Atlanta Tea Party was well-organized and well-behaved

It may come as a shock to people around the country whose familiarity with the Tea Party movement is gleaned from national media reports, but yesterday’s rally at the State Capitol in Atlanta, Georgia was well-organized, substantive, and well-behaved.

I had the pleasure of attending and speaking at this event, and I was impressed with the demeanor and attentiveness of the crowd — which included many young people in addition to adults from a very diverse background.  The speakers reflected that diversity of backgrounds as well, and included many from Georgia (of course), but also from Washington, DC, other states and even other countries.

Common to those standing and listening to the speakers, and to the speakers themselves, was not so much the “anger” often portrayed by the national media as the hallmark of the Tea Party movement, but more of a deep and sincere concern for the current and future state of the nation.  Government spending is today reaching historically — and dangerously — high levels of deficit; and the federal government’s role in the lives of the citizenry is expanding at an alarming rate.  Focusing on these phenomena is vitally important, and the grassroots-based Tea Party movement is an entirely appropriate mechanism for doing so – not as the arm of any political party, but independent of those structures.

Whether the movement will sustain the energy and focus clearly evident at the Atlanta rally yesterday (and apparently also reflected in others around the country) over the long haul — so as to have any real hope of accomplishing its goal of actually reducing government power, spending and taxation — remains to be seen.  But for the time being, the Tea Party movement is doing exactly what it should be doing — providing a forum for citizens sincerely concerned about the future of this great nation, in which they can share ideas and experiences in a civil and productive manner.

Where were the Tea Baggers when

(1) America invaded Iraq under false pretense?

(2) W. Bush help turn a surplus into a deficit?

(3) GM closed plants in Michigan and began outsourcing jobs to Mexico?

(4) Dutch Reagan and Ollie North sold weapons to the Iranians and ran drugs for the Contras?

(5) W.Bush increased gross debt from $5.6 trillion in January 2001 to $10.7 trillion by December 2008?

(6) Israel was receving $106 billion in assistance from the USA during the last 60 years?

Voice of Reason, “post mortem” was my term, not AB’s. With all due respect to your admiration for Reagan, we have enjoyed superior firepower, but not peace since the early 90’s – and I hate to do this, but AB points out it is our obsession with “superior firepower” which has led us to the false sense that we are “exceptional”. Namely that we can use our best-trained, best-equipped military to “project power” where we desire (Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia). Note: these imperial boondoggles were championed by Dems as well as Reps, and nose, save maybe the first and second years in Afghanistan, concerned American national security (the true role of the DoD). And as always, these crusades were financed by debt/deficits. That’s all I am going to say about AB and American exceptionalism. I suspect you, like many simply assumed we were an “exceptional leader” because Reagan told you we were. Maybe from 1945-1960, but a perfect political storm that pre-dates WWII ended that phase in American history my friend.

For all the idiots on here who think the tea party is racist.

Black conservative tea party backers take heat

They’ve been called Oreos, traitors and Uncle Toms, and are used to having to defend their values. Now black conservatives are really taking heat for their involvement in the mostly white tea party movement—and for having the audacity to oppose the policies of the nation’s first black president.

“I’ve been told I hate myself. I’ve been called an Uncle Tom. I’ve been told I’m a spook at the door,” said Timothy F. Johnson, chairman of the Frederick Douglass Foundation, a group of black conservatives who support free market principles and limited government.

“Black Republicans find themselves always having to prove who they are. Because the assumption is the Republican Party is for whites and the Democratic Party is for blacks,” he said.

One of Obamao’s biggest supporter and owner of NBC and PMSNBC didn’t pay any taxes. Liberals remain silent.

GE: 7,000 tax returns, $0 U.S. tax bill

General Electric filed more than 7,000 income tax returns in hundreds of global jurisdictions last year, but when push came to shove, the company owed the U.S. government a whopping bill of $0.

Cheryl M

I agree with the American right to dissent. I understand the ideal of not wanting to pay “high taxes: and I like anybody else does not want to do it. But what I don’t understand is the double speak going on within the TEA Party. First let’s start with the name. I have seen signs and people to numerous to count that TEA is an acronym for Taxed Enough Already. Which would be legitimate except for the reality……..”William Gale: “[T]axes are literally at their lowest in decades.” CBS News reported on April 15 that “taxes are at their lowest levels in 60 years, according to William Gale, co-director of the Tax Policy Center and director of the Retirement Security Project at the Brookings Institution.” CBS News further reported:

“The relation between what is said in the tax debate and what is true about tax policy is often quite tenuous,” Gale told Hotsheet. “The rise of the Tea Party at at time when taxes are literally at their lowest in decades is really hard to understand.”

So what is the REAL argument? What is the meaning behind “Big Government”? I’m not negating anyone’s right to be against anything, I just want to know what they mean when they say:

1) Lower Taxes – President Obama has done that, lowest in 60 years and you are all complaining that not enough of us pay taxes now…..what is that – taxes too low? Isn’t that an anathema of the Conservative principles you “stand” on?

2) Reduce the size of Government – Which things go? Biggest expenditures first, Medicare, SS, Military…..and so on, how do we determine what is most important to all Americans. Your ideas may not be the same as mine……

3) No Hand-outs – which entitlements/subsidies are worthy of keeping according to you? Farm, Corporate, Walmart, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Dept. of Agriculture (food assistance)

4) Stop Spending – on what? Which things are worthy according to you, and what makes you more worthy to decide. Who are the 47% who pay, how do you know which ones we are and which ones we are not? I pay, and I like most of the proposals of the current President, does my voice count less than your’s.

5) Take back OUR country – From Whom? If I vote, and you vote, and I like what’s being done to correct the wrong direction we were headed in, and I am willing to be patient and pay for things to be corrected – then who are you taking it back from? Seems to me that millions upon millions of Americans voted for the present course, we didn’t TAKE anything, we won it. So you want to take what you couldn’t win? Is that the America you wish to have back? When did that America Exist and when exactly did it leave?

These are the questions I have regarding the Tea Party movement. If they could be answered, I’d be much obliged, not because I will agree but because I truly want to understand if it’s more than bigoted xenophobia we are witnessing rearing its head again in history. It certainly does not appear to be that original in its context.

Just remember, in 2004 Michael Moore made a documentary attacking President Bush and his policies. His documentary went to gross over $100 million domestically at the box office, which was unprecedented for a documentary. Moore, Al Franken, Maureen Dowd, etc. made millions selling books revealing the “true” nature of George W. Bush and his Republican White House. It seemed like most everybody out there couldn’t stand Bush… but he got re-elected honestly, by the people.

The party out of power always makes the most noise, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything come election time. The Tea Party is no different than Michael Moore and Bruce Springsteen’s rallies in 2004, they drew thousands of people all over the nation as well… Kerry lost, Bush won.

If you don’t know that “Liberals” are upset about this, then perhaps you don’t watch MSNBC enough. It gets talked about alot. Everything just is getting overshadowed by this Tea Party Frenzy, and the real important things are not getting as much coverage.
