YOUR PICKS
1. Nuevo Laredo Cantina
You say, “Nuevo Laredo. I’m from Southern California and it beats anything else I’ve had around here, it’s a much better representation than anything else” and “Best Tacos de carne asada! Margaritas are excellent as well.”

2. Taqueria Los Hermanos
3. Taqueria La Oaxaquena
4. Bone Garden Cantina
5. Mi Barrio

The deliciously authentic tlayuda from Taqueria La Oaxaquena in Jonesboro. Now 10 years old, this beloved spot is our pick for best Mexican restaurant in and around Atlanta. Photo: Becky Stein / Special

OUR PICKS
1. Taqueria La Oaxaquena
The AJC dining team’s specialist in International Cuisine Gene Lee says, “The regional style steeped in Oaxaca, central Mexico, is the primary reason this Jonesboro restaurant is my top choice. And that’s largely due to the restaurant’s tlayuda, a thin crunchy tortilla topped with stringy quesillo cheese, avocado, beans and spicy chorizo sausage or steak. You can eat it like a pizza but the taste is undoubtedly Mexico.”

2. El Rey del Taco
3. La Pastorcita
4. Taco L1000000
5. Holy Taco

Oaxaquenia. 80 percent of the restaurants you all have cited above aren’t even Mexican. They are tex-mex. Heavy on the tex. Nuevo Laredo, which I love, is not Mexican food. Take that down to central Mexico and people would be like – why is there broiled monterey jack cheese and salsa served on top of every dish? Where are the vegetables?

@SAWB..I remember El Chico’s..Cumberland Mall, my older brother was a cook there.. Great place..

I guess I’ve never had real Mexican food based on some of these places..Especially Neuvo Larado, have had food from there two or three times and was not real impressed..

My favorite USED to be El Azteca in Milton, but the new manager was a real jerk last time I was there so we won’t go back. My new #1 favorite is LAREDO’S in Cumming! Their Shrimp Fajita Chimichanga is the BEST!!!!! :)

You do not know what a Mexican restaurant is until you visit one of the TAQUERIA LOS HERMANOS.
Any other mex restaurants are just imitations

Love Taqueria Los Hermanos on Sugarloaf and in Lilburn. I’m sure the other locations are just as good. We always have great food, fabulous margaritas and friendly staff. I’ll be there Friday night!

I’m a fan of Poblano’s Mexican Grill in Acworth. Consistent preparation and less oil than other Mexican restaurants I go to. La Parilla comes in second.

Lupita’s in Norcross on Indian Trail Rd is delicious and good prices, also has full bar and friendly service. Closest to our house that rates the best is Los Hernmanos on Lawrnceville Hwy at Killian Hill, great food, very consistent and usually very busy.

Lime Taqueria in Smyrna is the real deal. In other words, Mexican foods beyond just tacos, tortas, and burritos. Their dinner dishes have complex flavors. No surprise given that they have a professional chef from Oaxaca, Mexico. I’ve seen former Mexican President Vincente Fox dine there. I’ve gone to Mexican wine tasting that was paired with Mexican lamb chops, seafood, etc.

El Chico is a national chain which I’m guessing has shrunk in size since the Mexicans started opening up places around here in — when was it — the late ’80s?

Maybe it’s not real “traditional mexican”, but that’s why I adore Taqueria Del Sol so much. Can’t stand mouth-burning, sloppy red stuff covered food. TDS is the singular restaurant I patronize that is ALWAY wonderful, hot and extremely affordable! And Eddie, the owner and menu creator, is certainly a real Mexican! Fish tacos are manna from Heaven, and the best quac in town.

I ate at the Chepe’s on Johnson Ferry a few weeks ago, based on the “best taco” vote a few months ago – that was the most disgusting food I’ve eaten in a long time. My sister agreed – we’ll never go there again.
