You say, “So worth the drive. The food is incredible and inexpensive. I just got back from New Orleans and it tastes just like the food there” and “Great food great atmosphere, most of the staff have been there forever and really make you feel part of the family. They always have great specials and 50¢ shrimp night. Their food is amazing and the portions are huge. Also the best banana pudding I have ever put in my mouth (sorry grandma ) lol. Seriously we go here on a regular basis and always refer our friends, clients and family. Check it out you will not be disappointed.”

1. (tie) Gumbeaux’s Cajun Cafe, Douglasville and Adele’s Authentic Cajun Experience, Roswell
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “Both of my top picks serve the spicier cajun fare and both have mastered the depth of flavor frequently neglected in favor of naked heat. Opt for the sampler platters at each so that you can taste a range of dishes including shrimp creole, jambalaya and gumbo. At Gumbeaux’s, which opened in 1994, don’t miss the jambalaya bursting with smoky heat. At Adele’s, a relative newcomer, having opened in the last 6 months, try the shrimp creole, which is brothy, tangy and packed with tomato flavor.”

Atlanta Highway Seafood Market in Gainesville can throw down po-boys, gumbo, red beans and rice, and jambalaya with the best of them. They worked on fish boats out of New Orleans before moving to Gainesville, and returns to New Orleans twice a week to get fresh fish.

The best overall menu and taste that I’ve come across is Gumbeaux’s in downtown Douglasville. And believe it or not, AJ’s Poboys in Marietta on Roswell Rd. is the best Po-boy I’ve had in GA. Recently moved back to ATL and happened to find Zuffy’s at Druid Hills. It is the reincarnation of the old Fuzzy’s, complete with Joe Dale’s recipes (salad dressing, mussels, bread pudding, yummmmmm). The Jambayaya, Etouffe, PoBoys and numerous crawfish recipes take me tastewise near some rolling good time memories. The food is great and to make it perfect, many of the Fuzzy’s staff is there and they remembered me! Can’t get much better than great food, service, location and memories!

fyi… douglasville is not even close to atlanta. so, automatic disqualifier in my book. Parish in Inman Park = fail for LA food (but their desserts are awesome). If your gold standard for Louisiana food is Pappadeaux, or even worse Red Lobster, I feel sorry for you. The poboy at the Tavern at Phipps is ok, but never has enough oysters (plus the fat freaky boy george waiter is gross if you know who i’m talking about). the red beans and rice w sausage at Zuffy’s isn’t too bad flavor-wise, except their rice is always old. mckinnon’s and copelands are ok, but both are overpriced. let’s face it, atlanta needs a good cajun/creole seafood restaurant…right now!

Anyone who nominates Papadeaux’s for “Best Cajun” also thinks Captain D’s is ‘Best Seafood” lol.
@Gulf Coaster: IE Beyond the Bayou. They moved from their Johnson Ferry Road location to that old house in Chamblee. They moved right as the economy tanked. It was hard to find them and there was a lapse in time between when they closed one place and opened the other. They never recovered from it. That area was supposed to be developed and wasn’t. As such Beyond the Bayou went to the Great Beyond lol. They served to ONLY authentic roast beef po’boy I’ve had in over 20 years that i didn’t make myself. Since they closed I have yet to find a real Cajun place.
I guess I’ll have to make sure my passport is up to date and head out to Douglasville and try that gumbeaux’s place. but hell, by the time I’ve driven that far I’m half way to Louisiana anyway and may as well keep heading west for the real stuff……….

I agree with guy about places in Acworth or Douglasville (especially DALLAS), being called “Best of Atlanta.” However when it comes to Cajun food/Creole food, there just aren’t 5 places worth nominating. Front Page News is decent food, but I wouldn’t call them authentic. The Oyster Barn makes a pretty decent Gumbo. 98% of the places that serve a “po’boy” haven’t a clue what a po’boy even is, they just have some kind of fried seafood they throw on any type of roll they can get cheap and CALL it a “po’boy.” i mean just damn, one place in Lawrenceville (forget the name) had a “po’boy” as they called it on Cuban bread. Why didn’t he call it an oyster CUBAN Sandwich for pete’s sake?
I have tried every new “Cajun’ place I hear about with hope and anticipation, but I know of any still open IN ATLANTA that are worth really calling a ‘Cajun” or Creole place. Most do to Cajun what a $2.00 all you can eat buffet does for Chinese……….

Thanks for the update Fred! Yes, we went there a few times after it moved to Chamblee. One day we showed up for lunch and the place was closed. That was too bad because we enjoyed going there.
Definitely update the passport and take a trip to D’ville. My husband and I share some of our best pre-children memories of New Orleans and love to go to Gumbeaux on our date nights. It has a similar atmosphere to Beyond the Bayou (pre-Chamblee) and I love their po boys. The price is much more reasonable than McKinnon’s too.

For the morons assuming Gumbeaux’s is begging friends and family to spend time on this blog, you are just sad. It’s 2 minutes from Six Flags and 20 minutes from the heart of Atlanta….close than Henry’s I might add….and if you all had half a brain you’d know this blog was asking for Metro Atlanta, not just downtown. I am grew up 11 miles from the french quarter, down on the bayou and trust me when I say, if I wanted to eat good LA dishes, I’d go to A. Gumbeaux’s and B. AJ’s in Marietta. A few other places dable with a good dish or two here and there…but consistently, those are the two worth closing your eyes and picking anything on the menu. I would like to get over to Adele’s soon, it’s relatively new so I hadn’t the chance to make it Roswell yet….but soon.

Mr. Acadian: Your gumbo is a pale shadow of a weak broth when compared to mine lol. I’ll bet your roux is still white when you start adding stuff and if it isn’t it’s because you burnt it
You probably take the heads and bones and skin off the fish, and the shells off the crabs, crawfish and shrimp. Do you use echrich farms instead of a good REAL andouille or boudin? Boneless skinless chicken breasts instead of the whole damn chicken?
LOL I challenge you.

@Ben – Henry’s isn’t authentic? Seriously? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve read on the AJC, and that’s saying an awful lot!
Henry’s is definitely the best – bar none. Gumbeaux is alright, but definitely not worth the drive unless you’re already in Douglasville.

Not trying to boast but have yet to find a restaurant that comes close to my cooking.
I’m from LA and sorry, but Henry’s is fair at best. Eaten there numerous times hoping it’ll get better but the scorched roux, mushy rice, wierd flavors make it tough.
Parish doesn’y cut it either. Guess I’ll have to make the drive out to D’ville and check out Gumbeaux’s.

I like Henry’s, but can anyone explain to me what makes his Ooh LaLa a cajun dish? I’ll tell you what – nothing. It’s closer related to an italian alfredo than it is to cajun. Don’t get me wrong, its a tasty dish but does not represent authentic cajun in any way. Judge apples to apples by sticking to the creole staples. Also, does anybody know of a cajun restaurant serving boudin in the Atlanta area?

Been to Gumbeaux’s a couple of times. It was good, but for whatever reason didn’t blow me away. AJ’s in East Cobb is a hidden gem tucked into a Kroger shopping center. Gumbeaux’s in Douglasville is THE destination for Cajun food in Metro Atlanta. I once went to both Gumbeaux’s & Henry’s in the same week, ordering crawfish etouffee & crab cakes. Henry’s served a fine meal, but Gumbeaux’s was superb. I went to high school & college in Baton Rouge, where Gumbeaux’s would thrive.

Henry’s Louisiana Grill! Everything on the menu is fantastic. I’ve never had a bad experience. Portions are out of control and I always have leftovers (which of course I take home). The atmosphere is wonderful. Henry is very personable and visits each and every table making sure their experience is satisfactory while handing out mardi gras beads. Not to mention Henry’s Uptown, a bar located above the restaurant with live bands playing every week. From the historic downtown exposed brick building that it’s located in, to the cajun decor; Henry’s is the best cajun/ creole restaurant.

With out a doubt Gumbeaux’s in Douglasville is one of the best Cajun restaurants I have ever eaten at. They have wonderful service, and amazing mouth-watering food. I’ve just recently moved out of state, but I would defiantly make a trip out there just to eat their food. And right now, I’m craving their Crawfish Etouffee and Bananas Foster.

Henry’s Rocks! I have taken many people from my company to Henry’s over the years. Recently we were in New Orleans and ate as a group at Mulates…the mainstay Cajun restaurant in the Quarter. After dinner every person that was familiar with Henry’s commented on how much better Henry’s was! If you want the best Cajun…bypass New Orleans and come to Acworth! The gator rocks, the Abita is cold and the Oooh La La is hot baby!

For the person who said Red Lobster, really?? Their seafood is not the best either. We basically stopped eating there.
Pappadeaux is ok, but I would not consider it the best in town.
Right now the best Cajun restaurant I have been to lately is Adele’s in Roswell. Awesome Po Boys, and great gumbos! Chef Marc used to work at some awesome restaurants in New Orleans and he brings his experience to the Atlanta area. It is a must try!!!

Adele’s in Roswell is the best! Having grown up on the gulf coast, with family in NOLA, I know creole and New Orleans cooking. Adele’s has amazing po’boys. The bread is the best I’ve had outside of NOLA. The seafood is always cooked to perfection and is never tough. And, that’s just a start! The gumbo, red beans, étouffée, jumbalya, always take me home. The chef specials are a treat and we finish off with a chicory coffee and biegnet.
We have introduced many to Adele’s, all love it. It’s not just the food that will keep you coming back. The ambiance, the friendly service and the feeling of family makes you want to stay.

GG’s Fine Foods has the real deal if you’re looking for Creole! I came across GG at the Roswell Farmer’s Market. She sells frozen heat and eat Creole items like Crawfish Pie (her Grandmother’s recipe!), Seafood Gumbo (the best I’ve had outside Louisiana!) and other delicious dishes. She had a restaurant in New Orleans and relocated here after Hurricane Katrina. GG’s Fine Foods has a website where you can contact GG. Call her, she loves to visit & she can help you with all your Louisiana food cravings!

You’ll have to come to my house, because everything we have tried in ATL just sucks. Even Gumbeaux’s in Douglasville had a nasty gumbo. You could tell there was no love put into the food. But I’m a little biased, being married to a true Cajun who can cook up a storm.
