Best doughnuts

ggDine0212Dutch Monkey Doughnuts in Cumming was your pick for best doughnuts in and around Atlanta. Photo: Becky Stein / Special

YOUR PICKS
1. Dutch Monkey
You say, “I drive 30 min every Saturday for their AMAZING treats! My 4 year old loves to watch the donuts being made while I order our breakfast” and “The best doughnuts and great for our community! Keylime pie doughnuts, blueberry cake doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, strawberry bars, lemon meringue, boston cream pie… all awesome!”

2. Krispy Kreme
3. Sublime
4. Dough in the Box
5. Revolution

DONUT 2Who can resist that circle of glazed goodness? The Krispy Kreme doughnut is among our picks for best doughnut in and around Atlanta. Staff photo.

OUR PICKS
We’re doing something a little different with this week’s topic. Since we all had different takes on the best doughnut, we thought we’d offer up four different choices.
Krispy Kreme
Chief Dining Critic John Kessler says, “While I appreciate the care and artistry of the doughnuts prepared by small, local bakeries, the only doughnut I truly crave is hot now: Krispy Kreme.”

Dough in the Box
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “I’ve tried all the doughnuts in town and Dough in the Box remains my favorite. The shop’s yeast dough contains no sugar and is fried in soybean oil, resulting in a doughnut with a big yeasty flavor without the cloying sweetness. The light and exceedingly tender doughnuts come in traditional flavors, with old-fashioned sour cream, apple fritters and simple glazed among the top sellers.”
doughnuts.0312

Sublime Doughnuts
The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “The grandaddy of gourmet donuts in Atlanta, Sublime Doughnuts (in the photo on the left) in Atlanta remains my go-to for the best doughnuts in town. For my money, it is tough to beat the Fresh Strawberries and Cream or Maple Bacon Cheddar.”

German Cafe and Bakery
Keeper of Best of the Big A Shane Harrison says, “I find myself drawn again and again to the simple, bronzed perfection of the apple fritters at the German Cafe and Bakery in Decatur. These heavenly nuggets have a crisp exterior that doesn’t wilt under the sweet glaze and a doughy interior with just the right amount of chew.”

Sublime. Not an average one in the bunch. They are all spectaculat. With that said- the four seasons restaurant has some that are pretty good. Certainly not Sublime calibre but better than the local chains. There’s also a place in Henry County that was pretty good-never went there as my colleague always broght them in the office. But Sublime- that’s worth a special trip -and I live in Hall County.

I hate to even share my pick, but since others have, I have to say Revolution. Their vanilla bean is what a real donut is supposed to taste like. Not a piece of fried air that disappears with one bite – these are chewy, stretchy, floral-vanilla scented rings from heaven. The caramel bacon is so good that each time I’ve had one I’ve seriously almost cried from joy. The Nutella cream is, well, there are no words. I brought them to work once and all who partook agreed that these were the best donuts they had ever tasted. You have to just try them. You will thank me. But PLEASE leave some for me!!!!

Have tried others, but Sara Donuts on Medlock THE best! They are always fresh and more flavor…not like eating a yeast roll with topping on it.

If you didn’t list Dutch Monkey Donuts….well then, I’m sad for you because you are missing out on the very BEST donuts, not only in the state of Georgia, but the best donuts in the world!!! Dutch monkey makes the most “sublime” donuts that are truly “revolutionary” so stop wasting your $$ at those other donut shops and go to Dutch monkey! :)

Hands down, it’s…BEST COUNTRY DONUTS in Forest Park!!! Not at all fancy…Just a tiny little throwback of a place (authentically retro little building)…Mom and Pop-style, shop, but truly the best old fashioned donuts in this entire world…unbeliveably fresh and moist. The blueberry cake and the cherry cake are to die for…and they freeze beautifully (in case you want to buy an extra dozen!)…Worth the drive and calories! : )

While Revolution doughnuts are good and I like what they are doing, if we are talking about the best….DUTCH MONKEY DOUGHNUTS is it! Prepared fresh from scratch daily, these are culinary masterpieces, not just some sugar laden breakfast item. If it’s a bacon wrapped, house-made jelly filled, fresh berry topped or simply chocolate sour-cream cake, Dutch Monkey is the place to be. The trip OTP is worth it!

Dutch Monkey in Cumming – END OF STORY by a very satisfied customer! Just imagine reals strawberries in the strawberry bars and real coffee in the Coffee Bismarks? Not only do they have the freshest and most delicious doughtnuts, their coffee blows all the other coffee beans out of the water – oh and did I mention the Take and Bake Cinnamon Rolls? And so I repeat – END OF STORY!

Dutch Monkey in Cumming wins my vote as the best. These are not your average doughnuts. They are made by esteemed chefs that worked at some of the top restaurants in the country. They are scratch fresh daily, use no preservatives and use a lot of local ingredients (in season) when available. Really, of all the places in Atlanta to eat, it is SUCH a treat to go there :) Even the basic donuts there are the best I’ve ever tasted.

Dutch Monkey in Cumming wins the gold, silver, and bronze, followed very closely by Sara’s, and then everyone else ties for 5th. Their Maple Bacon, Salted Caramel bars, and signature Dutch Monkey are probably my three favorites, but I think I need to try all of them again at least five more times before jumping to any conclusions :-)

Dutch Monkey is fabulous. Their blueberry is probably the best I have ever had. They take donuts up a level, and stock the best tasting root beer. It is just off exit 13 up GA 400.

Revolution Doughnuts (on College Ave, Decatur)…their salted caramel cake doughnuts and figgy creme filled sliders are heavenly. I love that they use organic and local ingredients, and that there is something new every day. Absolute genius! This place easily rivals Chicago’s famed Doughnut Vault.

You do know they filter for duplicate IP addresses, so whomever is bombing the list with the dutch monkey nominations is just wasting their time. Your votes won’t count. Seriously? Must be a sucky place if they have to resort to such low-life tactics. Big turn off.
