Chevy's Diner in McDonough was the readers' pick for best burger in and around Atlanta. It might be a surprise winner for those unfamiliar with it, but Chevy's fans are passionate about this Henry County spot. And doesn't that burger look tasty? Photo courtesy Chevy's Diner.
YOUR PICKS
1. Chevy’s Diner
You say, “Chevy’s Diner in McDonough makes the best burger! Old Blue Eyes is a half pound of awesome-ness with two pieces of thick cut bacon and bleu cheese crumbles.. There’s something about the seasonings they use in the freshly made patties, y’all. It’s just the best burger I’ve ever had!” and “Fantastic hunks of beef on enormous buns with fresh everything — This is the kind of hamburger that you crave and nothing else will do until you can get back over to Chevy’s.”

OUR PICKS
1. Bocado
The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “Chef Todd Ginsberg’s burger at Bocado, a double stack of house-ground farm-raised beef, American cheese and house-made pickles served on an H&F bun, stands out amongst the many contenders for Atlanta’s best burger. Ginsberg’s simple preparation and attention to quality ingredients makes this the strongest offering of its kind in town.”

Been here for 24 years and tried almost every burger in this city, and if you want the “Best True Burger” then US Cafe in Smyrna and Buckhead (off Piedmont) is the place to go for the best meat, bread, etc. So much so I just talked myself into one.

I would have to go with Wonderful World in Emory Village or The Vortex (either location). Wonderful World has really good a la carte burgers, made fresh. And even though this is about burgers, their teri-mayo dog is top notch as well. I’m not going to dive into The Vortex. It’s an Atlanta landmark, so if you haven’t been you need to, and soon!

The burger at Holeman and Finch. The ‘only 24 burgers a night @ 10pm’ is a little gimmicky, but they have them at Sunday Brunch too. Sooooo good, and worth the hype.

I love the old school, right at the top vote for Manuel’s Tavern. They had the best before we were paying for designer burgers. Still a great burger!! George’s is spot on, too! The Vortex truly elevated the burger (shoot, they put pimento cheese on a burger before it was hip). I vote for all of them! Oh, and US Cafe……..dem make a great burger!!!

I’d have to say Farm Burger, although I’d have to say there are some great recommendations on this list.
To the person who asked about Vortex – yes, they still use the standard, food distributor, frozen patties, that a thousand places in town utilize. That’s why the burgers have the rubbery, compressed into a machine-made perfect circle, look and feel. Vortex has a really cool atmosphere, but their burgers are mediocre on a good day.

I personally love Yeah! Burger, George’s & Houston’s. Flip can be inspired but uneven, lacks consistency. Have yet to try H&F and Ann’s but they’re on the bucket list. I can’t get over everybody citing the hockey pucks @ Vortex. It’s a gimmicky tourist trap, people. I’d take Zesto’s over that rubbish any day of the week…

I haven’t had Holeman & Finch but I hear it’s pretty legendary. Grindhouse would be better if they didn’t have a sasquatch in the back mixing the meat with his bare (hairy) arms. Vortex is a cool in-the-city experience, but the burgers really aren’t that spectacular. Flip is good, but a little too frilly for my taste. I would say Smashburger is my favorite (great value too) followed by the burger at TAP (on Peachtree in midtown) with the fried egg on it.

Hands down, Chevy’s Diner is McDonough makes the best burger! Old Blue Eyes is a half pound of awesome-ness with two pieces of thick cut bacon and bleu cheese crumbles.. There’s something about the seasonings they use in the freshly made patties, y’all. It’s just the best burger I’ve ever had!

Being a guy who loves burgers, and growing up in a Texas where beef is king, there is only 1 place in town for me it’s US Cafe in Symrna or in Buckhead. The super burger is the Best Burger in Atlanta hands down. I always get the Super Burger with Musterd, lettuce,Tamato, cheese and Jalapenos. I have been trying to get them to name that the Mike Burger. It’s what I grew up eating in Houston.
I have been to all the places listed below and US Cafe beats them all!

Chevy’s Diner in McDonough!! Fantastic hunks of beef on enormous buns with fresh everything — This is the kind of hamburger that you crave and nothing else will do until you can get back over to Chevy’s — Ike’s “I Like Cheese” burger is my favorite, but the Mini-Burgers are gracious plenty unless your appetite is over the top…Lots to choose from and yummy sides to complete the package.

Mr. Obvious, you have no idea what you are talking about. You give the Vortex as an answer, because that is what “cool” people are supposed to say. Gonzo, I’m with you.. I’ve never been to the Vortex, but I’ve been going to Chevy’s from the beginning. Love it. The owners (who don’t own other eating establishments, I might add) have put a lot of hard work into making Chevy’s so wonderful, from the food to the atmosphere. We ate there Tuesday night.. phenomenal! The only thing that would have been better would have been to go there on a Friday night when the Shoulderbone Creek Orchestra plays. So much fun!
Here’s a great review of Chevy’s.

I can’t wait for the veggie burger list. I’ve had the veggie burger at Grindhouse and it is pretty good. They should work on the sides, however. J Alexander’s has a great veggie burger.
Yeah Burger’s veggie burger is just okay and I’ve heard the same of its meat burgers.
Many have recommended Farm Burger and I’m intrigued. However, since moving here, I’ve found that Atlantans seem to care more about hype or where everyone else goes than good food.
I was tricked into Taqueria Del Sol for the barely decent fish tacos. Pappasito’s fish tacos are much better. Heck, I’ve had better at the mediocre Susi’s Tacos.

The burger itself has a moist, delightfully meaty flavor that tastes much more like a burger than the ones at The Counter (The Counters seem dried out and missing that umami spark to me).
The toppings are varied and flavorful but nothing I’ve had overpowers the flavor of the burger itself, just compliments.

It may seem boring but the burger at Houston’s is great. And, no, I don’t live in the burbs.
I’ve lived in various areas of the city since 1997.
The bar at the Houston’s on P’tree between P’tree Battle and Bennett Street is a good place to pick up lonely housewives from Gwinnett County.
I’ve been to all the places mentioned here, and I like Flip and the Vortex. I went to Yeah Burger and asked the server to recommend something; she suggested I try the chili dog. Ha ha, ‘nough said about the burgers. I think the chili dog was probably good, but can’t say for sure because I had just left Bistro Niko after having about a dozen vodka tonics (I wasn’t driving).
Don’t drink and drive (especially if you go to Hal’s).

I agree with Atlantan about JCT. I love to sit at the bar upstairs and get the beet salad, burger and parmesan truffle fries. Skip the oysters; they’re always freezer burned (no, I don’t keep ordering them; friends do, and I always try one just to reassure myself that it wasn’t a fluke). The atmosphere is great.
If you want to be annoying, and trust me it’s all I really care to do, ask for the lamb burger. They used to have one and it was (I’m not using “hands down” here although the force is strong) truly the best burger in town. I guess they switched to beef because it is somehow less of an affront to someone and they seem sensitive and in denial of the fact that they ever served lamb burger. I play it for the awkwardness, but that’s just me.

It still galls me that Chepe’s advertises with “voted best taco by the AJC” when they got on the list by spamming votes for themself. Benson’s in Hiram. They’re made after you order them, are 1/2 pound each, cooked to order, and the taste is always phenomenal! And their fries are seasoned, hot, and delicious…gotta love ‘em.

Where did that stupid phrase ” hands down”, come from? It is one of the most irritating things on Internet comments these days. Does it mean that everyone who voted for something or someone else should put their “hands down”? Whatever it means, and wherever it came from, it needs to go away. Do us all a favor.

@PB – the term “Hands Down” didn’t originate w/ the Internet. It is a term used to describe something that is easy and it has been around over a hundred years, so all these folks are stretching its use a bit. Anyway, back to the burger talk. Rhea’s in Roswell is good stuff. Miss Ann’s (Ann’s Snack Shack) is legit and if you want a bunch of topping choices then get over to The Vortex and take your pick. An oddball choice is Jim and Nick’s BBQ. Their Pimiento Cheese burger is surprisingly tasty for a BBQ chain.

This is like asking who serves the best water. Clearly there are some crap burgers being served but in general, anyone who uses decent meat and bread is going to have a great burger. It’s up to you to add all the goofy stuff on it.

Apparently a lot of comments here were posted by people who took advantage of the quality education offered by Georgia public schools. Or maybe they went to one of the fine Christian academies founded her in the 1960’s. Here’s a geography lesson, losers: Hiram, Griffin, Lawrenceville, Snellville, Roswell and McDonough all have something in common. They’re not Atlanta. Not even close. Try to pay attention to the title. It’s “Best Burger In and Around Atlanta.”
Those of you mentioning Dunwoody: as you were.
