Watch lists, guns and government

The secret government “Terrorist Watch List,” reportedly already swelled to more than 1.1 million names, will have an addendum, if gun control advocates in Congress have their way. This new addendum — also to be cloaked in secrecy — would empower the U.S. Attorney General to deny a person the ability to exercise their Second Amendment rights to purchase a firearm.

While it is not surprising that some members of Congress are again using fear of terrorism to implement a gun-control agenda, the openly unconstitutional legislative language proponents are employing is troubling.

Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) is leading the effort in the Senate, while another well-known gun control advocate — Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) — is directing the House initiative. They have introduced identical bills — the “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act of 2009.” This proposal would give the attorney general the power to unilaterally and in secret develop a watch list of persons believed to be unworthy of possessing a firearm or any explosive.

This new “dangerous terrorist” watch list would include names based not on hard evidence of criminal activity, but on nothing more than the subjective conclusion by the attorney general that a person is “appropriately suspected” (whatever that means) of engaging in some manner of assisting or preparing for acts of domestic or international terrorism. The American people would never be privy to what criteria might be employed by the attorney general to determine whether someone is an “appropriate suspect,” and they would have no way of knowing why they might be denied the ability to purchase a firearm.

If a person were to be refused “permission” to purchase a firearm or explosive, and if they subsequently filed a lawsuit in federal court to find out why, the government still could keep such information secret. In other words, the attorney general could deny a U.S. citizen the ability to own a firearm, and never have to give the reason.

For legislators like Lautenberg and King, who apparently have absolute faith in unelected government officials to make the right decisions for the right reasons at the right times (and never be required to explain those decisions), one has only to consider the checkered history of post-9/11 “terrorist” watch lists to see the folly of such perspective. Stories abound of persons denied the ability to board a commercial aircraft, or greatly delayed in being allowed on board, for no reason other than their name erroneously appeared on some “watch list.” Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), have been among this not-so-elite group.

A report earlier this year by the FBI’s inspector general chronicled extensive internal problems with the terrorist watch list maintained by that agency. The IG found numerous examples of inaccuracies, incomplete entries, out-of-date information and inclusion of information “unrelated to terrorism.” While the inconvenience of not being able to board an airliner for a business trip or a vacation can be a real headache, being refused the ability to purchase a firearm to protect one’s life clearly raises the stakes.

The government already has remedies already at its disposal to keep firearms out of the hands of known or suspected terrorists. Under existing federal law, there are numerous categories of persons prohibited from purchasing or possessing firearms; including persons in violation of immigration laws, convicted felons, illicit drug users and others. And if a person truly is a known or suspected terrorist, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — as the federal law enforcement agency primarily responsible for enforcing the nation’s gun laws — certainly should be made aware of that information. We don’t need a secret, anti-Second Amendment watch list to implement effective law enforcement in America.

I do agree that there is(and has been) a movement within the Democratic party to “dis-arm” the American Citizenry. Why bother with all the time and expense involved in bringing to justice those who commit crimes, including murder, using firearms? Lets just take away all their guns! Better yet, lets take away all the ammunition – the gun becomes useless. Someone a lot smarter than me said, and this is paraphrasing:
THOSE WHO OWN GUNS ARE CALLED SUBJECTS

THOSE WHO DO NOT OWN GUNS ARE CALLED SLAVES

[...] Don’t forget – he will also be watching a list of “terror suspects” in case they want to buy a gun.  He will decide who still has rights under the 2nd amendment.  Isn’t that [...]

This falls squarely in-line with the growing Orwellian police-state & (intentional) destruction of our Constitutional Republic. Using “terrorism” (exaggerated at best, false-flag at worst) as a pretext, the (Globalist Elite) controlled Feds continue the assault on our rights & liberties. By design, the majority of sheeple are duped by the fallacious Left vs. Right, DNC vs. GOP paradigm. Meanwhile, the downward spiral to a dystopia continues!

terry at 3;15…sounds like you are the one thats scared, raed the article more closely and note that this is a bipartisan proposal, therefore ‘anti democratic propaganda’ does not really apply here. the issue here is that we already have background checks in place, and they have been proven effective, the problem with this proposal is that it gives new and unaccountable goverment power over american citizens, which is exactly the same problem most people have with the patriot act, also the NRA;s power comes from the american citizens who are members of it , which is a lot better than and more representative than most other lobbyist groups. fear not.

First off, MANY DECENT AND INNOCENT PEOPLE ARE ON THE WATCH LIST!
They consider you a threat if you do simple things, like GET TO THE AIRPORT EARLY (as they TELL YOU TO DO), and then walk around to prevent your legs from getting blood clots! Or buying a soft drink AT THE AIRPORT, finishing it, going to the drinking fountain and filling it with AIRPORT SUPPLIED WATER! THIS, AND DOZENS OF OTHER “rules” ARE STUPID!!
Second, ANTI-GUNNERS are ALWAYS BLAMING THE NRA for everything! They are NOT THAT POWERFUL! They NEVER HAVE BEEN THAT POWERFUL. They just SEEM THAT WAY BECAUSE ALL OF THE ANTI-gun Groups ARE CONSTANTLY CAUGHT LIEING ON MAJOR ISSUES!!! If anti-gun people would QUIT, and BECOME ANTI-CRIME GROUPS, with the agenda OF STOPPING AND ARRESTING CRIMINALS! REPORTING CRIMES, HONESTLY AND ACCURATELY, THEY WOULD GET RESULTS AND NOT WASTE TIME AND MONEY WHINING ABOUT GUNS!!!
Third: Senator Edward a.k.a “Ted” (his ALIAS) Kennedy SHOULD BE ON THE WATCH LIST! HE AND HIS TWO FRIENDS KILLED THAT LADY WHEN SHE DID NOT DIE IN THE FAKE AUTO ACCIDENT!!! Also, Kennedy helped DAN RATHER and HOLLYWOOD SUBVERSIVES TO COMMIT 4 ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS AGAINST PRES. FORD, and at least 2 ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS against and at least 1 other CRIME OF TREASON/ trying to harm, PRES. REAGAN!!! KENNEDY SHOULD HAVE BEEN SHOT BY A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FIRING SQUAD, DECADES AGO, IF THE FEDS EVER DID THIER JOBS!
FOURTH: EVERYONE IS CRYING THAT AMERICAN GUNS ARE CROSSING THE BORDER TO MEXICO!! THIS IS THE FAULT OF CONGRESS! FOR OVER 36 YEARS, AMERICANS HAVE COMPLAINED TO CONGRESS ThAT THEY WANT THE BORDERS SEALED AND CONTROLLED! AND 4 TIMES CONGRESS HAS PULLED FRAUDS AND PROMISED TO DO THIS, AND NEVER EVEN MAKING AN ATTEMPT TO ACCOMPLISH THIS SIMPLE TASK!!! MY POINT: DO NOT BLAME GUNS OR LAWS, BLAME THE PEOPLE IN POSITIONS OF POWER WHO HAVE COMMITTED THE WORST CRIMES IN HISTORY- OUR CONGRESSMEN!!! THEY SOLELY ARE RESPONSIBLER FOR CRIME! THEY WILL NOT CONTROL THE BORDERs! THEY ALLOW THE FBI AND THE CIA TO OPENLY BE CORRUPT!! They allow and ENCOURAGE ALL CRIMINALS WHILE DOING ALL THEY CAN TO HARM GOOD HONEST CITIZENS!!!

If a politician is afraid of the voter being armed even to the extent the police forces are armed then that politician is a liar because he or she has not defended the U.S, Constitution and needs to be thrown out of the office which they were elected to by the PEOPLE. Anyone who doesn’t trust honest law abiding Americans being armed at all times does not deserve the elected office he or she holds. They are not defending our U.S. Constitution.

Really, Bob? And what about Bush and the Republicans using the fear of terrorism to go on a spending spree and engage the US in a reckless and unnecessary war? What about denying people boarding rights on US aircraft just because your name is “similar” to someone on the watch list? And now you pop up your head over someone’s supposed “right” to buy a gun? What hypocrisy, but typical of a Republican toadie like Bob ‘Impeachment’ Barr.

Every action has a reaction. This is why as result of such government intrusion and infringement on our rights, the reaction is that there is now a growing “underground” of gun owners, stockpiling, trading and selling guns and ammo to those they know and trust. Do we care if these guns are registered, if the buyers are on a so called “terrorist” watch list, or if the guns are even considered “legal” in a particular State? I think we all know the answer to that. The more oppressive this Socialist government becomes, the more forceful and wide spread the reaction. The best recruiting agency for turning once average citizens into radicals and “outlaws” has become the Federal Government. With each new infringement of our rights, our numbers grow. Keep it up Obummer.

We are becoming more and more like communist Russia and Hitler’s Gremany each day. We are willing to tell the terrorist about our methods of obtaining information but our government would deny a person the right to purchase a gun and not tell the person why. I agree, criminals and terrorist should not be allowed to own a weapon – they will get them on the black market or steal the weapons, and all the while the anti gunners will blame the honest and responsible American gun owners. But what about the innocent citizen who gets put on one of these lists by mistake? Mistakes have been made before and will happen again. Wake up, America, before all our rights are just a memory!

I saw today in the news papers and on the web that more and more college students are being attacked on campus. The little people who don’t like freedom, hate guns, conservatives, don’t like anyone telling them what to look out for,get tattos and just hate policemen. They are going to be the real victoms if we loose our rights. The people who can’t protect themselves, will be the prey for the criminals. The criminals don’t care who you are,and if freedom goes,so does your rights. These little people will get the short end of the stick, all because they don’t think we should have guns and a Bill of Rights. The 4th of July is comming up and we should all be thankful for the men and who gave everything to save many. Does anyone remember that little clause in the Law known as Due Process?? How about innocent until proven guilty? Remember that one? And as for felons owning firearms, they’ve lost their right to own firearms through the due process of law, they were charged with a felony and found guilty by a jury of their peers, and through due process have lost their right to own or possess arms.
As for the rest of you libs why not get off the, it’s all GWB’s fault bandwagon? Incase you haven’t noticed he’s not the President anymore!! So get over it already! Your boy the Obamanator is president, you should be drinking the Kool-aid and dancing in the streets. (O wait that’s what you are doing. My bad!) And regardless of what GW did or didn’t do (in your opinion) to our rights, it still doesn’t give your guy the right to run roughshod over any other rights, as you/he may deem necessary. Remember two wrongs don’t make a right!
BTW: I don’t think we need to worry about a terrorist group sneaking an “A” bomb into DC! As that would be counter productive to their efforts. Washington as of January 2009 is their greatest ally, and they don’t need to do anything as the current administration will bring this country down faster than any bomb or attack ever could!
2010 & 2012 can’t get here fast enough! I just hope the Country can last that long, and survive the OBAMANATION!

I agree with TW. I also think that we should have secret tribunals for American citizens that the government considers potential terrorists. We could arrest them at night from their home and send them to a secret prison somewhere. After all, they are potential terrorists. They are far too potentially dangerous to be granted due process. Who knows, they could be your next door neighbor. They could be you.

I, as one, would think the government would allow pilots to carry weapons during flight.. Seems like pilots would be allowed to carry firearms to protect the passengers from terrorists attack. This don’t make a lot of since to me, for pilots take oaths to protect their planes and passengers. Of course our Washington leaders don’t have to worry about attacks because they are protected by secret service, which is a joke, I’ve seen secret service break their vows and hide behind someone with them coattails, very brave men, ha!!!!!!!. They need to double check some of our secret service men.

5 out of 5 Bad Guys surveyed say they prefer an unarmed victim to an armed one. Moreover, they prefer to meet their victims in the “Criminal Empowerment Zones” where they can be relatively assured of their own safety.

Any law/rule/regulation that will keep United States Citizens from lawfully owning and possessing a firearm is unconstitutional. This is especially true when denied right of due process, which this “watch list will do”. Any Senator/HR attempting this is violating the oath he/she took going into office and should be reported to the appropriate ethics committees at a minimum (with voting them out as the correct thing to do).

The US Supreme Court has upheld the 2nd Amendment to mean an individual, not collective right. In addition, US Supreme Court has upheld that Police Departments have no duty or responsibility to protect individual citizens and only serve the Public Safety interests.

What this means is that your own personal protection comes down to you. Since some today seem avoid Personal Responsibility at all costs, it is no wonder that they think no one should have guns. Some are just not up to the responsibility of the Freedoms they enjoy.

Re: “Oaths” to protect passengers: We take no such “oaths”. But as captain Im legally responsible for the safe operation of the flight. The fact Im armed does not authorize me to confront a terrorists to protect passengers. Im armed only as an ultimate means of denying entry into my flight deck.

Yep, a government worker am I. Yes, government officials can do what they want, couch it in terms and directives that only they understand but not the public. It happens all the time in government. How about the FOIL system that supposedly gives the public, news agency, and lawyers access to the files. Well, if the government worker or coworkers misplace or loose the document so it isn’t accessible to themselves when you ask for it, guess what, you don’t get it and there is no punishment for documents that “innocently” disappear without a trace, unless you were somehow able from independent sources of obtaining a copy of the document that supposedly isn’t any longer available.
Yup, who puts the person on the watchlist might not be so clear, but the name remains despite the inability of the government to show how it arrived there. And not having to show evidence of how your name got on the list is the same game but more direct via this watch list legislation.
Those are the facts, as seen in years of working for Government.

The global perspective of rights might restrict the rights of US citizens once the Constitution is nullified by government appointed and elected officials and politicians who curry favor with international players of world politics.
Will Hillary Clinton and the new US Embassador to the United Nations keep America from the grasp of UN political hacks who would relish America licking their dirt in a subjugation role?
Johnny Depp and the Matrix movie he starred in isn’t so outlandish to what is beginning to go on in USA today.
American Revolutionary hero’s and founders were all to understanding of the control and domination of England sought to impose on its American colonists. Only vigilance against the will of these elected pols who have no concience about American values can keep us on the right tack, and the 2nd Amendment is crucial to Americans freedoms as individuals and not subjects of the latest flavor of kingly Political administration that serves itself.

The problem seems to be getting it through the heads of those who continue to push these ludicrous bills that the criminals who are commiting most of the violent crimes with guns, always have and always will have guns no matter how many “Anti-gun” laws you emplace. The seemingly unknown secret here is #1 their guns aren’t registered or purchased legally and are therefore “Illegal” guns. #2 they are already criminals who don’t abide by any man’s laws or rules so they really don’t care and would actually prefer that the average law abiding citizen has no rights or weapons with which to protect their families and themselves. This would make their tasks of robbing, raping and killing much easier.
The thing that worries me the most is, why is a government so head strong on taking weapons from their law abiding citizens unless it is to disarm them for things yet to come. Especially a government that seems to be more concerned with the rights of “Illegal Immigrants” than the rights of the people paying the bills and their salaries. Remember Castro, Stalin and the likes? They did the same thing just prior to a violent government takeover of the citizens and then murdered millions of innocent, unarmed citizens who protested losing their freedom.
More people are killed by car accidents each year by far than with guns….so when are they going to ban cars? Oh yes, a car is not considered an assault weapon…..yet!

Beware America, something dark lurks in the shadows!

Either our elected officials think WE Americans are either too stupid to believe they know what is best for the good ole’ US of A or these very same elected officials have BIG BALLS!!! Either way WE Americans are their boss. They should do OUR bidding – not the other way around! We are seeing more and more attempts by THIS administration to intrude into our lives by tweaking the Constitution to the point of re-writing it to suit their needs. Obama and his gang (Pelosi, Reid, et al) are quickly bringing down the great country as sure as the terrorist would do by employing the “sweet talk” rhetoric that they believe we need to hear.

I faithfully served in the military for more than 20 years and I’m damn proud of it. I live in a great Christian society, or I thought I did. This administration apparently doesn’t understand the RIGHT to LIFE, LIBERTY, and the PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS, which our founding fathers invoked more than 200 years ago.

The RIGHT to LIFE has come to a screeching halt since the 1970’s. Abortion is a law of the land! This is nothing but the federal government to allow the murder of an unborn and defenseless child.

The RIGHT to LIBERTY is grinding to a halt as well. Secret watch lists employed by our government imposing into the lives of he plain and ordinary Mr. and Mrs America has been the vogue since 9/11. More watch lists won’t necessarily make America more secure.

The RIGHT to PURSUE HAPPINESS has been crashing all around for months. The market’s free fall from 15,000 was nearly catastrophic. Mr. and Mrs. America lost MILLIONS of dollars in wages (layoffs from jobs), 401K plans and retirements have all but disappeared, millions of homes foreclosed because banks weren’t honest to ensure potential home-buyers were solvent enough to pay the mortgage.

All of this and more is occurring under the Obama Watch.

We MUST – I emphasize MUST – make our elected officials pay attention to what WE want or need to ensure our RIGHTS are protected, otherwise this administration will unceremoniously guide us into TOTALITARIANISM and maybe ANARCHY!

Two questions
There are four reasons why someone wants gun control. Which is yours?
1 Tyrants want to disarm the people.
2 Criminals want to disarm the victims.
3 Ignorant want to protect the people from accidents.
4 Some unknown to me reason that you will name and define.

Where is the line separating when you would fight for the people and Constitution against an insurrection,
or fight for the people and Constitution against tyranny acting under color of law?

Please give your answers to me at gmweber@q.com especially those in favor of gun control.

I suppose once the right to bear arms is taken away and the gun owners are killed outright or sent to the concentration camps, then the Dems can enact their version of the Nuremberg Laws and strip away the rights of everyone that is not a registered Democrat. Maybe they’ll stage a “Night Of The Broken Glass” event against conservatives and their businesses. What he was really doing was gettin instrukshuns on how to swim under them levys in New Orluns and blow them thangs up. Them people kaint fool me. I got my edukation in the american publik skool sistem.

Not that this would happen but, as we all know or should know, the first thing a government does, to take over complete control of its citizens, is confiscate the guns. Just another step, but a very big one, in their march to control America as all the other dictators of the world do.
