You say, “Brick Store Pub in Decatur has phenomenal fish and chips” and “The Brick Store Pub has the best fish ‘n chips in this town, full stop!”

OUR PICKS
1. P’cheen
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “The fish and chips at P’cheen arrived stacked in Chef Alex Friedman’s signature Lincoln-Log-plating style. Steaming hot thick fingers of Icelandic cod sport a light, crispy and aggressively seasoned Guinness-beer batter. Cooked perfectly, the fish here doesn’t absorb excess grease, a common pitfall of this dish. The fish sits atop lightly battered fat potato wedges and a dollop of textured mushy peas.”

Not necessarily the best, but the best for your buck is $5 fish and chips at Hand in Hand on Fridays. Good-but-not-great, huge portion of fish and a load of fries for cheap!

Steinbeck’s in Oakhurst Village, Decatur. Many people will never bother the trek off the beaten path but Steinbeck’s is worth the trip. The Fish and Chips are only on the special board so they usually run out, but are able to get it back on the special board in just a day or two.

Bankhead Seafood!!!!!!!!! Still the best after 20+ years. They are located in the Grove Park community on Donald L. Hollowell Pkwy. The line is always wrapped around the building, but its worth the wait. Large portions of fish and fries and you have a choice of desserts and other sides if you wish. A great staple in the community.

How come any time there is a ‘best of Atlanta” topic we ALWAYS get two types of asshats who think they are original or funny? The first arrogant type is the one like San, who mentions a place 1000’s of miles away, and the second “jokester” is the one who says, “my kitchen.”

When you post “my kitchen”, asshat, give us your fricking address so we can come eat there. And you arrogant snobs who think everything is better somewhere else, then go BACK there dammit.

Unfortunately, I can’t nominate any place, I perused the thread for suggestions. Fish and chips is something I rarely have a want of. I’ll try it at Manchester Arms though next time I eat near my daughters school. Been meaning to give that place a try anyway.

Many of the previously mentioned around Atlanta are good… but the only GREAT fish and chips I have had in the states are a bit south of town in Savannah. AJC should consider doing a write-up about Kevin Barry’s on River Street. They use Tilapia which makes a big difference and serve true “chips”. Rather than french fries you get potato’s cut in wheels and then fried with the fish so it picks up just a touch of the batter. Enjoyed with a plate full of malt vinegar this meal has yet to be beat in my experiences around the nation. You also get traditional soda bread that comes out with the proper consistency. Besides possibly having the best Reuben as well you should try the potato soup. Banging! Kevin Barry’s also get’s my vote for having the truest Irish Pub vibe for what it’s worth.
