The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “Combining shrimp and grits into a dish is a relatively recent phenomenon, beginning only a few decades ago. Some cultural historians believe it grew out of the coastal “gentleman’s meal” of breakfast shrimp. The version at Buckhead Diner gives a nod to these origins by topping fluffy Carolina grits and Georgia shrimp in a thin but rich and peppery tasso ham gravy with a sunny-side up egg.”

Marlow’s Tavern, followed by Six Feet Under. Marlow’s wins on account of their use of a cheese grit cake that is admittedly a bit unorthodox, but extremely tasty. Six Feet Under gets my nod for their “kitchen sink” approach to the dish. Again, not the most traditional, but I do love the extra vegetables they put into their shrimp and grits.

Totally agree with superseg. The Grits Antonio is super-rich (and a heart attack waiting to happen), but I haven’t had better.

It really looks delicious. Shrimp is one of the best food in the world. It’s protein is high and iron is quite high as well. This is a healthy dietary food. http://www.advancedpressureandgutter.com

I second The Nook on Piedmont Park. Unconventional but absolutely delicious! (The grit cakes are amazing even just as a side.) Their shrimp & grits with the tomato beurre blanc sauce over sauteed spinach as an entree is just perfect really.
