Best doughnuts

YOUR PICKS
1. Dutch Monkey
You say, “I drive 30 min every Saturday for their AMAZING treats! My 4 year old loves to watch the donuts being made while I order our breakfast” and “The best doughnuts and great for our community! Keylime pie doughnuts, blueberry cake doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, strawberry bars, lemon meringue, boston cream pie… all awesome!”

2. Krispy Kreme
3. Sublime
4. Dough in the Box
5. Revolution

DONUT 2Who can resist that circle of glazed goodness? The Krispy Kreme doughnut is among our picks for best doughnut in and around Atlanta. Staff photo.

OUR PICKS
We’re doing something a little different with this week’s topic. Since we all had different takes on the best doughnut, we thought we’d offer up four different choices.
Krispy Kreme
Chief Dining Critic John Kessler says, “While I appreciate the care and artistry of the doughnuts prepared by small, local bakeries, the only doughnut I truly crave is hot now: Krispy Kreme.”

Dough in the Box
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “I’ve tried all the doughnuts in town and Dough in the Box remains my favorite. The shop’s yeast dough contains no sugar and is fried in soybean oil, resulting in a doughnut with a big yeasty flavor without the cloying sweetness. The light and exceedingly tender doughnuts come in traditional flavors, with old-fashioned sour cream, apple fritters and simple glazed among the top sellers.”

Sublime Doughnuts
The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “The grandaddy of gourmet donuts in Atlanta, Sublime Doughnuts (in the photo on the left) in Atlanta remains my go-to for the best doughnuts in town. For my money, it is tough to beat the Fresh Strawberries and Cream or Maple Bacon Cheddar.”

German Cafe and Bakery
Keeper of Best of the Big A Shane Harrison says, “I find myself drawn again and again to the simple, bronzed perfection of the apple fritters at the German Cafe and Bakery in Decatur. These heavenly nuggets have a crisp exterior that doesn’t wilt under the sweet glaze and a doughy interior with just the right amount of chew.”

Krispy Kreme when the hot donuts light is on. Like eating warm, sugared air. Too bad they have more calories than air. Best coffee with donuts OTOH is Dunkin Donuts coffee.

You might think this is a joke, but the bakery at Ingles has the best donuts I have ever had. Double Chocolte glazed and cinnamon. Try it and you will see. Old School donuts.

Sara’s Donuts off Medlock Bridge in Duluth makes the best donuts. I’ve been to those other places and will give them props on creativity but the donuts here are second to none. The yeast donut holes practically float of the table they are so light and the old fashioned buttermilk is coffee’s perfect pairing. Yum, I think I’ll be stopping there tomorrow morning.

I’ve had Sara’s and Dutch Monkey. I’d have to go with Sara’s for flavor while DM had some interesting options. Still need to try Sublime to see if they can release me from my Krispy Kreme addiction.

I hate to even share my pick, but since others have, I have to say Revolution. Their vanilla bean is what a real donut is supposed to taste like. Not a piece of fried air that disappears with one bite – these are chewy, stretchy, floral-vanilla scented rings from heaven. The caramel bacon is so good that each time I’ve had one I’ve seriously almost cried from joy. The Nutella cream is, well, there are no words. I brought them to work once and all who partook agreed that these were the best donuts they had ever tasted. You have to just try them. You will thank me. But PLEASE leave some for me!!!!
