KirbyG’s Diner and Pub (formerly Chevy’s Diner) in McDonough was the readers’ pick for best burger in and around Atlanta. It might be a surprise winner for those unfamiliar with it, but this restaurant’s fans are passionate about the Henry County spot.
YOUR PICKS
1. KirbyG’s Diner and Pub
You say, “KirbyG’s (used to be Chevy’s) in McDonough. Big and juicy burgers on a toasted and buttered bun – Delicious! Vortex used to be my favorite, so Vortex-lovers don’t knock KirbyG’s (because of all the nominations it’s getting) until you’ve tried it. It’s worth the trip” and “By the way no shilling here. Just a lot of locals that LOVE to eat at KirbyG’s…..Do not say bad things unless you have tried it!!! Love the Ole Blue Eyes. I do not have to drive into downtown traffic to get an awesome burger.”

Sometimes the simple pleasures are the best. That’s what you’ll get with Bocado’s classic burger, elevated by the finest ingredients. It’s our critic’s pick for best burger in and around Atlanta. Photo: Becky Stein / Special
OUR PICKS
1. Bocado
The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “Chef Todd Ginsberg’s burger at Bocado, a double stack of house-ground farm-raised beef, American cheese and house-made pickles served on an H&F bun, stands out amongst the many contenders for Atlanta’s best burger. Ginsberg’s simple preparation and attention to quality ingredients makes this the strongest offering of its kind in town.”

It’s a toss up between Loco’s (Buckhead) Philly Burger – the grilled onions and peppers are just done enough. The meat is juicy and cooked just enough and the bun is lightly toasted. All of that topped with a slice of provolone cheese. It’s been a while since I have been to The Brickery in Sandy Springs but they used to have a Caesar burger that was out of this world. Again – meat cooked just enough with a toasted bun. Then add shredded lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese and a ladle of Caesar dressing. It is messy but delicious!

Where do you start?!? I was glad to see Lucky’s get a mention. The food is really good and I can take my whole crew! The ladies in my family really like the Grindhouse because of the Turkey Burger; I like the grindhouse double. Farmburger, either location, Decatur or Buckhead; great burger, great sauce. No one beats the fries at 5 Guys; and theirs is the best “fast” burger. Local 7 in Tucker is pretty good for a new place.

I guess it all depends on what you are looking for. There was a time that I loved Moe’s and Joe’s (usually hungover on Sundays) or the Highland Tap (when dark smokey bars were cool), but I have moved on from them. For a chain, I think Ted’s does a good job and has a fun selection of options, but it is not the best burger or burger joint in town. For newcomers, I like Moxie Burger. Not over the top, not to big, just a good ole burger. As far as old school goes, the Vortex is hard to beat

If anyone remembers Carey’s, their burgers were untouchable. The spot on U.S. 41 was a bit questionable with regard to their racial ethics, but there was a second location off of Collier Road that was very respectable. Haven’t had a better burger since they closed over 15 years ago.

Cheeseburger Bobby’s in Canton on Hwy 20. Great Burger, Quarter pound or 1/2 pound – dress it like you want from a topping bar. Fresh Cut Fries – and as a perfect ending Frozen Custard, so creamy and wonderful. This company is also very involved in community, so on any given night they are probably going to be having specials and part of their proceeds to go a local school or charity, which is great too. Very Friendly Staff.
Another good spot is new in Woodstock – The Burger Bar – you can get anything from 1/4 pound to a whooping 2 lb., you have an order sheet that has about 50 toppings you can choose, including goat cheese, eggs and even peanut butter if you desire. They also have chicken, turkey burgers and other sandwiches and salads.

Flip Burger has amazing stuff.
But when I want something really special, I get the “Mishma Burger” at Farm Burger. It’s a Veggie Burger, topped with Bacon, Paprika Mayo, Pepper Jack Cheese, Pickled Jalapenos, Salsa Verde, FB sauce on the side and (optional) Lettuce and Tomato. Try to get it at peak hours ’cause that’s when they make the best bacon.

Vortex is good but the waitresses are so stoned it takes for ever. Fatburger is greasy. Hardees serves livers, hearts, and lungs as burgers.
Plus most servers are just too worthless to tip.
Just stay home. Dont forget. Arthur Blank has to have a new stadium so taxes are going up to pamper him. You will be lucky to afford McDonalds.

Lots of great mentions here. I’d have to go with Grindhouse, the one at Sweet Auburn Curb Market, which is owned and managed by a different crew than the one on Piedmont. I can’t believe anyone who lives inside the Perimeter would pick the Vortex – it’s a tourist trap. Their burgers are the same frozen ones that you would find in any other basic bar in Atlanta.

Farm Burger (City of Decatur)
You asked why. I pick Farm Burger because this Athens-based farm-to-table burger is ground from grass-fed cows, dry-aged and delivered fresh daily right from the farm.
How I like it? Vanilla. I pick a few toppings from the “Free” part of the Farm Burger menu – crisp lettuce, real tomatoes, red onions sliced thin, with a little paprika or Duke’s mayonnaise… Mm…MM!
Result: a real hamburger, tasting just like a hamburger tasted when I was a kid. Juicy, with an excellent meaty flavor at a reasonable price.

I have lost 50 pounds in the last year on Weight Watchers. I weigh in and attend meetings every Friday AM. My treat to myself on Saturday is to eat the best hamburger in GA or any other place. You can get this fantastic burger at Kirby G’s in McDonough right off the square. Just ask some of the film crew of Tyler Perry’s Christmas movie just filmed in Henry County and especially on the McDonough Square!!!!!!!!!

KirbyG’s (used to be Chevy’s) in McDonough. Big and juicy burgers on a toasted and buttered bun – Delicious! Vortex used to be my favorite, so Vortex-lovers don’t knock KirbyG’s (because of all the nominations it’s getting) until you’ve tried it. It’s worth the trip.

There is no greater pleasure than dining at Teds Montana Grill and devouring any one of thier Bison burgers. Everything fresh everytime and a great feeling of satisfaction with all the delicious toppings they offer. Add the incredible service you receive and you would have to ask yourself why you would go anywhere else.
