OUR PICKS
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “Atlanta’s cupcake scene has exploded over the past year. As I compared cupcakes from many of our local shops, the unique strengths of each bakery revealed themselves. Instead of ranking the five best cupcake spots, I offer the best features of five local cupcake bakeries and a few flavors to try (in no particular order).”

Gigi’s Cupcakes, multiple locations
Best feature: Filled cupcakes, which keep the cupcakes moist
Flavor to try: Coconut Cream-filled — A mountain of smooth coconut cream awaits.

Alpine Bakery, Alpharetta
Best feature: Moist and flavorful cake
Flavor to try: Turtle cheesecake — Is it a cake or a cheesecake?

The Atlanta Cupcake Factory, Poncey-Highland
Best feature: Cream-cheese based frostings
Flavor to try: Lemon — It might as well be a lemon meringue pie.

The Great Cupcake Co., Buckhead
Best feature: Fun flavors that venture beyond the traditional
Flavor to try: Creamsicle — Think of a frosted orange from The Varsity.

Jilly’s Cupcakery, Alpharetta
Best Feature: largest selection of miniature cupcakes
Flavor to try: Peanut butter chocolate — Peanut butter buttercream steals the show here.

The Strawberry cupcake from Sweet Justice is the best I’ve ever had! The Carrot cupcake is equally delicious because the flavors come together really well. The sweetness from the cream cheese icing carries the cake without providing an intense overwhelming sugar rush. Even better, the owner provides free samples to her Facebook followers and serves made-to-order fresh cupcakes.

Definitely Gigi’s. I go to the one at the forum in Duluth and they are amazing. I think you need to try all the places before throwing out an opinion on this and i have been to many of the ones listed. I see lots for Jilly’s though, never heard of them, might need to check it out.

Jilly’s in Alpharetta are average at best. Very dry. Been there two or three times and had several different ones and they are all the same – not moist – dry.

I’ve visited a few cupcakeries in Atlanta. Camicake was not good to me. I bought the red velvet and the lemon drop. By the time I gave my fiance’ the lemon drop (about 2 hours after I bought it), the bottom of the box had a huge oil stain. The red velvet was dry and tasted like white cake with red dye. As soon as he took a bite of the lemon drop, he looked at me and asked if he had to eat anymore. So I haven’t been back.

I’ve had cupcakes from the Cupcake Factory and wasn’t impressed with them either. Too much icing for the cake size and the cake wasn’t good.

I love A Piece of Cake’s red velvet. It’s huge, has the right icing to cake ratio and taste like red velvet should.

When they were in business, Chocolate Pink had a lovely red velvet. I miss them. :-(

CAMI CAKES are by far the best. Gigi load on the frosting and have a bland taste, too sweet. There is always a line out the door for Cami Cakes! I even got to meet little Cami once and she is a doll!

With the looks of folks around here too many cupcakes are eaten! Glad y’all can enjoy the sweet treats and think you can afford the extra pounds. Personally, too many calories for me. Time to go for my morning run!

I love Cami Cakes! However, I wish they would invest in more cupcake friendly packaging to keep the cakes separate. I often end up with butter stains showing on the outside of the box. This isn’t overly appealing, but the cakes for fantastic! Sometimes, you can’t judge a book by its cover.

CaseyCakes makes the most delicious strawberry lemonade cupcake. Moist, with real strawberries in the cake and in the to-die-for cream cheese frosting. She also does an amazing 24 carrot cupcake, a cannoli cupcake, and many others. Find her on Facebook.

I use to be die hard Cami. They are now #2. The best cupcake is Whimsical in Grayson, GA. I thought there was no one who could ever take Cami but Whimsical Sweets bake Shop does it well. The red velvet cupcake are the best. They also have brownies. If you don’t think Whimsical is better I am willing to pay for your cupcake. It not close to everyone and if it has to be the city of Atlanta then Cami is still good.

The very best cupcakes are at “The Cup” its located in a new community “Town Brookhaven” off of Peachtree Rd very near Oglethrope University. The cupcakes are a nice size (not huge) and delicious. They melt in your mouth. They are made fresh daily. There are daily specials and a great variety. The coffee is pretty good and they have free wireless!!

Hands down, Pink Cupcake Dreams! They have the perfect amount of sweetness, great cream cheese based icing, moist, and above all they taste a-may-zing. The baker really thinks about the flavour and adds ingredients such as coffee to make them unique and delicious. Best cupcake you will ever eat, I promise you.
Doesn’t hurt that they have names such as ‘better than sex’ and they come in a nice pink foil cupcake wrapper.

My cake/cupcake tastes run to light, not dense, in both the cake and frosting. No place does that better than Star Provisions. Their cupcake are light and flavorful and their buttercream frosting is real butter that is also light as air.

What is all of this attention and excitment to cupcakes??? Is this the new Take home-a-sack? Snacking Obese America! The last time I had a cupcake was about 50 years ago that my mama made, white cake with chocolate icing and I could lick the spoon and bowl…YUM!…………..
