The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “Open only for lunch, you will always find this small diner-style hot dog shop in Marietta packed to the brim with regulars, and for good reason. Their spicy chili dogs are the epitome of a Georgia-style hot dog, and the best that I’ve had in the city.”

JCT Bar, the summer previous to this past had Wiener Wednesday – it was awesome, cheap, and ever changing. It wasn’t however the grease bomb stomach grenade that is The Varsity that many crave when intoxicated, and in need of that style. You really have to compare apples to apples in this situation, and define a category like – quick lunch, where it would come from a truck, or a place like Ringside, or fancied up dog such as the Holeman & Finch ballpark style.

While like most lifelong Atlantans I’ll always have a special place in my heart for the Varsity. However, the best I’ve had was at a place in Marietta I think it was called Barker’s.

Barker’s Red Hots (http://www.barkersredhots.com/) on Windy Hill is easily the best dog in town. They use a family owned meat packing company in Buffalo called Sahlen’s for their hot dogs and they grill them over coals for that outdoor grilled flavor… not dirty water hotdogs here! They have that distinctive char-grilled pop. Their fries are great and so is the hot sauce. Best of all, they’ll sell you packs of hot dogs, sauce, and their special mustard so you can repeat the process at home.
Great dogs – great people! Not the fastest on the planet (because they cook to order) so get their early for lunch. Well worth the wait!

Surprised people don’t know anything about hot dogs other than the obvious like the varsity. Barkers are very bland dogs. Brandi’s or Chicago Dog in Marietta, All American Dog on ChamTucker Rd, Diggity Dog truck, Woody’s

The best dogs in the world were at the Athens downtown Varsity when I was there in the early 1950’s. That chili dog walking was something else!!!

Barker Red Hots are really great. You’re lucky if you can catch them when they are actually open though. They have more days off than any place I have ever seen and they close early.
HD1 is also really great.

I hate to say it, but Costco. Other places have more/better toppings and sides for sure, but if you’re asking about the best tasting, highest quality, sausage, it’s definitely Costco. Barker’s wins if you’re giving credit for toppings and sides.

Ahhh…I vote for the Hot Dog Factory in Smyrna!! A cute little eat-in place with unique decor and a variety of specialized hot dogs that are out of this world!! BBQ hot dog with cheese grilled onions and grilled pineapple? I never could have even imagined the combination, but it will forever now stay in my memory. All I can say is YUM.

The Albert in Inman Park has the absolute best dog I’ve had in Atlanta. Order the “Albert Dog” it is 100% all beef with pulled pork bbq and homemade slaw and bbq sauce. It is by far the best. Tia and Heath run an excellent bar/restaurant. It rocks!

If we are just talking about the dog, any place that serves Vienna Beef wieners are about the best you’ll find around here. If we’re talking about the whole package, then Brandi’s in Marietta (and Cartersville) has the best chili dog (sorry Varsity). I’m also partial to Nu-Way, but they aren’t in Atlanta – just Macon.
