Best thrift store

goodwill.0930Kate Kimball searches shops as her son, Cayden, 3, sleeps through the search for bargains at the Johns Creek Goodwill Store, which is just one of many locations around the metro area. Goodwill was your pick for best thrift store in and around and Atlanta. Photo: Brant Sanderlin, bsanderlin@ajc.com

YOUR PICKS
1. Goodwill (many locations)
You say, “Goodwill might charge a little more for their merchandise, but they are clean and organized. (I like to look at the racks with the clothing sorted by colors and the rainbow effect!) … Goodwill has a slightly higher standard for their merchandise I think.” and “And I love Goodwill. I am actually wearing a Brooks Brothers dress shirt I bought at Goodwill. 4-5 dollars for Brooks Brothers, Banana Republic, Jos A Banks, Lacoste, and J Crew is not over priced!! Try shopping at these stores @ Lenox!!!”

2. Value Village (12 locations)
3. Last Chance Thrift Store (four locations)
4. Humane Society of Forsyth County (Cumming)
5. Salvation Army (many locations)

OUR PICKS
1. Value Village (12 locations)
We say, “Value Village, which has locations all over Atlanta, is exactly what a thrift store should be. Not only are the prices the cheapest, but the regular sales mean even shopping for furniture and jewelry can be a pleasure. Walk in at the right time and you can score expensive vintage clothing and accessories for pocket change. Who doesn’t love that?”

2. Goodwill (Dunwoody, Northlake)
3. Second Life (Avondale Estates)
4. Last Chance Thrift Store (four locations)
5. FurKids Thrift Store (Norcross)

Love the Goodwill on Roswell Road! I got a brand new, tags still on, Bebe suit for 10 bucks, retails for about $250. Can you believe one of my friends asked me if I was embarrassed about going to the thrift store, I told her to get over herself, my pride and pocket are not hurting, and I look great!!

Prices at the Goodwill in Griffin are high. My vote is for a little place up in Clayton,GA called FAITH thrift store. For a good cause, nice selection of clothes, they have just opened up an auxiliary store for larger items.

America’s Thrift Store because they go to the trouble of sizing the clothes, not just lumping them as “Women’s Shorts”, etc. Also, their employees are nice. Great selection and prices, too.

You don’t seem to worry about too much ignorance going around.

I don’t guess people are buying used undies or the such at these thrift joints, right?

I mean, there is something called a washing machine. People who thrift probably wash the stuff right when they get home.

Besides, the new stuff at the store has often been worn previously, too.

I go to Goodwill in Snellville and Lawrenceville for books and Albums. Can anybody recommend another good place for these 2 items? I tried the Salvation Army on 78 and their selection isn’t geared towards books and albums. They have them, just not a great selection.

Make it plain? Where have you been hiding? Ignorant to think you can get aids or vd from wearing their clothes!! No one in their right mind would wear someone else’s underwear (I would hope no buys “Used” underwear) That would be as stupid as you thinking you can catch it that way!

I was reading these posts and drinking water and when I read Make It Plain’s comment, I laughed so hard the water came out of my nose…I just can’t believe something so ignorant came out of someone’s mouth, especially where everyone can read it. Wow, I’m amazed. I hope that he doesn’t touch a door knob to a store, or drink out of a soda can he hasn’t washed first, or used a public bathroom ever in his life. Oh wait, maybe he did and he caught that ignorance disease that’s going around. Sheese, shaking my head.

Not really a fan of Goodwill stores until I had to help my daughter furnish her off campus apartment. I found a 3 piece bedroom dresser set at the Goodwill in Fayetteville (Hwy 85 across from the Fayetteville Pavillion) for $100 dollars. The young men that loaded my car were very patient, kind and mannerable.

Hmmm, let’s see…..Salvation Army on Hwy 78, the Goodwill stores in Centerville, Lawrenceville and the best of all, Alpharetta (McFarland Pkwy). Have never been in that one that I didn’t find something amazing. Also, the Habitat for Humanity store off 316 has some really good building materials on occasion (kinda hit or miss, though).

I agree with Kay. Would the employees from the Forsyth Humane Society thrift store go back to work please? They are over priced, the items are crammed onto shelves and hard to look thru, and the staff is not very helpful. I have even found stuff in there priced higher than the original stores sticker price, which was left on the item. When I asked, the employees could offer no answer, nor did anything about it and just said if I wanted it, I could pay their price. I personally think the Goodwill stores are the best bet.

The HOPE store, 8560 Holcomb Bridge Road and their second store at Johns Creek ,9850 Nesbit Ferry Road. They are open until 8 during the week which makes it easier for me to drop in after work. They have a large varity of items and the STAFF is amazing. They get my vote.
Also the Fur kids shop just up the road and Treasure mart in Chamblee, they do not carry clothing.

Finders Keepers in Avondale had really good selection years back. Today however, they have gotten so snobbish and their quality is now quirky and poor. Someone please suggest a better shop for shapely 1x and 2x big girls!

In the Northern area, I would say Pier Thrift on 306 in Cumming, Lots of nice furniture and linens.
Abba House Hwy 9 Silver city and at the corner of 309/369 Hammond Crossing is good for clothing. Then The Rack in Dawsonville, Hwy 9 for Clothing. You can make a day out of visiting them.
