You say, “Bell Street Burritos is by a wide margin the best burrito joint, either in Mid or Downtown. The Pork and Green Chili burrito is my favorite and I usually can’t break from it. As mentioned the tamales are dynamite as well. The tomatillo salsa is a wonderful addition to any item on the menu. The fellows are always adding new items (lemonade, tamales, and milk shakes so far) but I can’t help but get that Pork and Green Chili, mmmmmm. Oh, and a mexican Coke to wash it down.”

The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “Amid the explosion of burrito chains in Atlanta that began over a decade ago, Bell St. Burritos is one of the few local upstarts that stands out against the Moe’s and Chipotles of the world. Beginners should go straight for the pork and green chile grilled burrito.”

Mia’s or Herrera’s. Or Ojeda’s. Oh, wait. Those are in Dallas. Atlanta doesn’t have any mexican restaurants, good or bad. And before name the ONE restaurant in town you think is authentic mexican food (Nuevo Laredo) realize that one restaurant does not a contest make. And Nuevo Laredo is average, at best.
While living in Atlanta, I dreamed of carne asada, plantanos, enchiladas, ceviche, huevos, sopapillas. Oh, the agony of missing good mexican food. How can a city the size of Atlanta have only 1 mexican restaurant and so many places that serve grits.
Oh, and Avila’s, Javier’s, Gloria’s, Cyclone Anaya’s, Mi Cocina, Pepe & Mito’s. Oops, those are in Dallas too.. Come on down, the mexican food’s fantastico.

Count-Schemula,
Have you tried Bell St. Burritos? The owner, like myself (and you apparently) was a die hard Tortillas fan. He set out to recreate the Tortillas burrito experience and he achieved that–even improving on it in my opinion. Go there and get your favorite Tortillas burrito. The beans are spot on as is the green salsa!

I enjoy Bell Street. I walk to the Auburn location occasionally. They are good, but it seems like Tortillas grilled and char blackened the chicken up a little bit and I could have swore the Tortillas green sauce was hotter. Bell seems like roasted chicken and the green sauce is milder. I had a discussion with the owner about it, and he swears he has the green sauce down, while I remember it being more like the current green sauce at El Myr. Bell does have the beans spot on though.

You are certainly right about Tortillas grilling vs. stewing their meat. I prefer the stewed method as it mixes up with everything else a little better, but I can also appreciate your preferring the grilled chicken. Most times, I get the green chili burrito without meat, anyhow. Not sure about Tortillas having hotter green salsa, but maybe. Flavor-wise, like the beans, it seems right-on Tortillas.

The other thing about Tortillas. You had to call in your order to go and give them about an hour to make it before going to pick it up. Going there was only if you had a couple of hours to kill. Those art school kids had no sense of time, lol.

Bell Street Burrito on Howell Mill blows the competition away for me and my wife.. We were die hard Tortillas fans before they went under years ago. You can’t get roasted green chiles anywhere else I don’t think. Kevin is on the money, they nailed Tortillas. We have dragged all our friends there and have been at least a dozen times since they opened.
Roasted green chili/pork burrito is the best. Grilled Broccoli and roasted potato is great also. Beans are always perfect. Chips and guac are very fresh, a bit chunky and homemade. We think the red and green sauce are spot on from Tortillas. The wife gets grilled shrimp/grilled broccoli soft tacos and thinks they are the best. They have no liquor license and you can bring your own brew/wine(Howell Mill location anyway)
The owner ,Matt, is very nice. He will come out and visit the tables and ask how we like everything and chat for a bit. The Howell Mill location lost their lease to Advance Auto and are getting pushed out Aug 31st I think. I have heard whispers that the are considering opening up TWO more locations. We were die hard Willys fans until Bell Street opened. We are hoping the new location will be within a few miles of where the Howell Mill store was.

If you want a real burrito, not a fancy ‘fast casual’ one for gringos, there is only one place – Zestos / Burrito Brothers on Piedmont at Lindbergh. Burrito Grande (Monday special) is awesome, but the Burrito Pescado (Friday special) with talapia is out of this world.

Oh, J, my a$$ is back in Texas, where it belongs. I enjoyed my time in Atlanta, just not the dearth of mex food. But I will admit to enjoying Taqueria Del Sol, if one could make it past the line and weird hours. A nice combo of TexMex and SW style. But Moe’s? That place is nasty. And I do not believe anyone in Atlanta knows the difference between Latin-Am, TexMex, or SW style burritos. Sorry….

Good to finally get this topic started, yes there are a shortage of REAL mexican food places. I haven’t tried Bell Street but this article got me thinking about it.
While I’m at it EL TACO VELOZ — That’s up Buford, just south of 285 — looks like a hole in the wall, matter of fact, it IS a hole in the wall but their burritos are fantastic. I haven’t found a single other place that makes their carne asada as tasteful and rich as they do. Get it with everything (and that’s only cilantro, onion and salsa verde) and it’s fantastic!! Plus it’s cheap compared to a lot of other places in town.
I can’t stress it enough — if you like authentic, give this place a try at least once!!
