Those responsible for the mass industrial prison complex the U.S. has become are the county prosecutors / DA's, the Legislators and Congress (some who were driving the laws but are hypocrites and offenders themselves) -- who have written draconian laws, that lack common sense, to gain the "vote" and for their personal agendas -- at the expense of innocent people and their families. These politicians have politicized justice which now lacks integrity and balance. This has negatively impacted society and is looming larger than the failed policies of the decades old "Drug Wars".

The poorly written laws have resulted in destruction of lives where people of all ages, nonviolent, first offenses which are being broad-brushed into the same box with the sickest, most depraved rapist / killers who are not detered by the laws but continue to do what they do.

We now have a decaying society with a new sub-class society complete with a registry which is trapping the wrong people. We can thank the self-righteous,Fox Bill O'Reilly and his 24/7 soap box to create fear among the people, which he has helped create a decaying, fearful society, with moral panics and ongoing witch-hunts with his 24/7 one-sided rantings.

The sad comments in the blog are the tip of the iceberg. Now all are at risk, while the politicians "move-on" in their pursuit to take away the individual's rights using "high-profile" labels of the day and fear-mongers. It's time these abusers are exposed for the monster they have created that has made the U.S. #1 jailer in the world - 1 in 31 in Corrections (Pew Report on the States).

Wake up America! The people are under siege -- as the self-righteous prosecutors, media witch-hunters, O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck's collect millions of dollars annually while destroying the people and our society's future.

Good for Mr. Barr. Not everyone should fall in the same category. Oklahoma has the same laws. My ex will be getting out of prison after 32 months. He was charged with having copied two pictures from the computer and maybe having chatted with an undercover police officer. All on the computer and in his home. He didn't take a picture, sell or buy child porn. Because he was sent to prison, he has lost everything he has. He will be out in a month and has no place to go. He is not a sex offender but will have to register as one. He could not get out early because he had no address. I don't believe he can get in a nursing home..he is 70 yrs old and in bad health. He is offered no options by anyone..not even the parole board he has to report to. So what are these people to do. Their crime should be looked at individually and not thrown in the same box. When I was in Okla. this summer, on the news a man had raped a 4 yr. old and served one year....go figure. Anyone who can help with any ideas for him...

Thank you Mr.Barr for getting people to discuss this topic!
There are many people who blindly believe the lies and eat it up like a hog in slop!
We must join together to vote these idiots out of office!
I am uplifted by the truth being told here.

Did you know that you can be accused, charged, and convicted of child molestation without any evidence? All you have to have is accusations and many times it is from ex-spouses or older children angry at a parent/step-parent. Sometimes ex-spouses and detectives who don't know how to interview children will manipulate and influence young children into falsely accusing. There are many innocent men and women who either were found guilty through a tragic trial where the jury immediately found them guilty or from a negotiated a plea because of coercion from the DA's office.

Bob Barr is correct in his editorial! These laws need to change in restricting after serving time, but we need to look at the laws that are convicting these people without any evidence as well. People lie and memories aren't always what actually happened. We must have hard evidence and not just an accusation before any charges can be made. Yes, protect the children but don't destroy lives and families because of a false accusation. I've seen families ripped apart by DFCS, detectives, & the DA's office who are clueless and just out to meet their quota. They don't care about the truth, but out to win their case and get the "bad guy."

Wake up Georgia! Your rights are slowly evaporating. Who is next?

Also, we need to find alternatives to prison. Treatment is not being done in prison for any offense. There is no rehabilitation or correction going on in Georgia prisons. If the inmates rehabilitate it is by their own doing and now of the system. The Dept of Corrections has "counselors" teaching the sex offender classes who do not know anything about sex offenders or human behavior at all. I heard about one teacher who wears tight short skirts and sits on the desk with her legs spread showing her crotch to see how the guys react. She will write down their reactions in their parole paperwork. Also, I've been told that if a falsely accused convicted sex offender says that he is innocent in the class then he can't parole out and will have to wait until his max out date. This isn't treatment, but just the parole board trying to see which ones need to stay in longer. Statistics show that treatment does work and helps decrease recidivism. Statistics also show that sex offenders have a much lower percentage of recidivism than other offenses. Our community would be safer if we spent the money on treatment rather than the registry.

Good going, Bob Barr. Please don't stop speaking out for us.

I think it is worth mentioning that I just read where the man who killed and raped 6 year old Christopher Barrios in Brunswick, GA has been given the death penalty. The jury took less than three hours to decide his fate. This story is sure to stir up the same old "see there- all sex offenders are child rapers and killers-kill them all!" type of media attention, and I'm sure the Georgia State Legislature will use it as an example to vindicate their "harsh stance on sex offenders" law making.

The detail they will leave out, however, is that it is THEIR FAULT that this man even came into contact with the boy. Edenfield wasn't harming anyone at all where he lived, but because his home was too close to either a school, daycare or church he had to move to be in compliance with the states restrictions on where sex offenders could live.

Funny how he had lived that close to a school, day care or church all that time and hadn't harmed anyone, isn't it?

And it wasn't that he had recently been convicted of a sex crime or recently released from prison that was why he had to move, it was because the Georgia legislature made their law RETROACTIVE back to anyone who had committed a sex crime since 1996. It is this part of the law, among others, that is being hammered at.

And what did the Georgia legislature have to say for itself when this crime first happened a while back and was asked to account for the fact that not only was Mr. Edenfield forced to move after he had done nothing wrong but that he was LIVING WITH HIS FATHER, WHO IS ALSO A REGISTERED SEX OFFENDER? (Against the law, as two convicted felons can't live together.)

You ready for this? It was an "unintended consequence". Much like when you cook your roast too long in the crock pot you get the "unintended consequence" of burnt meat.

I seriously hope that someone in the media will point out that not only was this child's life needlessly cut short due to a law passed with the purported intentions of protecting children, but that the Georgia State Legislature, and in particular Jerry Keen who authored it, share a degree of responsibility for his death.

There's blood on the hands of the Georgia State legislature.

Mrs. DoRight, I have one question for you. Why are you an "ex" social worker? And as such what are your credentials for making an across the board diagnosis apparently lumping all people convicted of sex crimes (the broad category called "sex offenders", which is what this discussion is centered on), as child abusers? If you are referring to the 5% of sex offenders classified by the Georgia Sexual Offender Review Board as presenting any real threat to the public then you may have a valid point, that they should be kept locked up in the interest of public safety. Castration..... well, that sounds like there might be something personal at play here, maybe some pay back for something that happened to you maybe? As a supposedly educated person, and to be a social worker I am assuming you mean with a degree in social work, I would think you could offer a more civilized option here. Or is that why you're an "ex" social worker?

I don't mean anything personal here Debbie, I'm just a bit teed that some people keep missing the point here. NO ONE is even remotely suggesting to be light on the punishment for people who abuse children or anyone unable to make their own decisions in regard to sexual activity. I haven't read any comment from anyone that even suggest such a thing. BUT, what people such as yourself seem to keep missing is that there are many other people on the sex offender registry, 95% of them in fact according to the Georgia Sexual Offender Review Board, who represent little to no threat to anyone. And the issue we are discussing here is should they, the other 95%, have to abide by the same set of rules and regulations as the 5% who are a significant threat? In what world would that make any sense? And wouldn't the public be better protected if law enforcement could concentrate on monitoring the 5% that are dangerous rather than having to keep an eye on all of them equally?

Do I have to get out my big red crayon and write it out for you?

If you have a hard time grasping this very simple fact then maybe it is a good thing that you are an "ex" social worker. Gesh!
