OUR PICKS
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “Atlanta’s cupcake scene has exploded over the past year. As I compared cupcakes from many of our local shops, the unique strengths of each bakery revealed themselves. Instead of ranking the five best cupcake spots, I offer the best features of five local cupcake bakeries and a few flavors to try (in no particular order).”
Gigi’s Cupcakes, multiple locations
Best feature: Filled cupcakes, which keep the cupcakes moist
Flavor to try: Coconut Cream-filled — A mountain of smooth coconut cream awaits.
Alpine Bakery, Alpharetta
Best feature: Moist and flavorful cake
Flavor to try: Turtle cheesecake — Is it a cake or a cheesecake?
The Atlanta Cupcake Factory, Poncey-Highland
Best feature: Cream-cheese based frostings
Flavor to try: Lemon — It might as well be a lemon meringue pie.
The Great Cupcake Co., Buckhead
Best feature: Fun flavors that venture beyond the traditional
Flavor to try: Creamsicle — Think of a frosted orange from The Varsity.
Jilly’s Cupcakery, Alpharetta
Best Feature: largest selection of miniature cupcakes
Flavor to try: Peanut butter chocolate — Peanut butter buttercream steals the show here.

The Cupcake Crusader and Jilly’s Cupcakery top Caryn’s Cakes and Metrotainment for size, richness, and consistent freshness. THE CUPCAKE CRUSADER and Jilly’s get my vote.

McEntyres Bakery in Smyrna has the freshest and best cupcakes in Atlanta. My favorites are the Red Velvet and the Chocolate / Peanut Butter puffy cupcakes. They are also the most reasonably priced in the city!

Atlanta Cupcake Factory is the one for me! I typically find most cupcakes to be overly dry, especially chocolate ones. But I have never had a dry cupcake from them. Case in point: Red Velvet is usually best experienced as a slice of cake, not a cupcake. But I’ll take a Red Velvet Cupcake from Atlanta Cupcake Factory any day! Their menu is definitely one of the most creative and expansive in the Atlanta cupcake world, too. From El Diablo to Chocolate Peanut Butter Bacon, you cannot miss.
Closer to home (I live in East Cobb), Gigi’s makes some very tasty and quite pretty cupcakes. I favor the fall/winter menu over the current spring/summer one, but their cupcakes are as delightful to eat as they are pleasing to the eye.

Jilly’s Cupcakery in Alpharetta for their salted carmel or maple bacon. Wonderful daily selections keeps things fresh and new for their customers. I’d also have to give a shout-out to Camicakes for their amazing red velvet. I miss Sweet Pockets, though. Nothing like their icing, hands-down!

My daughter has so many allergies and we have had gluten vegan cupcakes before, but they were always mushy. Jilly’s brought a sprarkle to my daughter’s eyes. These cupcakes are sooooo awsome!!!!! I think if we ever move out of the area we will just have to have them ship overnight!!!!

Let there be NO mistaking real cupcake makers for pretenders…..the best two in all of metro Atlanta are Amazing Cakes in Mableton (best kept secret) and Cami Cake. But when it comes to best value and best taste, Amazing Cakes is the undisputed champ!
Who would pay over $3 for a cupcake, anyway? Crazy!

I don’t like Gigi’s. There cupcakes are too “heavy on top”. I think a cupcake should balance moist cake with creamy icing. Cami cakes does this perfectly. Also, if you can get them (they sell out quickly) Henri’s Bakery has sublime chocolate cupcakes.

“Recovering lawyer” turned baker, La’Keitha provides some criminally good cupcakes over at Sweet Justice. Luckily there are mini-versions so I can minimize the guilt when ordering each of my favorites – strawberry, red velvet, and caramal.
