You say, “The pies are creative and always fresh that day” and “Hard to narrow down – blueberry almond cream, apricot brie, chocolate ganache … TOMATO Pie, fried greeen tomato pie … no, I think I got it BLACKBERRY. I’ll have to go back and try them all again to see which I like best …It is different every week at Pie Shop on Roswell Road.”

OUR PICKS
1. Pie Shop
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “A newcomer to Atlanta’s pie scene, Pie Shop is making a name for itself in a big way. It has mastered the two essential features of pie: crust and filling. Pie crusts are delicate, rich and buttery. Fillings are varied and creative, venturing beyond the standard apple and lemon. Here, you’ll find flavors such as cantaloupe chiffon, plum with candied ginger and blueberry rhubarb. Pie Shop has a light touch with the sugar, avoid the common pie flaw of over-sweetening. One of my favorites is the German chocolate pie, which has a toasty crust mounded with a silky chocolate-coconut-pecan filling.”

Pat-A-Cake Bakery hands down. They have moved from the old East Marietta Shopping Center to Ellijay. Their fudge pie is to die for. Edna’s in Chatsworth does have good pies also. I am a fan of their coconut creme.

Did someone say Wafflehouse? Bro, go to any grocery store and pick up a Edwards Pie. You can have a whole one for about 5 bucks.

I vote for Pat-a-Cake’s fudge pie, too. As a little girl, if I was good in the grocery store down the East Marietta strip mall, I would get a fudge tart — I’m still hoping that if I’m good, I’ll get more of their fudge pie. You can get it summer/fall at the Marietta Farmer’s Market (if you get there early); other times you can get their pie at Burger’s Market on Old Canton Road. Much closer than Ellijay! And don’t try to duplicate the recipe at home — I’ve tried for over 40 years with no success yet. Close, but something’s always missing.

Before they closed it would have been the lemon pie at Johnny Ray’s BBQ in Birmingham…and prior to that it would have been Mick’s Chocolate Pie…now, everything else is just a pale imitation at best *sob*….where have all the good pies gone ?

If you haven’t tried S&S Cafeteria’s Sweet Potato Pie you are missing out. I have gotten one every X-mas and Thanksgivings for the last 20 or 25 years. EVERYONE that has tried it says it is the best they have even eaten. Even had a lady come by A DAY AFTER Thanksgiving one year to see if I had any left. She wanted another piece. Never took a bite of pumpkin pie after finding the sweet potato pie at S&S. Best to call ahead to order it.

Also goes good with a tablespoon of whipped cream on top. Then sprinkle a little cinnamon on it.

Does Greenwood’s still not warm their pie slices before serving them? If so, that’s a huuuuge drawback in my book.

Y’all need to REALLY go to Southern Sweets off Rio Circle/Laredo Drive in Decatur across from the Dekalb Farmer’s Market. There is nothing in ATL like it. Period. Mrs. Nancy Cole and crew make the best pies in probably the Southeast.

Always loved S&S Cafeteria’s pies, too….their Egg Custard would find its way home with us in the form of a whole one, which would be doled out in smalllll pieces. Picadilly has a wonderful coconut creme pie.
