OUR PICKS
1. P’cheen
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “The fish and chips at P’cheen arrived stacked in Chef Alex Friedman’s signature Lincoln-Log-plating style. Steaming hot thick fingers of Icelandic cod sport a light, crispy and aggressively seasoned Guinness-beer batter. Cooked perfectly, the fish here doesn’t absorb excess grease, a common pitfall of this dish. The fish sits atop lightly battered fat potato wedges and a dollop of textured mushy peas.”

Not necessarily the best, but the best for your buck is $5 fish and chips at Hand in Hand on Fridays. Good-but-not-great, huge portion of fish and a load of fries for cheap!

Ormsby’s on Howell Mill Road. Great pub atmosphere as well. I’ll also give a shout out to Meehan’s in Vinings.

Steinbeck’s in Oakhurst Village, Decatur. Many people will never bother the trek off the beaten path but Steinbeck’s is worth the trip. The Fish and Chips are only on the special board so they usually run out, but are able to get it back on the special board in just a day or two.

I also like Hand in Hands in the Highlands. Their fish and chips treatment is extra delicious with its lemon and herbs. Really nice with an ice cold beer sitting outside on a beautiful Fall day :)

Bankhead Seafood!!!!!!!!! Still the best after 20+ years. They are located in the Grove Park community on Donald L. Hollowell Pkwy. The line is always wrapped around the building, but its worth the wait. Large portions of fish and fries and you have a choice of desserts and other sides if you wish. A great staple in the community.

@Willie-The wings were not for me, but I had to steal one. Sorry I did. I just get frustrated when a restaurant messes up something so easy to make. Should I not mention the Blizzard I had on the way home?

I may be partial because it’s in my neighborhood but McCrackens on the Marietta Square does it as good as I’ve ever had and I am one who is partial to fried food so I should be a reliable source. I’m sure a lot of these places do it well but McCrackens has to be right there at the top.

Others have mentioned Brick Store and Marlay House, both of which are good, but my favorite is at Brewhouse Cafe in L5P. A huge fillet of perfectly breaded haddock. The only thing there worth ordering.

I had McCrackens’ fish and chips and was sorely dissapointed. I could not even finish the small portion of fish that was served. It was soggy with a strange taste and odor. I joked with friends that it was caught fresh from the ‘hooch that day.
