YOUR PICKS

You say, “Being from Chicago, I am used to gyros that are packed so high with meat that you have to eat half the meat before you can make a sandwich out of it, and Christos does it just like that. I honestly think Christos has even better gyros than the ones I used to get when I lived up north.” and “Wonderful, mouthwatering meat and the best dressing you will ever have. Yummo!”

OUR PICKS
1. Cafe Agora
The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “Cafe Agroa, with its friendly and eccentric owner, consistently serves up my favorite gyro in town. While the prices seem to change depending on the day of the week, a trip to Buckhead for one of these no-fuss, classic gyros is certainly worth it.”

Nick’s to Go on MLK. Great Gyro, but he is a not a nice person. I seriously saw him tell this lady once to go wait outside because she asked on the status of her order. He said “if you want it fast, go to McDonalds…get out!!!”

I love Nick’s To Go on MLK but have to stand up for Christo’s now on Powers Ferry. The meat is better than any other in Atlanta and my understanding is that there are only a few choices in Chicago from which to get it. And you have to love Athens in Decatur where I first learned of the mysteries of gyros. Opa!

Christo’s is closed. He did make a great Gyro – not sure if it’s on the menu at his new place.

Nick’s is pretty good, too.

Nick’s Grecian Gyro in Hapeville. No contest. Been eating Nick’s gyros for decades. My dad used to bring it home before he retired and I’ve been bringing it home to my kids since I went to work at the airport 15 years ago.

Two places immediately pop to mind…Grecian Gyro in Tucker is always good. However Fresh 4 U Mediterranean Cafe directly across the street from Piedmont Hospital is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. I really cannot say enough for this little spot with always freshly prepared Mediterranean cusine and an awesome gyro sandwich. My wife delivered both our almost 3 yo duaghter and 1 yo son at Piedmont and this place was highly recommended by the nurses both times (I had two gyros in the same day from there after the birth of my daughter).

Nik’s Place, on Whitlock Avenue just off of the Square in Marietta. It’s really, really good.

I miss the old Shipfeifer’s on Peachtree, too, which used to be located between R. Thomas and Huey’s. Cottage fries with feta… MMmmmmmmmm….
