Top deck, Turner Field. You can see the rest of the city’s shows from a distance during the game, then get a front-row seat for the best fireworks display in town.
Decatur Square. A 4th of July celebration with music provided by an all volunteer community concert band – THE CALLANWOLDE CONCERT BAND!!
This fine organization (www.calcb.org) entertains the crowd with marches, patriotic music, popular movie and show selections and ending the program with the 1812 Overture complete (and timed at the conclusion)with the fireworks display. This is truely a COMMUNITY EVENT!
sightseer – Shame on you. don’t tell anyone about the Decatur fireworks. It’s crowded enough already. Let people think the City of Atlanta has better fireworks. Keep them out of Decatur.
Well, at least they’ll think the best place to go is the Square. We won’t tell them you actually see the fireworks best at the C***** across the street from the P*** ****** or from the lot at the NE corner of *g*** *c*** ****e*e!
Inside my apartment watching the fireworks via HD TV without the hassle
of the crowds.Besides I live in Inman Park and I can step outside for a
view of all the displays.
Dahlonega, Georgia. Crowds gather on the campus of North Georgia College & State University, surrounded by the beautiful mountains and quaint town square. Events throughout the day, including live music. Bring a picnic and blanket to share in the festivities! About one hour north of Atlanta via GA-400N. Visit this website for more info: http://www.dahlonega.org/index.php/festivals/440-4th-of-july-family-celebration.html
I have been several fireworks in and outside of Metro Atlanta since been here for 15 years…and I promise you…downtown Lawrenceville blew me away. The fireworks is right on top of you!!! Have a Happy safe July 4th.
Stone Mountain Park. And you don’t have to go inside the park to see them! I take my 5 y.o. granddaughter to a nearby parking lot (be sure it has a view of the TOP of the mountain where they are set off). There are many places around the mountain to park. Many even park along the edge of Hwy. 78/Stone Mtn. Fwy. It’s the one time cops don’t say anything, unless you are impeding into traffic. Make sure you are pulled over completely on the shoulder. Going inside is even better, if you don’t mind paying a nominal fee…very small, considering…for a one-time visit. I’ve been to several displays in the area, and these are always the best!!! Happy 4th to everyone!!! This is the ONE thing (hopefully) that Obama can’t take away from us!!!
New Birth has the best. you can pitch a tent, play games, listen to good music & bbq all day and fire woeks at night. The best part, it’s on church grounds so no alcohol or drunks!
Marietta – with out a doubt – much to see and do before hand and the fireworks always draws a huge crowd. We have enjoyed the event starting with the parade in the morning, time on the Square and then getting out spot to watch the fireworks after our picnic.
Norcross on the 3rd and Auburn, Ga on the 4th. No Gwinnett Glows this year, so small town Auburn is the quaint place to be. Can’t get any closer to the action!!
I agree with the Stone Mountain folks. It’s nice especially with kids, because you get to sit down on the lawn, rather than standing around a crowded parking lot, like at Lenox. And you can make a day of it instead of just showing up at dark. Spend the afternoon in the park, then get over to the lawn for the laser show and the fireworks. Overall, it just seems to me to be much more relaxing and enjoyable then all the hustle and bustle of the Atlanta shows.
City of Jackson puts on a great show every year at Daughtry Park. It’s $5 a car load to watch them from the park but you can watch them for free in the Piggly Wiggly Parking lot or places close to the Park. In the park before the fireworks they have live music, bouncy houses for the kids, concessions, etc. It’s good family fun. My family and I have been going for several years and plan to go back this year.
If you’re looking to get away, I’d say Gatlinburg. Great fireworks follows up a big day that starts with the midnight parade the neight before. It’s awesome! and very patriotic. LOts of floats and balloons and bands and military.
Nashville is the best. I’ve seen displays all over the South. Every major city boasts theirs is bigger, longer, louder, etc. None of them is better than Music City. For pure enjoyment from home tune in the Boston Pops. A&E used to carry the whole thing, but now one of the networks bought the rights and scaled it back to one hour. Still is very entertaining.
For those of you that have enjoyed the Lawrenceville Fireworks – Did you know that they will not be displayed this year… Read on… this is posted on Gwinnett County’s website under events, then click Gwinnett Glows.
Fireworks tradition ends after 21 years
In the face of declining revenues and the difficulty in raising sponsorship funds, Gwinnett County Government officials have decided the County will no longer organize the annual Gwinnett Glows 4th of July celebration. Gwinnett Glows has been a fun community tradition for two decades, but the old adage “all good things must come to an end” is particularly apt in this case given the current state of the economy.
If you live on the southside of town, go to Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton on July 2nd. Come watch the Thursday Thunder Racing Series and one of the best fireworks show around. 5.00/adults & 1.00/kids(6-11)
My friends and I usually hit the Woodstock fireworks in front of the Super Target off of GA Highway 92. Good open location and a convenient store in case we forget everything.
Loganville has a great display at Oasis Church. Good 20-25 minute show and the Fireworks never stop the whole show. The guys who do this show are the best!!!!!
The Fireworks in Dalonega last year were the BEST. I had gone the previous night to the ones in Cumming, and they were not even comparible! We met some friends and ended up being in the same parking lot as where they were launching the fireworks. They seemed to last for hours, and it was just awesome!
Hey, GaOnMyMind…tell me how you feel in 4 years. THEN we’ll talk. This man is taking everything from you and you don’t even realize it! Of course, you are probably on the RECEIVING end of the theft. I work, you get the money for it. Welfare is for the lazy.
@ Gaonmymind…why does everything have to come down to RACE? And WHAT change is Obama offering you? What is this “change” he is offering? Is it really what you want? Visit a socialist country (not on my dime this time!) and see what it’s like. All you are worried about is getting something for nothing. I have to assume that you are black, since you bring up the point of his color. (I said nothing about his skin…I don’t care WHAT color he is…he is running our country down the crapper at breakneck speed.)
Any “president” that says our Consitution is an out-dated, worthless piece of paper and tries to change it all single-handedly worries me a LOT. You should ALL be worried.
This is supposed to be ideas on where to see the best fireworks and you guys are just turning it into a political debate. Get over it and enjoy the 4th, no one is going to take it away from us. And thanks to everyone who actually wrote where to see fireworks, as a new person to Atlanta it was very helpful!
Lake alatoona. July 3rd at 9:30pm. A private campsite called Delta puts on a firework display. It last about 20 mins and is huge. I MEAN HUGE. Drive into Bridgemill and go down Heatherbrook trace. Or go to the little river marina and park.Dont know if you heard me “Its huge”
ohh if you do the one in woodstock. Take the road that goes past BJS and Lowes and keep going. a hidden parking lot is back there. park all the way by the Golf Course club house and you will be amazed. And any time the AJC post a open link Racist Georgians will post. And Im white so if Im saying something then it must be bad
Like many natives we flee the city on most holidays. We prefer to head to the lake…hard to beat a picnic on your boat and firewoks. If you are staying in town try hiking up Arabia Mountain in Dekalb. Zero crowds and you can watch almost every display around Metro Atlanta.
If you want to take photos of fireworks, don’t try to go to Lenox Mall. In the past, I’ve been chased out of there by the police, even though I was trying to take pictures from public property (sidewalk). They cited the Patriot Act, and threatened to arrest me if I didn’t pack up my camera and tripod and leave. I’ve had much better luck in Peachtree City and Savannah, GA.
Lanier Speedway is the best bang for your buck. Located north of atlanta up 85 it is a great night for the family with a ton of racing in all divisions, with the advertised best firework show in north georiga. Where else could you see 600 horsepower late models and a great firework show. This years show is on July 3rd. Gates open at 4 Qualifying at 5 Racing at 7. Where Georgia Does Nascar!
Daufuskie Island, SC….hands down the best fireworks ever. Bring your beach chair and cooler…5 feet from the water, the sound of waves crashing, the smell of the salt air, a DJ, girls in bikini’s passing out shots, and the fireworks go on for hours. Either take the ferry from hilton head ( and rent a golf cart for the day) or take your boat to Daufuskie and dock at Freeport marina or the public dock, make sure you rent a golf cart to get around. You can also see Savanah and Hilton Head fireworks at the same time…very cool and not many people! NO THUGS, NO TRAFFIC, NO POLICE, NO WORRIES!!!!
Try Marshside mamma’s for dinner and live entertainment or Daufuskie Island Crab company..they also have cottages to rent if you want to stay the night.
Well my favorite place used to be Lenox because they had the symphony there. They still have the best fireworks but I want to go to Verizon to hear ASO again.
City of Jackson (Butts county) puts on a great show every year at Daughtry Park. It’s $5 a car load to watch them from the park.. No doubt the very best place to watch fireworks. Our whole family goes early and we all bring food and sit around picking guitar and eating . They have watermelon eating contest and all kindsa fun things for the kids to do.They have a live band and its just plain fun and well secured.
The balcony of my townhouse. Lenox fireworkds without the crowds….
GRAMMAW and others….Remember Abe Lincoln’s famous quote regarding CAUSE AND EFFECT? In part:
“The past is the cause of the present”…but we all know that , don’t we?
Out on beautiful Lake Oconee, in a large Pontoon Boat, with great friends, watching the INCREDIBLE fireworks display put on by the Ritz Carlton on Lake Oconee.
It’s our own little slice of Paradise.
Centenniel is great but crowded.
GRAMMAW, can’t we do anything without someone blaming Obama. Remember Obama is trying to staighten out the mess Bush created.
The West Egg Cafe on Howell Mill d. (@ 14th Street) in West Midtown…great coffee (bottomless), french toast, pancakes, bacon, eggs and more! They have a great atmosphere, they’re not a “chain”, not to mention they have some of the best pimiento cheese I’ve ever had! Yum!!!
I will be moving to Georgia in July…and I needed all of this information! I care less how people talk about ecomomy…and who the president in, it is time for all of us no matter what race we are to not trust in man..but to simply trust in God, or at least what you deem as positive. I am simply seeking a great place to live! I have lived in Chicago all of my life, and looking for a little warmth, this winter soooo lay off politics…and let a newcomer know where the happenings are!
Waffle house… Que: does anyone know who might have “goetta” on their breakfast menue? Have found it in Ky, Ind & Tenn but not around here. To lazy to make it at home. Thanks
Original Pancake House, Windward Parkway location in Alpharetta. This place starts with a straightforward, top-quality product and then the staff executes extremely well, again and again. Go with the pancakes, fried eggs and bacon plate. Cannot be beat. And the coffee is extremely good–and served with rich, delicious creme. Perfect all the way around.
Copeland in Buckhead has the best Sunday brunch Ever!!!
2 choclate fontains fruit bar, seafood bar, omlete station, french toast station, more more more.
Live jazz band at the same time. THE BOMB!!!
Sweet Melissa’s in Decatur – everything homemade and delicious – sizeable portions and live jazz on Sundays, Ria’s and Thumbs Up if you can get a table
Anything with Bagel in the name is obviously omitted – we are in the south. It should be biscuit centric. If Hardees was full service breakfast their biscuits would not taste so good, so it must be The Hickory House, the big brother to JR’s Log House. The Waffle House certainly ranks top 3.
Parish in highlands, thumbs up on the westside or the one by edgewood, nancy Gs in buckhead, R thomas on peachtree, gilberts in midtown. don’t be one of the fools waiting hours for flying biscuit – its pretty mediocre now sorry to break the news.
Sweet Melissa’s Restaurant. Homemade biscuits, “Hopple Popple” scramble, generous omlets, inventive/delicious home fries, and much more. Great for Sunday brunch with live jazz. Seating indoors or outdoors.
Douceur de France in Marietta is hard to beat for a great French breakfast. Despite there being no such thing as “French toast” in France, they’ve one-upped the American version for sure!
Louise’s by Kennesaw Mountain is the best greasy spoon around. I could eat a dozen of their “cathead” biscuits.
The other old standby has to be the Waffle House. Besides, it’s local!
Uptown Breakfast in Alpharetta — great French toast, excellent pancakes, waffles, blintzes, potato pancakes … everything I’ve had there has been really good and generously portioned. If you’re only counting ITP, OK Cafe has delicious breakfast options. Bagel Palace is probably my all-time favorite, but, well, as someone pointed out, since we’re in the South, I suppose we ought to choose something more traditional.
1. J.R’s Log House, the best biscuits and gravy in the northeastern part of town.
2. Old Hickory House in Dunwoody, the staff is great and the salted country ham is great.
3. Biscuit Barn up in Johns Creek, long lines but worth it.
In Bed of course!! But if he/she doesn’t like it in bed or home-cooked, then First Awakenings in Monterey, CA — don’t miss the “All that Razz” pancakes: raspberry, coconut, and granola; so good, they’ll make you slap your granny!
Vittles Restaurant and Gift Shop in Marietta Georgia is the best breakfast anywhere. Whether it be the skillet breakfasts, Freddies or the everyday breakfast specials, nobody leaves hungry!
Great atmosphere and if you like fresh ground coffee, your cup is never empty.
My house: oscar mayer baon, bob evens sausage, johnsonville turkeysausage, smoky links, biscuts, onion potatoes(world famous), pan cakes, cheese eggs, grits, mrs butterwortrhs, grape jelly, oj and wal mart grape juice(everyone is welcome) 2. Golden coral-Douglasville
Henry’s Louisiana Grille in Acworth (Saturdays only). Ooh la la Omelet with fried crawfish and andouille sausage and biscuits. And they have Community coffee…
Flying Biscuit has the best seafood, steak, pizza, pulled pork, BBQ ribs, ice cream, breakfast, lunch, dinner, Chinese food, Italian food, hamburgers, sweet tea, french fries, hot dogs, unsweet tea, fried chicken, and sushi. Best of the Big A…a contest to give everyone equal chance to lose to Flying Biscuit.
Family Tradition in Woodstock – their homeade biscuits and country ham will make your tounge slap your brains out! (you can even get red eye gravy)! Henry’s in Acworth for brunch would be next in line!
Highland Bakery! Weekends there is a wait, but well worth it! Their egg and cheese is really good and there sweet potato pancake is really sweet but so good. And grits lover or not…there grits are yummy
1. Highland Bakery (sweet potatoe pancakes are da bomb)
2. Thumbs Up
3. Flying Biscuit (Still trying to figure out how they get their grtis like that)
4. My house
Pastries A GoGo in Decatur hands down. The owner is an award winning pastry chef but everthing they have is great. Eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, waffles, sausage gravy with their incredible biscuits, YUM !!!
Loretta’s Country Kitchen in Oakwood – loads of boats and trucks lined up in the dark every morning they’re open. A “meat and three” with a great breakfast buffet! Loretta’s is the bomb…
People! The BEST breakfast was the question, not the best breakfast when I’m drunk and nothing else is open. Thus, Waffle House is out. If you think it is still in the running, then you are not qualified to comment on anything related to food. Now, my nominees are Social House, West Egg, Thumbs Up, Ria’s, and Silver Skillet(what Waffle House wishes it was). The eggs benedict at Pastries A Go Go is worth nominating as the best dish in Atlanta period.
Finally saw someone mention the Social House on Howell Mill. Easily the best breakfast I’ve had here in 11 years. Amazing food. I think I’m headed there now…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
when I’m takin a break during our soul train filming we have a breakfast bar and those syrup chicken wing biscuits are the best anywhere! i don’t know the guy’s restaurant name but they call him rambeaux
social house on howell mill is AMAZING!! thumbs up, crescent moon, and highland bakery get honorable mention! ria’s is good but not enough of a selection. flying biscuit is just ok in comparison to the others. will check out west egg and parish. j christophers didnt bowl me over…
Fagan’s Biscuit Barn on 141 in Forsyth County. Homemade biscuits, tender ham, country ham, smoked sausage, tenderloin, salmon patties, steak, chicken, streak of lean, sausage, bacon, eggs (scrambled, fried, over easy, milk or sausage gravy, potato pancakes, hash brown patties, grits.
What more could you want? Not only great food but the feeling of being at home.
The best fireworks in Gwinnett are in Sugar Hill on July 3rd. At E E Robinson Park they will have “The Return” a Beatles tribute band, food, rides, and a movie “Kung Fu Panda” after a 30 minute fireworks display. Check http://www.cityofsugarhill.com for more info.
6Digitballin – thanks for the shout out! i’m glad you enjoy my homemade biscuits. they better than any biscuit in ATL..I’m laughin at all these people who are saying waffle house, ihop, etc. when we all know daym well my food is the best hands down! hey, ATL – get at me and eat my biscuits! They’ll make you want to slap yo dawg. Tell PETA to shut up and grab a biscuit too while they trying to close my shop down because I fight my pit bulls!
Forget all those places “Marietta Diner” is where it is at not only is the food great but the diverse workers makes it a pleasent place to eat breakfast, and you will need to be hungry when you come!
I’m surprised that Snellville Baptist Church is not mentioned here. Great view from Snellville Methodist and they usually have free entertainment there.
If you are planning to come to Stone Mountain Park for the fireworks, make sure you arrive before 3 or 4 pm. The park is known for closing its gates due to the large crowds. Plan on paying a $10 car fee for coming into the gate as well. This $10 car fee has gone up from the normal $8 parking fee and will remain $10 for the rest of the year. The fireworks will be shot from the top of the mountain this year as well, but no one will be allowed on top of the mountain after 8pm. Fireworks will begin after the lasershow around 10 to 10:15 pm.
the top of brasstown bald. its the highest point in the state and you can see fireworks from all over northeast ga. your even looking down on some of them.
SNELLVILLE’s American Celebration on JULY 3rd is a very big event with car show, food, music, fun & of course a Huge Fireworks presentation at
the Baptist & Methodist Churchs in downtown area.
Lots of good choices. Lenox is hard to beat if you get right under them! Marietta Sq is good, start with the parade shop all day and then the fireworks. Course, I can’t beat my own subsdivision where I can walk over to the country club and they do a pretty good job!!
THE DULUTH REXALL GRILL HAS THE BEST BREAKFAST EVER! ALL HOME COOKED AND DELICIOUS. HUGE BEAUTIFUL BROWN BISCUITS RIGHT OUT OF THE OVEN AND THE HOME COOKED LUNCHES ARE WONDERFUL TOO, ALONG WITH THE BEST CHOCOLATE FUDGE CAKE ANYWHERE. IF YOU TRY IT ONCE YOU WILL DEFINITELY GO BACK FOR MORE. WE LOVE JUST WATCHING GAIL AND RACHEL COOK.
IT IS A GREAT PLACE ON SATURDAY MORNING TO HAVE A GOOD LEISURELY FAMILY
BREAKFAST. EVERYTHING IS HOMEMADE,INCLUDING ALL OF THE WONDERFUL CAKES.
St. Augustine, Florida’s fireworks were fabulous last year, but when we’re in Atlanta, we always go to Norcross on the 3rd. Great fireworks and a relaxed atmosphere, and you’re not in a parking lot for two hours trying to get home.
Two eggs and sausage links…thanks for the come-back. Thought that might be the case in my quest to find “goetta” for breakfast. If someone would find a way to put this on their menu it would be a huge hit. You are right, I have my recipe from the old world from Cincinnati. It is sold commercially, but I lost the address from where to order. Guess I will have to make my next batch. How do you have any left to freeze? Never lasts that long around my house. Thanks again.
Lanier Nat’l Speedway in Braselton/Chestnut Mtn. has one of the best displays that I’ve enjoyed over the years. Even if you aren’t at the races, folks pull over on the side of Hwy53 and watch from vantage points along the road. The display usually goes on for 20+mins with some great effects. Give it a try if you’re in the area.
I’ve seen several around Atlanta over the past 15 years, but Downtown Norcross is my favorite. There’s live music, we get food at one of the fabulous restaurants, and the crowd is big, but friendly. They have two newly renovated parks this year, too — the huge new playground at Thrasher Park, and a beautiful new space with waterfalls and walking trail at Lillian Webb Park.
Anywhere where there is no pre political speeches. I live in Newnan and cant stand the Newnan one because you get all the local reps up there jabbing on holding up the Show. The Peachtree City fireworks is one of the best because of the view you can get for miles.
On the Internet, at rock bottom prices! If you’re female, I hear Unique Boutique is Roswell is the way to go. Paying retail/storefront shopping is so 2007. This is the new economy!
Mall of Georgia Nordstrom’s — they actually wait on you, bring you all the shoes you’ve indicated a liking for as well as boxes and boxes of other shoes that are similar. Old fashioned shoe store service with a pianist playing nearby on the weekends make shopping here a delight.
Mitzi’s Shoe Box in VaHi!!!! A few years ago I spent a bonus check there and have never felt a “shoe/boot high” quite like that. Awesome. I love the boutique Mitzi & Ramano too!
Off Broadway Shoes of course! Great selection, greater prices. Enormous value…we always find what we need…plus more. Come on…we can’t be the only ones who know about this place.
If you’re in Atlanta and have internet service, ZAPPO’S has good deals and good selection, free shipping also. Of course you can also search/ order from ZAPPO’S from anywhere but that’s not what this survey is about. Atlanta is the location we’re supposed to reference.
Big Peach Running has the best customer servie and fit process for running shoes! They are good folks who care about getting it right and they have a strong commitment to the community by giving a discount if you turn in a pair of shoes which they then donate to the homeless.
Took my 35 year old daughter to Off Broadway Shoes for the first time last week. Three aisles and she was dizzy – “shoe overload”, she said! Great shoes, great selection, really great prices!
I love A Step Above Footwear in Midtown. I wear a 12 and can always find my size. They only carry sizes 9 thru 13. they have a website http://www.astepabovefootwear.net
Bennies, especially for men and ESPECIALLY those with big feet. The people that work there have worked there for years, so the customer service is the best. Plus, Bennies actually repairs shoes.
A company that sells shoes also repairs shoes…hmmm, must be something to their shoes if they have to repair them frequently – and, yes, I know that Louie, Jack and Jaime all started a cobblers and built their empire that is now run by their son’s and son’s in law, and, on some occasions, still by Jack, Louie and Jaime!
I love the shoe trunk shoes. I recently went with a friend to a ShoeflyShoes trunk show/shoe party and absolutely loved it. Nice shoes! Great Prices! Awesome atmosphere! It was like being at home and trying on as many shoes as you would like. Website is http://www.shoeflyshoesatlanta.com
K & G WOMEN AND FOR MENS STORE HAVE THE BEST SHOES AT GREAT PRICES, AND FOR MENS , WOMEN AND KIDS NAMRE BRAND SHOES TOO AT GREAT PRICES TRY ****SHOE SHOW** BY FAR THE BEST SELECTION AND GREAT RESAONABLE PRICES.
Shoefly Shoes is the best place AND the most fun that I’ve had shopping for shoes in Atlanta. Cute selection, awesome prices, phenomenal music, delicious food and the “Shoefly Martini” that is served at the invitation only trunk show/party doesn’t hurt! You can go to the website to shop online or get added to the invite list is http://www.shoeflyshoesatlanta.com. You won’t be disappointed.
Toco Hills Shoe Gallery – we have three generations that rate this store number one. The shoes selection is varied(remember three generations) and they have a wide range of sizes but the customer SERVICE is what makes this the best place to shop.
Hell? Nordtrom Rack anybody? It’s the discount verison of Nordstrom located across the street from the Mall of Georgia Nordstrom location in Buford. It’s like the TJ Maxx for Nordstrom Department Stores.Only one in Georgia.
For Sure it’s COLLEGE PARK SHOES, AND FOR ALL THE LADIES FROM NEW ORLEANS THAT LOVE DANIELL GREENS , GREAT SELECTIONS ! THEY ARE HAVING A RED TAG BUY ONE GET A PAIR FREE……YES FREE !
College Park Shoes is the best shoe store. The service is wonderful, from being greeted at the door to helping you find the perfect pair of shoes. I always make it a point to shop during the Red Tag Sale, or by one get one free sale. My greatest purchase to date includes two pair of Via Spiga shoes for $100.00. If you need a unique color or style, this is your place. If you are a J Rene fan, this is your place. If the man in your life loves a stylish pair of shoes, this is your place.
FYI, the store is located in downtown College Park, on Main Street, directly accross from the College Park Marta Station.
The jalapeno cornbread at Picadilly is good and I also like the cracklin cornbread at Harolds, but other than that I’ve been very disappointed by cornbread at restaurants.
Cornbread should not be made with sugar added. Make it with selfrising cornmeal, oil, water, and milk and a little salt. Have your oven preheated, iron frying pan heated, and then oiled. Pour very soupy mix of all ingredients into heated pan and cook in 425F for 20 to 25 minutes.
food depot has the best frozen jalepeno ones bt carletta wont let me go there anymore cause she know i love to see them fine womens up in there. umhm last time she showed up on me she slapped me in the express line and whepped my yellow neck with some pink stripes! her nails were just did too so you know i was hurtin! my daddy doesnt like that though.
Fox Brothers, or the Jalepeno cornbread at Joel’s, next to the Hurt Building at Five Points. Eats also has good cornbread, especially when you crumble it into the black beans!!!
Not a big fan of the cracklins. What ARE they anyway? My vote is Matthew’s Cafeteria in Tucker, which coincidentalley was voted the best fried chicken in and around Atlanta. Matthews corn muffins are just dense enough, crisp on the outside and very flavorful. Cut them in half and slather with butter. Yum Yum!! Eat ‘em up!!
I have to say that everyone likes my cornbread better than a restaurants. I have even had co-workers ask me if I would cook them a pan which I have done numerous times.
I make mine with self-rising cornmeal, crisco, and lowfat buttermilk. No water and no sugar. Pour into greased pan or iron skillet and cook on 360 until brown. This has a wonderful crust and most people like it hot with just butter. It is not good made with whole milk or with sugar. That is not southern cornbread. It is also good to drop into a hot skillet and cook in patties.
Mine! 1 cup self rising white cornmeal (not cornmeal mix), mix in 3 tbsp crisco (butter style), 1/2 cup self rising flour, 1 egg and enough buttermilk to make it pourable from your bowl. Mix well and Pour into a medium size greased cast iron skillet, hot from a preheated 475 degree oven and then slide your full skillet onto your middle oven rack. Takes about 20 minutes for it to rise and brown. Delicious!
If you have to ask what cracklins are, then you haven’t really gotten out much. Go to Harold’s and try their cornbread. Then, you will admit that it’s the best on the planet. Go ahead…I’ll wait…
Apparently, most of those who’ve commented on this specific topic have no clue about what “real” cornbread tastes like in and around Atlanta. Take a visit to “GLADY’S AND RON’S CHICKEN & WAFFLES.” I’m willing to bet money once you’ve had one of their famous corn muffins you’ll be begging for more! Unparalleled!
Who has the sweetest iced tea, who has the greasiest hamburger, who puts the most fatback in their collard greens, come on Shane go back to writing about music.
Since my grandmother passed I do…Pine Mountain white meal, a dash of salt, 3/8 water, melted Crisco…cooked in Crisco in a cast iron skillet and ON TOP OF THE STOVE!
Not sure where the idea started, but that sweet cornbread is just plain disgusting and totally wrong. It’s a sure sign of a restaurant I won’t frequent if they serve that nasty stuff. I haven’t had good cornbread ANYWHERE in Atlanta because too many places serve that nasty sweet cornbread. I am basically afraid to order it, because most restaurants seem to think that is the only way to make cornbread. Too bad they have absolutely no clue.
Millie’s recipe is just like my grandma used to make it. Talk about a great meal anytime of the day, cornbread shoved down into a glass of whole milk and eaten with a tablespoon. Mmmmm!
My wife, Jackie, makes the best cracklin’ break in Georgia. She uses a full pound of cracklins’ to two flapjack Lodge skillets, hot, greased and cooked at 425 degrees for 18 minutes. The bread has a lot of crust and a lot of cracklins’ – good enough to eat like cake when it’s just out of the oven. She also makes a wonderful pan of Mexican Cornbread, with onions, jalapeno peppers and cream corn in the cornmeal mixture, then puts plenty of sliced processed Cheddar Cheese sandwiched into two parts. Cooks in hot 10 inch iron skillet for 25 minutes at 425 degrees. Do not use fresh jalapenos – the ones in the jar are much better and you can get them now already diced at Wal-Mart.
The best corn bread is at my mamma’s house. She makes the best cracklin’ corn bread! She has also made “confetti” corn bread that has the different colored bell peppers in it .. as well as “jalapeno` ” corn bread – best crumbled up in a glass of cold buttermilk.
Harold’s and The Colonnade. The Colonnade’s Cornbread Muffins and a glass of tea would make anyone a fine meal. Harold’s, throw in a bowl of that stew along with a stack of their Cornbread, a meal fit for a King.
If you have never eaten at either place, you’re missing something special. Look ‘em up and drop by for lunch.
Best cornbread in Atlanta is at Colonnade, Harold’s, and Old Hickory House at Northlake. OHH is probably the best of the 3 — split and covered with black-eyed peas, alongside fried okra & collard greens. Heaven.
SINCE I CAN’T FIND PERKERSON’S SELF-RISING CORN MEAL ANYMORE(THEY MUST BE OUT OF BUSINESS0, THE BEST CORN BREAD CANNOT BE MADE. FOR A CHAIN, CRACKER BARREL IS AS GOOD AS ANY.
Sorry to the folks that like it, but I have to agree with Marcus on Harold’s – didn’t care for the food, incl. the cornbread. My vote for sweet cornbread is Roaster’s. Vote for non-sweet is The Vortex. They throw it on the griddle & it comes to you hot, soft & buttery. Yum!!!
Start with 2 cups White Lily Buttermilk Cornmeal, 1&1/2 cup of buttermilk, 1/4 cup of oil, 1 egg, 1/4 cup of melted butter and the secret ingredient ……. 1 cup of sourcream. Do not overmix, batter should have some lumps. Overmixing will give you a tough heavy texture and that whereas great southern cornbread is moist and soft on the inside with a nice crust. You must bake this in a greased cast iron skillet!! Bake at 425 for 25 minute. You all can thank me later.
since my mother passed, i make the best but it is not as good since you can’t buy perkerson’s cornmeal anymore. as far as restaurants go; matthews and collonade
Fox Sports Grill for that old school cornbread with pieces of corn in it and light sugar or Boston Market for their cornbread loaf…a hint of sugar and always soft!
The thomas Restaurant at the Farmer’s Market in Atlanta is authentic and also makes biscuits. Melvin, one
old famous establishment on Northside, use to work for the Thomas family and learned his talant from them.
Three Rivers corn meal, one egg, diced onions and buttermilk..Mix all together..Heat a cast iron skillet with oil and once theoil is hot, pour a small amount into the other mix, stir, then pour into skillet..Needs to be kinda thick..Cook in preheated overn at 450 for about 20-25 minutes..Best in the state…I also cook it the same way with hot peppers & shredded cheese..
Cornbread is not the same since Perkerson’s corn meal left the shelf! Todd, where do you find Pine Mountain corn meal. By the way, Harold’s cornbread is pretty darn good!
My friend Patricia Dowdy in Forest Park, Ga mades the best corn bread in the world. It taste good even if you freeze some for another day. Of course you know her chicken dressing is good because it starts from great cornbread
Well, if it contains sugar, it isn’t cornbread, A corn muffin, maybe. But Cornbread it isn’t.
As far as the best in Atlanta, I think our restaurants are sorely lacking. If it isn’t made in a skillet with hot grease and buttermilk and no flour, just cornmeal, it isn’t good. Greenwood’s muffins are OK but a little soft in texture – they may sneak some flour in. I had Harold’s once and it was tasty too but is cracklin-cornbread (not plain cornbread). If I remember correctly, I think you can get good “hoe cakes” (cornbread fried in little patties like pancakes) at Son’s Place that were very tasty.
If anyone knows where there is real, cornbread in ATL other than my kitchen, and by the looks of the comments a few other home kitchens, let me know. Heard good things about Carvers but haven’t been yet. Do they get the cornbread right there? I am not optimistic!!
Harolds is great. The first time I went there – I took one bite of the cornbread and it took me back to my childhood. It takes lard to make real cornbread.
Harolds does have terrific cornbread…if you don’t know how to bake your own. I use Martha White Hot Rise… it’s the best in my book.. but there are also a few other good cornmeals that work quite well. Dear Edna Lewis also made wonderful crackling cornbread! I’m certain that all in Heaven now have fantastic cornbread! Just for the record…I can’t stand sweet cornbread… That’s what dessert is for.. Good Cornbread should be served with REAL BUTTER and just enjoyed! I also like using the black iron skillets that are seperated into triagular pieces… that way everyone gets some crunch. Yum….
Smokehouse BBQ in Alpharetta has by FAR the BEST BEST BEST cornbread!! Cornbread muffins, real corn mixed in… it’s AMAZING!!! Their food is amazing, too… it’s the best!
Here’s how I make cornbread: http://mcraigweaver.com/recipes/cornbread.htm This is my own recipe for Cornbread Muffins. It makes a relatively sweet cornbread, similar to what you might find in some restaurants.
I am a deep south cook, never does sugar go in cornbread.I use hoovers meal, fine ground, and my kids , all grown, love it, I made soda bread in my skillet, hoe cake in my flat skillet ,and hot oil for doughboys.I use meal,1egg,salt to taste, and fourth spoon of baking soda, beat well,as I add buttermilk.pour in well greased iron fry pan ,the secret is fill with enough oil ,1/4 cup , till it will run back up the sides of pan when pour in mix. bread gone wild………
HAROLDS is some fine eatin’!! Brunswick stew with cracklin’ cornbread, all you need after that is some nanner puddin, ya’ll!!
it’s sad to have to eat cornbread with sugar added like some restaurants in Atlanta do. Mary Mac’s and Colonnade’s muffins are good too, just the natural corn sweetness, no sugar and no whole milk.
Millie’s is like mine and my mama’s. But my Grandma’s (Elkmont Alabama) corn bread and corn sticks were heavenly and Lord knows no one is fit to touch her chicken fryer (or her fried chicken!)
Most restaurant cornbread seems to be simple, basic stuff. That’s Good!
My favorite cornbread has to be simple old ho cakes. My granny cooked them every morning of her life. Just white cornmeal, maybe a little flour if you have it, and some salt. Then add water to make it soupy. No leavening! Ho cakes should be flat, and fried hot so you get good crunchy stuff at the edges. Simple, cheap, and goes with anything from greens to syrup.
Harold’s has the best cornbread – gotta love that cracklin. Personally, if you put anything sweet in the cornbread ya’ll must be yankees – please put the sugar where it belongs…..in the tea before it gets cold!
da Judge – I’ve been to Harold’s numerous times and have had their delicious BBQ and brunswick stew. Yes, I’ve had the cornbread – I STILL don’t know what cracklins are exactly. Please enlighten me…I’m waiting…
Seriously, do ya’ll ever get up here to Tucker? Matthew’s cafeteria on Main Street is THE best crnbread in town. I’ve been to Harold’s. I’ve been to Mary Mac’s, I go to the Colonnade on a regular basis and of all of these, Mattew’s is the best.
Here’s a comment from Florida from a former Atlanta girl. Millie has it right about cornbread. That’s how I make it. Don’t let anyone put sugar in your cornbread. Nobody in restaurants down here knows how to make cornbread. Cracker Barrel cornmeal muffins are real good. Be glad you have a choice of good cornbread places.
Harolds without a question, after the bottle came Harolds, the rest is history, where ever I live , I always come back for the best BBQ and Cornbread, Fulton High Man Here.
I actually had my cornbread recipe published in the AJC Food Section around 25 years ago. Several years later, I was visiting a new friend and saw my recipe, that she had cut out of the newspaper, taped to her kitchen cabinet. The secret is a hot skillet, NO sugar, and buttermilk. Aside from mine, I REALLY like Matthew’s.
Hey Bro’Man. I like my pig skins fried real crispy. I guess that’s why I’m not a fan of the cracklins. I would rather have my cornbread without the soft pig skin. Doesn’t sound very appetizing.
I do not think good restaurant cornbread exists. Have to make it myself with whole stone ground corn meal, butter and buttermilk. However, the Grit in Athens has really good cornbread made wiith corn, peppers and other veggies (good because the cornbread base is good). Recipe is in their cookbook, I think.
I’ve had crackling cornbread at Harolds that was great, little crunchy morsels of meat mixed in the cornbread ,,but other times the cracklings were gooey ,slimey, rubbery, we kinda picked thru it,,,,so my question is how can you prepare the cracklings so they are consistently crunchy and edible?
Without a doubt, the best cornbread is my own. No sugar, made in a cast iron skillet, I’ve been making it since I was 12 years old! Can’t make biscuits worth a darn but my cornbread is fine.
Carvers cornbread isn’t all that great…There is nothing wrong with putting jalapenos in cornbread..Butter on hot cornbread is yummy..My older sister would always take the “crust” of the cornbread and put mayo on it…This is not to bad…
Growing up, my Mother always made her cornbread with half flour, half meal and water only…This might sound crazy to some, but it actually taste good..
I happen to believe that my cornbread is excellent. I use White Lilly Cornmeal, creamstyle corn by
Del Monte, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, buttermilk, 1 – 2 eggs. I may or may not use sour cream, or may or may not use sugar as well. It’s dependent on my mood…I season with bacon grease and pour into a hot cast iron skillet which is greased with bacon grease.then I let it sit on a gas burner until it bubbles around the edges and starts to form the crust. Then into a 425 degree oven until it is browned on top. Usually 20 to 25 minutes. I love it with roast beef with gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, tomatoes and iced tea.
Back a few years ago, I was painting murals for a very wealthy woman in the Buckhead area. She invited me to eat with her and her husband often. She always served the best cornbread I’ve ever eaten, made from freshly-ground corn (from her Whisper-Mill grinder), olive oil, buttermilk, salt and baking soda (no eggs). I’ve tried to make her recipe many times…it’s good but hers was better.
My mom, Cheryl, makes the best cornbread. When we have company, usually her cornbread is eaten up before we get to the main meal. It is finger licking good.
The Southern Skillet on Peachtree Industrial makes cornbread as good as any. With a lunch you get two round pieces of cornbread and all the margerine, butter or fruit spreads you could want.
I am very lucky in that the best cornbread in Atlanta is made by my wife. She fixes it in a cast iron skillet and it comes out golden brown and delicious. Thanks Honey!
My grandmother and mother (also from Alabama) taught me how to make cornbread–JUST LIKE Millie and Melissa’s Mom. The trick is heating up your shortening in the iron skillet in the hot oven, pouring the hot melted shortening (or oil) in the cornbread mix and then quickly pouring the batter back into the skillet. It sizzles. I remember always having at least one pan of cornbread served with dinner (their noon meal). They also served at the same dinner a big bread bowl filled with fresh homemade yeast rolls. I would gain 10 pounds on just about every summer visit to my grandparents’ house. IT WAS WORTH IT!
HENRY’s Louisiana Grill in downtown Acworth has the best cornbread in town! Henry the owner comes around during dinner witha a plate of it to sample and they serve the cornbread instead of bread on the tables! Ooh La La it is the best and melts in your mouth. (http://www.chefhenrys.com/henrys/index.html)
Colonnade & Cracker Barrel. No corn kernels – ruins the whole thing. No more than a TBSP of sugar (if any). Self-rising Aunt Jemima buttermilk Cornmeal, TBSP of flour, either buttermik or plain milk, salt, heat oil in old iron skillet, then pour most into the batter. Put liquidy batter in hot pan, bake on 440° for 20-22 mins. I like my cornbread thin rather than thick.
Mathews is good, but Whole Foods is the best that isn’t home made. You can get a bowl of soup and a hunk of cornbread to go, and that makes a fabulous meal.
The best cornbread is made in White Georgia at my house.
My husband made a video of me making cornbread and sent it to all his friends and family. But what would I know I am just a good old Georgia girl from hot Atlanta. I never eat restaurants cornbread to start with if it ain’t mine, it ain’t good.
Craig Weaver – your recipe made me ill just reading it. It’s people like you that have ruined the name of cornbread. Cake mix is for CAKES and sugar should be nowhere NEAR cornbread. I seriously hope that was a joke recipe.
Mommy Francis in Vickery Village in Cumming……
Outstanding cornbread that they serve complimentary to every table that comes in. Kids eat free here in July although it’s a great value anytime………………..turkey and dressing all year long, yummo!
The Quonset Hut place in Dillard/Mountain City (hard to tell when you leave one and get to the other) – we stop there on the way home from Highlands every time. Luscious Lady Peas, sweet Corn, actually dark green Pole Beans (the “green beans” around Atlanta are more of a grayish-green), tender Okra that fries up perfectly, the biggest, most beautiful heads of Cabbage you’d ever see (pretty enough to photograph and frame), tomatoes that don’t taste at all like the pretenders the grocery stores carry. We get bags of stuff, bring back for friends as well.
The Morningside Farmers’ Market, every Saturday morning, picked by farmers the day before and all organic. On North Highland Ave. in Morningside neighborhood.
Dekalb Farmers Market. Although if you head up to Elijay, stop at R & J Orchard (or maybe it’s R&G). It’s on the right hand side of the road just before you get into town. AWESOME!!
R&R Produce, smack in the middle of 5 Points (next to the Andrew Young GSU building). The employees are friendly, try to get to know each customer personally, and have great prices. Great customer service and great produce.
P&W Produce on Beaver Ruin in Lilburn. Their tomatoes are always good and they have a great selection of fresh produce as well. They have been in business for years so they must be doing something right!
Truly Living Well Natural Urban Farms on Washington Road in East Point. Everything is organic and grown with soul. The best locally grown vegetables year-round; the best selection of organic herbs anywhere in Atlanta. A community gathering place on CSA pickup and market day (Wednesday), and great place to visit with your kids any time.
The Osage Farms in Raburn Gap, GA., located at 5030 Highway 441 North.
We stopped by there on our way back home from Highlands, NC. We “loaded up” on corn, peas, green beans, tomatoes, potatoes, watermelon, cantalope, onions, cukes, squash, peaches, blackberries, and much more. All items are locally grown and harvested beginning July 1st.
It’s the best anywhere!
I agree with Cliff. Osage Farms has the freshest and best produce anywhere. Wait until you’re there while a farmer is unloading freshly picked Silver Queen corn, still warm from the sun.
Easy! Burger’s Farmer Market in Marietta — it’s where all the little old ladies in Marietta shop for their Southern-style veggies. Alton Brown also said it’s one of his favorite places for produce.
Sherry’s Produce on Lawrenceville Highway in Tucker. The tomatoes are always wonderful and they have a nice selection of fresh shelled peas and beans (my personal summertime favorites). The unblemished okra and squash are to die for and don’t get me started on the small cucumbers! Plus the prices are the very reasonable compared to some other vegetable markets. Think I’ll stop on my way home from work and then make some of my delicious iron skillet cornbread to go with it. Yum yum!
Well, I love Dekalb Farmers Market…it has a lot of cool stuff, a great variety of international foods. But, for locally grown fresh produce it’s not the best.
I like roadside stands and The Mercantile (on Dekalb Ave) for fresh and locally grown. Though The Mercantile doesn’t have a huge supply or variety and it’s expensive…however they do have the best baguettes in town (better than Alons).
I’m reticent to let the rest of the city know about the great treasure we in Fayette County have in Adams Farm. We don’t need any more traffic and you have to shop early in the day already as they may run out of a choice item until the next day’s picking comes in. Monday-Saturday sale of fresh produce, grown right there on-site. Family-owned and staffed, I can’t imagine a better place to get high-quality, fresh, delicious vegetables. Their tomatoes are just starting to come in —ripe and consistent, and their butter beans and pink-eyed peas are incredible.
Sherry’s Produce in Tucker. The nicest people, great prices and the produce is wonderful. You can run across the street to Wilke’s Meat Market and completely skip a trip to the grocery store.
Love the Country Store on Tara Blvd. at Tara Rd. Can’t beat the garden grown tomatoes, peaches, cantaloupes and they always have sweet watermelons at a good price. I go there several times a week…it;s like having my own garden without all the work.
I LOVE LUCY’S MARKET! This family run business, located on Roswell Road 1 block south of Wieuca Rd.) offers the best in fresh produce, friendly service from Kim, Hope, Richard & son, and wonderful prices. Their tomatoes are the best in town and their fine selection of green beans, cantalopes, watermelons, okra, squash, cucumbers, corn (bought daily at the farmer’s market), and fresh cut herbs would have made their grandmother, Lucy, proud.
They have my bet for best produce in town, but they also sell and deliever firewood and pinestraw, and their boiled peanuts are to die for.
Osage in Rabun Gap. Worth the short drive from Atlanta. The produce is still damp from the morning dew where it was picked from the fields and the BBQ, avaialble only on weekends, is some of the best around. Great local breads, jams and jellies too.
Best place to get produce is at State Farmers Market and to be especific La Merced Produce. The have the best Mexican produce in the whole state. The best Mexican avocados, the best roma tomatoes and the hottest peppers! Definitely a trip worth your time and money.
Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market at St. Phillips Cathedral parking lot. Has parking, shade, fresh coffee, meat, sweet potato pies, plants for sale, and other unusual items. Also often includes various artists’ and photographers’ work.
Whole Foods and Fresh Market now carry the BEST Georgia Peach I have ever had–the Ga Fuzzy grown by Pearson Farm–anything with the Pearson Farm sticker is absolutely amazing!!!
Any of the true producer markets around the state – Peachtree Road, Morningside, East Atlanta Village, Norcross, and Decatur all have fabulous produce grown by our own farmers!
Thanks to everyone for pointing out some of the less well-known places that might get overlooked. I’ve found a few new places to check out.
Regarding Dekalb Farmers Market – it’s a fun place to shop, and they have a lot of interesting stuff, but I’ve never found the quality of their produce to be as good as I would hope. It’s reliable, and they have almost anything you might want, but the quality doesn’t compare to what you would find at a market where farmers are selling their own hand-picked produce.
I get wonderful farm fresh produce from Moore Farms and Friends CSA and they are delivered to me every week at East Atlanta Ace Hardware (one of many delivery areas). CSAs not only bring you fresh produce but also support local farmers! Check them out on line http://www.moorefarmsandfriends.com. Also, the East Atlanta Farmers Market is every Thursday afternoon in the Ace Hardware parking lot. Lots of fresh produce, baked goods, honey, etc. Check it out also. Buy and eat local!
Fairburn Farmers Market every Saturday , May through October at the train station on West Broad Street/Hwy 29 in Fairburn , Ga
Also Scharko Farms in Fairburn they are also at the Farmers Market but sometimes they open their little farm stand on Pine St in Fairburn. Off East Campbellton Rd.
Another voice to say that the Dekalb Farmer’s Market is very overrated. In terms of the breads and meats they’re wonderful but the tired produce and less than stellar varieties are not impressive.
Go up Buford Highway to places like the BFM where the choices are a better buy in terms of quality, freshness and price. Seriously, five types of chives? Six types of zucchini?
While you’re in Tucker, stop in Matthew’s Cafeteria for their fabulous fried chicken, vegetables and cornbread. You can also pick up a couple home grown tomatoes (usually in a box near the front) to take home for your tomato sandwich. No – I don’t work for Matthew’s! I’m just a big fan of good, simple food.
[...] serve up my picks for the best cornbread (and its close relatives). Vote for your favorites in the AJC’s Best of the Big A cornbread search through the weekend; winners will be posted on [...]
My favorite local spot has to be Sherry’s Produce in Tucker. The vegetables are always fresh, the people that work there could not be any nicer if they were family, the prices are quite reasonable and their fresh shelled pink-eye peas are divine.
There’s a farm up here in Forsyth County that has a self service produce stand. Take what you need, look at the price list, and put the money in the shoebox. Freshest stuff around. Especially if you step in the field and pick your own, then pay for it:-)
My vote goes to Brunswick Zone on the corner of Spaulding and Holcomb Bridge Rd in Norcross. During the week, you can bowl for only 99 cents per game. The staff and bartenders are the best and are quick to recognize you after only a few visits.
I prefer any Brunswick bowling center. I particularly like US Play in Kennesaw because they have about 30 lanes and if there is a wait there are plenty of arcade games to play. If anyone’s a fan of Brunswick, be sure to joing their mailing list. About once a week I get coupons for discounted bowling. I’ll never go bowling if I don’t have a coupon because it can get really expensive really quick, but the online coupons are usually for $.99 bowling, and it’s good on Friday’s and Saturday’s too.
I like the bowling centers in West Atlanta. I always have a great time there in the late evenings. They have the best ball polishing machines in the city. Lots of spit really helps the shine come out.
US Play Kennesaw. In fact I am having a fundraiser there on August 30th from 1-4 to raise money in honor of my late wife. The proceed will be donated to the Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance. Please come join us. Email me @ bowlingforjee@gmail.com for details.
In the summer and fall I like to drive down to the State Farmer’s Market in East Point. I love to drive thru the stalls especially around Halloween and Thanksgiving. I normally go to Dekalb Farmer’s Market but lately their produce seems sparse.
300 on Savoy is the classiest, as long as they don’t have some stupid hip-hop garbage-fest going on. Midtown is convenient – and open 24/7 – but they are usually horrendously overpriced. Generally the alleys in north Fulton seem to have the least riff raff.
Pinstripes Stockbridge Ga. Great family fun along with food and drinks. Love it that the Waitress comes to the table. Again, I think this spot has great ambience for a family.
On the corner of peachtree and forsyth street you can find a guy named Botswana Phil. He has some of the best grass produce in town. Lots of selection at a low, low price.
AMF in Marietta. My daughter is on 2 leagues. The coaching staff is great and she has come a long way in her bowling. The employees and management are very supportive of the youth league and I am happy to be a part of it.
The bowling alley on Robins Air Force base in Warner Robins, GA can’t be beat since it has $1/game bowling for lunch every weekday. However, I have been impressed with the Stars and Stripes bowling alley out on Highway 316 between Lawrenceville and Dacula.
Definitely NOT the Brunswick lanes off Holcomb Bridge on Old Roswell Road. Management only wants your $$ and could care less if the people bowling around you are inconsiderate idiots. I’ve seen fights there start because mgmt wouldn’t step in first. People have had things stolen from them while they’re bowling and mgmt’s response was, “Eh. Sorry. Have a free shoe rental.”
The best-kept secret in the Atlanta metro area … CHEROKEE LANES in Canton!!!!!! It’s not an over-priced nightclub with extreme prices – it’s a family-friendly atmosphere with great entertainment on Saturday nights and 25 cents a game on Sunday nights! It’s a professional bowlers’-quality place, so the lanes are REALLY taken care of … but mostly it’s the PEOPLE who work there … much better and nicer and friendlier than the minimum-wage-I’ve-never-bowled teenagers at AMF lanes. (www.cherokeelanes.net).
US Play in Kennesaw. Not only do they have tons of stuff to do but they also have special days where they have $1 bowling games. It’s a great place to go that doesnt leave you bankrupt.
Your Dekalb Farmers Market —-they have the coolest exotic fruit ever!! If you can’t get it in Dekalb Farmer’s, you can’t get it at any other market in GA, and that’s a FACT
Your Dekalb Farmers’ Market! Best selection of hard to find international goods. And the quality is awesome. They have a great bakery. And their beef samosas are divine in their cafeteria. Also, unlike other farmer’s market, everytime i go to this one, it’s always a diverse group of people. Always.
Back in the day we used to go bowling in our front lawn. Moma would sweep the yard and daddy would put out ten empty whiskey bottles. Us kids would then tie some squirrels to skateboards and wisk them down the lane to an awaiting strike. That was all befoe this hip hop generation ruined it all. I am tired of seeing parachute pants hearing MC Hammer music whenever I do the the lanes now.
I like the Cartersville Bowling Center lanes…. oh wait… it got closed and torn down so that we could have ANOTHER CVS in town… Someone with some $$$ should come to Cartersville and build some lanes… cause, if you built it… we will come!!!
I can’t tell you the best place, but I CAN TELL YOU THE WORST. The ATLANTA FUN CENTER – The place has gone to hell in a handbasket. My family and I used to go their every friday and saturday night for years, now you could not pay me to set foot in the place… It’s sad that the staff has simply “run off” all of the clients. I would comment on rotten customer service, but they have NO customer service.
My last time their, my wife and I waited 10 minutes in line, then another 15 minutes waiting to be called to play – BUT their were 7 open lanes – not broken – just not being used. During that 25 minutes, I saw EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THE WAITING LIST Leave in frustration. by the way, also during that time, the counter person did not call one name from the waiting list. I still cannot believe it.
Now, I take my family and my $$$$ to Atlanta 300 of 285. Its more expensive, but its worth it.
Do yourself a favor, avoid the fun center. It’s a serious JOKE!!!
Funtime of Buford sets their lanes up better than anyone in the area if you’re a serious bowler. Its not in the best location, but its a really good bowling alley.
I love Midtown Bowl and Ten Pin is just too expensive, probably go there for a birthday and that’s it. Lol @ Wayz for saying “Wii.” Jillians is always at the top of my list as well.
Red Carpet Lanes on Thursdays is the best by far. It puts 300 to shame. Check it out this Thursday night. It’s affordable as well. There much more to do than bowling as well, pool, poker and club rooms.
300 Lanes! Service can be sketchy, but if you get the right lane manager, you’re set. We hosted my son’s b-day party there, and everyone–adults and kids–had a blast. They sell alcohol and really good food!
The worst bowling lane in the ATL area is in Douglasville. The lanes are constantly malfunctioning. The staff is clueless about how to properly maintain the lanes. The only people who hand out in the center are shut-ins. Not much action in the Douglasville bowling center.
Come to the Old Mill in Clarkesville 25cents a game on Tuesdays! Yes, a bit of a drive from 285, but the foothills of Northeast Ga. ain’t too bad. A few pretty good places for lunch in the area as well. I’m only 30 minutes away, so I may be spoiled, and retired!
I wish you would have posted this last week when I was in Tucker, GA. I could not find a good peach pie or cobbler anywhere and we asked everywhere we went. I tried the Pic-a-dilly in Tucker and The Varsity, downtown and neither offered the fresh peachy dessert I was looking forward to. I had hopes for the restaurant at the Forest Park Farmers Market, but they sold their last piece moments before our arrival. I did bring some fresh GA peaches home. The Pecan looks like the place to go. Next time!
Let’s stop extolling the virtues of Georgia peaches. I’ve never tasted a good one. Clearly, better peaches come from South Carolina, California and New Jersey.
You know, telling everyone that you or your neighbor make the best cobbler isn’t interesting or helpful (unless you include the address and invite everyone over for cobbler).
Mine is really good – it’s my Momma’s recipe, but since I can’t invite everybody over for it, I will say Matthew’s in Tucker. There is really good. And to the person who said he/she couldn’t eat a Georgia peach, well, that just leaves more for the rest of us. And, in the years my tree produces, they are the best I have ever had. Nothin’ like home grown
I conquer, Buckner’s has the best peach cobbler. Although, I don’t like the slave artifacts in the restaurant!!!! I think they could at least at a marker that provides info about the artifacts.
Just a little toot of my own horn! I am the owner of Pies by Sweet Sistah and I think my Peach “Dumplin” Cobbler is the best ever! It has a top and bottom crust, juicy with dumplins inside the pie! Anyone can order them fresh frozen or fresh baked: Call 404-219-5571 or email sweetsistah28@bellsouth.net.
Other than mine (a really easy recipe) the best place in town for peach cobbler is Mary Mac’s hands down!! They also have the best fried shrimp. I hate to say it, but I just love cholestrol!
The peach cobbler sold out of the Deli section of my local Ingles is the best I’ve ever had. Second best would have to be at Bilbo’s BBQ in Bremen, GA.
My mom makes the best that I ever tasted and you guys are right about the freshest peaches makes a big difference. You guys are making me miss Matthews though in Tucker…got to make a visit soon.
I love these food blogs, I learn about places I haven’t been to like Sweet Sistah’s. But my favorite cobbler besides mine is like I said above is Buckeners, along with their fab fried chicken and stewed tomatoes and rolls. Matthews has great cobbler and so does His & Her Buffet in Acworth. I am a true foodie and will go almost any distance for the right taste!
Did any of you read Browncoat@9:44. Stop talking about yours the best and Sweet Sistah who many times are you going to plug yours? and for the topic at hand. Blue Willow in Social Circle.
I say Red Carpet Lanes in the brand spanking new Paragon development in Duluth. It’s on Satellite near Beaver Ruin, and they have a restaurant and bar right there.
Worst: Brunswick Roswell: I agree with some other post Roswell is by far the worst place staff is okay, but manager is not up to par compared to other brunswick centers.
Best: Atlanta 300 for fun only, like having a party and Brunswick Norcross for league bowling and Red Carpet Lanes is new but has a good welcome feel to it.
Kay, stop hating. The questions is where to get the best Peach Cobbler. There are several votes for Buckners, Shane’s, Sweet Sistahs and your favorite Blue Willow. You sound like a sour puss. And for the record, I’m not Sweet Sistah. Just a person who hates to see others knock somebody for trying to do their thing.
Midtown Lanes. Ten Pin Alley is full of snobbery and superficiality. It epitomizes the shallow Atlanta attitude that is increasingly making this so-called city unattractive. On top of that it seems the lanes are non-regulation, not long enough and narrower than standard.
Hey all, I am so glad to see that the AJC took interest in bowling as it seems to be the “silent” past-time! I see lots of great comments and so glad that the center we bowl out (Norcross-Brunswick) of had so many great kudos.. I think that says volumes for the management and staff at that center.
If you want to experience what the hype is all about come check out a new Mixed “MONEY” fall league called Mega Evolution League, on Monday Nights at 7pm. (meeting August 17,2009, league starts August 24,2009)
If you are on Facebook, become our fan and view all the upcoming events and exciting details on this league.
I remember one time in Las Vegas I was down to my last $50 and……. oh this is about peach cobbler………..how about Mary Mac’s? Doesn’t anyone eat there anymore????????
Please don’t laugh but Backyard Burgers have some small containers of the sweet Peach as well as Apple, and Blackberry, and Strawberry cobblers depending on which day you visit….
@last Cracker in East Point..Amen to that..The bowling alley in Douglasville is a joke..It’s dirty, the staff are very rude, the lanes suck and most of the people that go there are jerks..Of course if you think the bowling alley is bad, you should never go to the skating rink across from it..It makes the people at the bolwing alley seem like wonderful, nice, friendly people….
I make my peach cobbler with a can of sweetened peaches and instant crust add a little brown sugar butter, vanilla, and cinnamon and my husband is in heaven!! As you can see, I am not a cook, but this works for me. LOL!
Peaches from Georgia, the Empire State of the South, are the best in the world!!!!
South Carolina, California, and New Jersey are just cheap imitations and inferior, just like Pepsi is to CoCo-lah. Quality not quanity is what counts anyway. Anybody who thinks otherwise can kiss my native Georgia Peachstate A$$!!!!
The World’s Largest Peach Cobbler at the Georgia Peach Festival every June in Peach County. The cobbler has its own Web site. Y’all missed it last month. Try to catch up next year.
Buckners in Jackson is by far the best. If there is anyone that says anyone other than Buckners, then they haven’t had Buckners before.
Attention people of Atlanta – Please experience real Georgia food and tradition. You will not find it in Atlanta. You have to travel to find the best.
First off, Buckner’s undercooks their dough. True cobbler has a slight crunchiness too it. Secondly, Buckners uses canned peaches. I love Buckner’s food(specially the yardbird) but the peach cobbler is not that good.
Georgia Peaches are terrible compared to those from Northern California, Oregon, and believe it or not, Illinois. I am a georgia boy through and through but our peaches SUCK!!! This redclay is just not good for Peaches.
Best peach cobbler is from Gladys Knights Chicken and Waffles.
Try the Little Barn in Lawrenceville, their cobbler is the best!! They have the best BBQ and stew and the breakfast biscuits are the best (better than mom’s!) and that’s saying a lot!
“Let’s stop extolling the virtues of Georgia peaches. I’ve never tasted a good one. Clearly, better peaches come from South Carolina, California and New Jersey.”
It’s hard to find Georgia Elberta peaches in supermarkets because most are “contract” peaches, bought by large food companies several seasons before they are even grown. That’s how good they are. Most supermarkets only get culls, because they can’t compete with the contract buyers. Peaches at Publix aren’t the real things. Want to find the best examples of Georgia peaches–go to the state farmer’s market. Some manage to make it to market.
Could we PLEASE refrain from the “my kitchen! mine! my momma’s!” comments. Seriously, we get it. I cannot stand having to scroll through the comments to get to real suggestions. Your cobbler’s fantastic. We get it.
This spot may not be in Atlanta, but, without a doubt, JOSEPHINE’S AUTHENTIC SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT, in Tampa, FL, has the very best Peach AND Apple Cobbler on the face of the earth! You don’t have to believe me, just try them for yourself if you are ever in Tampa. You WILL NOT be disappointed!
I think the worst managed bowling center is Brunswick Zone Roswell.. The staff is extremely friendly but the manager is a complete money hogging idiot.
Let’s not forget the Varsity’s home-made apple and peach pies that have been a local favorite for 75+ years. At the North Avenue location, where they’re made each day they are even better if that’s possible…then add a hand scoop of any type of the many flavors of real ice cream they offer and you have a true Atlanta delight.
Not only should folks stop telling us about the best being in their kitchen or their mama’s kitchen; please stop naming restaurants outside of GA. If you want to recommend some restaurant in another state then do us all a favor and blog on that city/state’s local newspaper. We are looking “real” restaurants or bakeries in metro Atlanta specifically where “real” folks in metro Atlanta can go try the food of the moment. So for the best peach cobbler in the METRO ATL go to the Green Manor in Union City.
peach quality varies as do the grapes that are used in wine, so stop gripin’ about peaches. Second, the Varsity peach pies are not cobbler, and if they would actually fill them, they would taste better, and as I always post , please CHANGE THE STALE GREASE – YOUR FRIED FOOD IS AWFUL.
Finally, the Backyard Burger has excellent cobbler.
The problem with most, if not all of the restaurants that serve any kind of fruit pie or cobbler is that they use canned fruit. Is there any restaurant that actually maked FRESH peach cobbler during the summer months?

It’s $5 a car load to watch them from the park but you can watch them for free in the Piggly Wiggly Parking lot or places close to the Park. In the park before the fireworks they have live music, bouncy houses for the kids, concessions, etc. It’s good family fun.

Anything with Bagel in the name is obviously omitted – we are in the south. It should be biscuit centric. If Hardees was full service breakfast their biscuits would not taste so good, so it must be The Hickory House, the big brother to JR’s Log House. The Waffle House certainly ranks top 3.

If you’re in Atlanta and have internet service, ZAPPO’S has good deals and good selection, free shipping also. Of course you can also search/ order from ZAPPO’S from anywhere but that’s not what this survey is about. Atlanta is the location we’re supposed to reference.

Delicious!

Yum….

When I want to get fat, it’s got to be flat!

I actually had my cornbread recipe published in the AJC Food Section around 25 years ago. Aside from mine, I REALLY like Matthew’s.

It’s the best anywhere!

I prefer any Brunswick bowling center. I particularly like US Play in Kennesaw because they have about 30 lanes and if there is a wait there are plenty of arcade games to play. If anyone’s a fan of Brunswick, be sure to joing their mailing list. About once a week I get coupons for discounted bowling. I’ll never go bowling if I don’t have a coupon because it can get really expensive really quick, but the online coupons are usually for $.99 bowling, and it’s good on Friday’s and Saturday’s too.

It’s not an over-priced nightclub with extreme prices – it’s a family-friendly atmosphere with great entertainment on Saturday nights and 25 cents a game on Sunday nights!

Next time!
