Air America’s competition will be missed

The New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts will duke it out in Miami on February 7th for the NFL championship.  Each of these two teams had to battle its way to the pinnacle of the sports world to reach the Super Bowl.  Regardless of whether one roots for the Saints or the Colts, or for neither team, we should all cheer the spirit and practice of competition embodied in the process by which each of these teams secured its place in the championship game.  As legendary Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne noted many decades ago – in sports as well as in business, competition is good.  Competition builds not just character, but unlocks the very possibility for success in virtually any endeavor; including broadcasting.

While many conservatives are cheering the demise last week of the liberal-oriented Air America network, their glee is short-sighted and misplaced.  Many of those conservative broadcast pundits who mouth words extolling competition generally, seem to overlook its value when it comes to their profession.  Having liberal-oriented competition for the highly popular string of conservative radio talk shows crowding the contemporary airwaves, should be encouraged, not discouraged by conservatives.  If in fact conservatives’ ideas as espoused on air by the likes of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh are sound, then should not they and their advocates relish the thought of fellow broadcasters challenging them on competing programs with a more liberal orientation?

One might legitimately criticize Air America for its management and programming decisions in the years since it went on the air with much fanfare in 2004; I leave that to business and industry experts.  But having a network which presents ideas in counterpoint to the conservative perspective so widely prevalent today, would benefit all Americans concerned about formulating and implementing sound public policy; policies that are forged, strengtheneed and improved in the arena of competition, rather than in the echo chamber that talk radio in America has become.

Love Boortz….even when I do not agree with him. i will look up what he says to try to prove him wrong sometimes..so far no luck. His show is interesting and fast paced. He really does not do any hate talk. Listen and learn.

Dan, with that theory Fox News would be long gone….in my opinion, what doomed Air America is the fact that not enough Democrats are willing to spend their days/nights being told what to think, lapping up cherry picked quotes dozens of times a day, having an agenda spoon fed to them, and basically being lied to over and over again…

The debacle in Mass. last week was their final straw. They began to realize that no one really wants to listen to the left-leaning politicans or talking heads. This is a center-right country. I have no problems with the center-left either. Clowns like Frankin and Keith Olberman are worthless to listen to. Pat Robertson is worthless on the right too!

Air America’s competition will be missed

Yes, it will be missed by Hugo Chavez, Al Quida, Castro, Kim Jong IL and Michael Moore.

Other than that, not so much.

It is amazing that AIr America lasted as long as it did. Look as much as a “balanced forum” may be a good thing, there was not a market for what they were peddling. Most folks did not find it entertaining or agree with the positions of Al Franken and his cohorts. Capitalism has a unique way of pushing the cream to the top and Air America was not it.

I think there are a bunch of sick people writing in this blog who out to grow up and quit name calling. What I have a fundamental problem with is that people spend so much time name calling and shouting out their own ideas, they don’t even listen to anyone else. If you really want to understand why the country is going down, look in the mirror people. We are destroying our own country because we seem to have lost the ability to listen and consider ideas that contradict what we think.
I prefer being given the facts (not that any of these people do) and let me make up my own mind. I’m not so stupid that I can’t sort it out on my own.

Throw out the fairness doctrine, buy up all the radio stations in the country, put Rush, Boortz, Savage, North, Hannity and Beck on them all, incestuously interview all the right wing think tankers and G-NO-P pols, and then lecture us about “the free market” causing Air America’s demise??? That’s a hot one!

All you trolls and right-wing react-tank employees sure are spending a lot of time dissing AA, especially since you consider it so unimportant and such a marginal voice. Now that it’s gone, your employers won’t need you to chat about it. Its demise means you are expendable.

Which ties in nicely to the idea of having competition for neo-con radio. Without the opposition, you trolls will have nothing to do. We don’t mourn your demise, either.

I listen to these guys, and I’ve never heard them even ONCE advocate censoring Air America off the airwaves. Air America failed in a FAIR competition; something they and their ilk are loathe to abide. If a new liberal competitor surfaces I’m sure Hannity and Rush would welcome the competition. REGULATING competitive outcomes (airtime) is NOT fair competition, it’s the misguided liberal approach otherwise known as tyranny.

Extreme liberal media will always struggle because it caters to an audience that appears to either have no money to support it (or advertisers) – or, they expect to get the programming for free.

Good point. Exept if you happen to be NPR, and receive part of your operating budget from federal taxes.

As a conservative libertarian, I’ve listened to Air America a bunch of times…call it the entertainment factor; as those guys were sleazy simpletons that just don’t understand logical principals. That said, it’s a shame they’re going, because NOW, the Left will furiously step-up their attempts to suppress the free speech currently on the radio (as Leftisits tend to do—their ideas don’t survive well when examined and challenged; for example, that’s why Chavez shuts down media in his country). Bet on some forthcoming scheme to silence talk radio now that AA is out of the picture.

Air America provided a diverse relief from the shallow perspectives attempted by the CLOWNS on TALK RADIO masquerading as CONSERVATIVES.

This coming from a card carrying looney lefty. I’d venture to say you’ve NEVER listened to Rush or Glen for more than, say, 5 mintues. Yet you’ve come to such objective conclusions so quickly!

“But I guess that is a direction to omit that we are a Christain nation and founded by such.”

For the billionth, trillionth time, America is not, nor has it ever been, a “Christian nation.”

The United States Constitution is a completely SECULAR document. There is NO MENTION in it of god, Zeus, jesus, Isis, or any supernatural deity.

Look up “treaty of tripoli” and learn a bit more.

Just because the majority of citizens of the U.S. claim* to be xtian does not make this a xtian country. The Founding Fathers were mostly Deists.

Why are these FACTS so difficult for right-wingers to understand? Seriously.

*Yes, CLAIM. Most of the people who claim to be xtian in this country have no idea what that even means. And how could they? With so many denominations and sects and translations, it’s darn confusing to know that the “truth” is. In fact, I believe intelligent “believers” are actually agnostic, and just claim xtianity because they want to fit in. It’s EASY to be a Xtian in America. Churches everywhere, so many freedoms you can’t count them all, societal acceptance and perpetual commendation out the wazoo, governmental holidays off, to name a few. It’s like a warm, happy club where everyone either feels love for all their fellow humans, or wants to bomb those who do not agree with them (depends on the denomination).

@High School Dropout

Again, the thing to remember is that Liberal media is a success. If AA were the only game in town they probably wouldn’t have gone under.

But with competition from Thom Hartmann, Ed Schultz, Randi Rhodes, Alan Colmes, Stephanie Miller and Bill Press AA just couldn’t compete.

Just proof that liberal / progressive ideals can’t live in the private sector where you have to create positive cash flow. While some may like the refreshing opposition of opinions to those of Rush and Hannity, there just are not enough people who care or support the ideals that Air America was putting forth to actually fund the message. Without special government grants or anti-free speech laws like the proposed ‘fairness doctrine’ by liberal politicians these ideals will always fail over time.

And if it were not for the likes of George Soros and others the liberal TV media that someone claimed was so succesful would also fail. Just take a look at the stock value of Fox vs any (CNN / MSNBC / ABC). American economics people….
