Best ribs

Grand Champion BBQ may be the new kid on the block, but this new barbecue spot is already impressive. It was both the readers pick and our pick for best ribs in and around Atlanta. Photo: Becky Stein / Special

YOUR PICKS
1. Grand Champion BBQ
You say, “Tastiest ribs on this or any other planet are the baby back ribs at GC BBQ. Hickory smoked heaven.” and “Grand Champion has earned its name! Their ribs are moist and smoky and to sauce them would be a culinary sin! Perfection!”

2. Fat Matt’s Rib Shack
3. Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q
4. Community Q
5. JJ’s Rib Shack
6. Thompson Brothers BBQ

OUR PICKS
1. Grand Champion BBQ
The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “Owner Robert Owens will convert devotees of BBQ spare ribs with the exceptionally thick and juicy baby back ribs he serves at Grand Champion BBQ in Roswell. Unlike most baby back ribs, Grand Champion’s will surprise you with the amount of meat on each bone, and Owens does a remarkable job of infusing the meat with a strong smoke flavor.”

I’m not saying Fat Matts because yes, I have been there, and there is no way a boiled rib smothered in mediocre (but syrupy sweet for the typical Atlanta crowd) sauce is acceptable to any knowledgeable foodie. A true SMOKED rib like Fox Bros. or Community Q is the only way to eat.

A little off-topic, but can anyone tell my why the pork ribs at Manuel’s Tavern are as good as they are? That’s not a BBQ joint. It’s a pub. But my 10-year old orders the Manny’s Ribs every time we go, which is 3 times a month, and those ribs are pretty darn good for pub ribs.

On topic – Fox Bros.

@ GA PEACHY…you are correct. The Mom and Pop joints are the best. The best ribs were always at Auburn Ave Rib Shack.

Dreamland BBQ – okay, not as good as the original in Tuscaloosa, but still very good ribs. (Peachtree Corners location)

Neal’s BBQ in Thomson, Georgia. It’s worth the drive on a Saturday Morning down I-20 East. The Ribs, BBQ and Hash is worth it! They cook 15 or more Hogs on Thursday – Saturday. They have fresh of the pig ‘Pork Skins’ available but it sells out early! ‘Have Mercy!’ The BEST!

I agree with the gentleman who said Atlanta is not a good ‘cue town … and Fat Matt’s is maybe the worst place for ‘cue in the South, other than Daddy D’s.

I like Shanes Rib Shack. But this one time my friend went in there with me before a Tony, Toni, Tone concert. She had been “drinking” and whatnot. So she had the ribs and then she had some fries. And my another friend told her to do a shot of barbcue sauce. Lets just say that it was not a pretty site. First she was in the “bathroom” then it came out to the table like a trail of ribs and tortillas and she couldn’t remember when she had tortillas then I remind her she ate at Pollo Loco two days before.

Talk about nostalgia and a trip 50-60 years into past, the before mentioned Auburn Avenue Rib Shack, and the Houston Street Rib Shack as well. Both where my honky love of ribs started (Thank you, Dad.), and overjoyed that there are several fine places around today, but not Fatt Matts, may they boil in hell.
