reign to trash womens rights, flags, anything non islamic..yet they demand respect for their little comic book ..stereo instructions for how to live in the 6th f’king century…”

It was obvious to me that the person who made the above comment has never read a page, let alone, a sentence in the Qur’an. Christians have to start being less arrogant, more intelligent and tolerant of other religions. Then maybe one day, Christianity will be the fastest growing religion!
