OUR PICKS
1. Swallow at the Hollow
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “The homemade buttermilk biscuits at Swallow at the Hollow epitomize the Southern biscuit: fluffy, tender and buttery. The biscuits are halved and pan-seared, resulting in a toasty crisp inner layer shining with butter. Swallow at the Hollow’s biscuits are eye-rolling good, particularly when smeared with the accompanying honey.”

It’s hard to believe that anyone would post anything other than Mamie’s biscuits as the best biscuits available for purchase. I can only assume that anyone who listed anything else has never had one. There are multiple locations on the east side of town. Covington, Conyers, Lithonia.

I see the Flying Biscuit is rallying their employees to vote for those overly sweet hockey pucks they serve. Meanwhile, I’ll take the Silver Skillet with red eye gravy (even though its 30 miles from me).

It depends...

Biscuits are NOT: Hockey pucks, “cat heads”, 3-inch tall mounds, chewy, and tough

Now, that has knocked out most things that people are calling “great”.

REAL biscuits are: buttery, flaky crust, pillow-like interior, just the right size with a height of no more than one-half inch.

Homemade is best, but if you can’t get a homemade one:

Chik-fil-a has some of the worst biscuits around. Thick, chalky, rubbery, chewy. Tasteless. Anyone that “enjoys” these things has NEVER had a real biscuit.

Hardee’s does a pretty darn good one. Buttery, flaky.

Red Lobster has great “dinner” biscuits.

I’m with you on the biscuits at Popeye’s. If they are made any better anywhere, it has to be against the law..

Yes, Mary Mac’s is another place for good biscuits, but Hickory House biscuits are too huge to be appetizing—plus flaky, they are not.

No disrepect, but the biscuits in the photo look like dry, thick mounds of flour! Yuck!

My litmus test for biscuits is “are these as good as my grandmas were”. With that in mind, Java Jive and Crackerbarrel have biscuits that are on par with what she used to make.

Per a watiress during my most recent and probably final visit The Flying Biscuit, they changed the recipe for the biscuits @ the flying biscuit to reduce the calorie count from 600 a piece to 300 a piece. HUGE mistake. I went to TFB in Raleigh, NC a couple years back that they were great but recent went to TFB on Northside and the biscuits and the service was subpar.

I’ll take Chick-fil-a, J Christopher’s, etc over The Flying Biscuit any day of the week. If TFB wins this poll, I’ll know to stop paying attention to these threads.

Apparently not everyone knows what a true southern biscuit is. I love you Flying Biscuit – but I certainly don’t like your bisuits! Love Homegrown, J Christophers and Silver Skillet. If Thumbs Up had gravy as previously mentioned, they would get a “thumbs up”.

Biscuit Barn in Cumming on 141 is the best that I have found so far, note that they are not open on Sundays. Hardees is my second choice, assuming you can find one.

I agree that Flying Biscuits are NOT that good–this must be something from their former glory. They have the best breakfast in town, except for the biscuits.

RED LOBSTER beats everyone hands down.

Easy one, Swallow in the Hollow in Roswell. Monster biscuitts served split down the middle and grilled with honey on the side. Lots of good choices listed above, but this is the real deal.

If you said, Flying Biscuit (more like a brick), Red Lobster, Popeyes, KFC, Chick-fil-a or BoJangles, you really need to get out more.

The Biscuit Barn in Cumming, has the best biscuits.

There is no better biscuit recipe than Popeye’s. For those who like biscuits with a fragile, crisp, buttery top, Popeye’s fills the bill with an easy-on-the-lard texture and a natural, traditional biscuit flavor, as opposed to the yucky, sweetened biscuits served at Chick-Fil-A. Hardee’s biscuits are my next favorite, very consistently prepared, and very complimentary to anything you put in them, from bologna to country ham to their luxurious new cheddar cheese.
