Weekend best bets: Aug. 10-12

FRIDAY
Stage: Aurora Theatre in Lawrenceville offers a fresh take on “Sweet Charity,” the classic musical best known for the songs “Big Spender” and “If My Friends Could See Me Now.” It runs through  Sept. 2.

Stage: Serenbe Playhouse’s premieres the musical “Time Between Us,” a tale of two best friends attempting to balance professional success and personal fulfillment across 30 years. The show continues through Aug. 18.

Stage: “The Adventures of High John the Conqueror” offers stories and music celebrating one of America’s earliest, and often forgotten, folk heroes. It’s being presented by Theatrical Outfit at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s through Aug. 12.

Stage: Walt and Ruthie are throwing a homecoming party for son Trane, a rising hip hop star, in the Atlanta-set “Sheddin’.” The Horizon Theatre Company production  runs through Aug. 19. See our review of the play.

Stage: Revisit a slew of childhood favorites with the Center for Puppetry Arts’ take on “The Tortoise, the Hare and other Aesop’s Fables.” It continues through Sept. 9.

Stage: ART Station’s latest production is the Neil Simon play “I Ought To Be In Pictures.” It continues through Aug. 19 at the  Stone Mountain venue.

Stage: Academy Theatre in Avondale Estates presents Yasmina Reza’s Tony Award-winning “Art,” which explores friendship and aesthetics. The show continues through Aug. 19.

Stage: Cathy Rigby returns as “Peter Pan,” a role that brought her a Tony Award nomination. The performances continues at the Fox Theatre through Aug. 12.

Stage: Atlanta Lyric Theatre presents “Legally Blonde: The Musical,” which is  based on the 2001 comedy that starred Reese Witherspoon as a spurned woman who follows her ex to law school. The show opens Aug. 10 and continues through Aug. 26 at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre at the Cobb Civic Center Complex in Marietta.

Stage: “Avenue Q,” the puppet musical for grown-ups, is being presented by Next Stage Theatre on the Alley Stage at the former Theatre of the Square location in Marietta. It opens Aug. 10 and runs through Aug. 25.

Stage: “All The King’s Women” tells the story of Elvis Presley through the eyes of 17 women. The Center Stage North production runs Aug. 10-18 at the Art Place — Mountain View in Marietta.

Stage: Experience a night of song and dance on the square in Marietta as the Earl Smith Strand Theatre presents “Best of Broadway.” It runs Aug. 10-18.

Stage: In “Private Eyes,” nothing is ever quite what it seems. This comedy of suspicion was written by Steven Dietz and is being produced by the Fern Theatre Company at 7 Stages Aug. 10 through Aug. 25.

SATURDAY
Stage: “A Taste of YEA” is the annual gala presented by the Youth Ensemble of Atlanta. This year, they’ll honor actors Lynn Whitfield and Antonio Fargas and musician Johnta Austin. it happens at 8 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Rialto Center for the Arts at Georgia State University.

Hobbies, family fun: Train enthusiasts will gather at the North Atlanta Trade Center in Norcross for the 43rd annual Atlanta Model Train And Railroadiana Show And Sale. It opens at 9 a.m. Aug. 11.

Family fun, education: It’s Claws & Paws Weekend at the Fernbank Museum of Natural History. It coincides with the museum’s current exhibit, “The Scoop on Poop.” The weekend activities begin at 10 a.m. Aug. 11 and noon-5 p.m. Aug. 12.

SUNDAY
Stage: “Spring Awakening” is the Tony-winning rock musical adaptation of a controversial 19th-century play which explores the turbulent journey from adolescence to adulthood. The Company J production continues at the Marcus Jewish Community Center in Dunwoody through Aug. 19. Check out our preview of the show.
