OUR PICKS
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “Atlanta’s cupcake scene has exploded over the past year. As I compared cupcakes from many of our local shops, the unique strengths of each bakery revealed themselves. Instead of ranking the five best cupcake spots, I offer the best features of five local cupcake bakeries and a few flavors to try (in no particular order).”

Gigi’s Cupcakes, multiple locations
Best feature: Filled cupcakes, which keep the cupcakes moist
Flavor to try: Coconut Cream-filled — A mountain of smooth coconut cream awaits.

Alpine Bakery, Alpharetta
Best feature: Moist and flavorful cake
Flavor to try: Turtle cheesecake — Is it a cake or a cheesecake?

The Atlanta Cupcake Factory, Poncey-Highland
Best feature: Cream-cheese based frostings
Flavor to try: Lemon — It might as well be a lemon meringue pie.

The Great Cupcake Co., Buckhead
Best feature: Fun flavors that venture beyond the traditional
Flavor to try: Creamsicle — Think of a frosted orange from The Varsity.

Jilly’s Cupcakery, Alpharetta
Best Feature: largest selection of miniature cupcakes
Flavor to try: Peanut butter chocolate — Peanut butter buttercream steals the show here.

A lot of people have recommended Cami Cakes and I went there one day leaving not impressed. It was later in the day so maybe I just caught them at a bad time.

Cloud 9 in Roswell and soon to be in Lenox Mall gets my vote!

CamiCakes rules the Atlanta cupcake scene. Her cake is always moistl, even after a few days. The cupcake top is crisp and the icing is perfection! Her cupcakes have personality and the taste always lives up to the beauty with which they are presented. Can you tell I’m addicted?!

I haven’t found any great cupcakes in Atlanta. They’re all fine/good, but not great. So I vote for Curbside Cupcakes and Baked&Wired in DC.

Holly’s Cupcake Shop is THE best. Founded in Conyers with a new location that just opened in Colony Square (corner of Peachtree and 14th street). They have specialty flavors for every day of the week!

Such a shame that Caroline’s Cupcakes at Oak Grove are so small, dry, expensive and too frosted. We need a REAL cupcake store around those parts! All these young folks around Oak Grove “Crossroads” would flock to a spectacular cupcake place. Been to a few around and still think Publix has fab cupcakes in all flavors.

Little Cakes in Sandy Springs! She uses fresh ingredients and her frostings are NOT made with shortening! I wasn’t impressed with Cami Cakes- it seemed the only frosting option was cream cheese which seemed to melt as soon as you left the store. Overall, the best cupcake I *ever* had was from Trophy in Seattle.

My husband and I visited Jilly’s Cupcakery in Alpharetta with a couple of friends. We bought a huge variety of cupcakes – unfortunately we were very disappointed. I thought Red Velvet cupcakes should be RED … not the burnt brown color mine were! We all felt our cupcakes were dry (like they had been left out for a day) and tasteless. By all the rave reviews above, maybe we went on a bad day. I felt so bad for our friends, that I went home and baked them some “real” cupcakes!

Yum Yum Cupcake truck.. best in Atlanta! Cami Cakes and GiGi’s pile their icing to the ceiling and it distracts from the cupcake. I get cupcakes from the yum yum truck weekly at either woodruff arts center or atlantic station!
