OUR PICKS

1. FLIP burger
AJC dining specialist Jon Horn says, “While FLIP Burger could win for best shake on creativity alone, with flavors like Cap’n Crunch and Foie Gras, the quality of ingredients and execution is outstanding. Newbies should start with a Nutella and Burnt Marshmellow shake, complete with bubbling liquid nitrogen.”

Steak N Shake, followed by Johnny Rockets, then Checkers. I’ve only had one milkshake from Johnny’s and it was at Six Flags. It tasted like the best milkshake in my life. Probably cause it was 95+ degrees outside. But hey, for $6, that milkshake better had been good.

I love Chick-Fil-A for everything else, but the milkshakes are horrible. I don’t understand how anyone can think they are tasty. they aren’t even good compared to other fast food chains like McD’s, Checkers or Arby’s. Steak n’ Shake is the next step up as they actually taste a little like ice cream. Meanwhile, Zaxby’s might have the worst fast food shakes .. down near the CFA level. FAR too sugary.

As for ice cream parlor places, Coldstone is hands down better than Breusters. Of course that may be due to teh fact I have gotten sick on my last two Breusters shakes (maybe bad milk added or something).

That being said, nothing at any fast food chaing beats the Blizzard or Frosty for a frozen treat. Pass up the shake and get the real treat.

I would love to try Zesto’s as I have heard some great things about their shakes.

Come On

June 20th, 2011

A requirement of being a milkshake is that it is made with real ice cream. HENCE Sheridan’s can’t be considered. Chickfila can’t either since it’s not real ice cream. I’d vote Bruster’s (Not Bruesters or Brewsters idiots) or Steak and Shake. Both places depend on who makes them. Some make them too runny some too thick. A good shake is one that does not move when you hold it upside down. I used to work at a ice cream parlor (will not say which one) and I had many of guests come and ask for me to make their shakes (and would walk away if I was not working that day).

I have to laugh at people naming fast food places here. Really? McD’s? CFA? (although I DO dig the peach shakes!). Steve at 2:27…. dude, I don’t know what you’re thinking. Chick-fil-A has GREAT milkshakes… not the best in the world, but definitely top five. But your opinion gets eliminated because you ACTUALLY compared Chick-fil-A’s shakes to McDonald’s, Checkers and Arbys!!!! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?

McDonald’s changed their mixture a few years back, and they are bland now and average at best. Arby’s is about the same, maybe a tad more flavor. And Checkers milkshakes are HORRIBLE. All artificial, the don’t taste real, and after five minutes, they start to break down into the coarse mix from which they started. Checkers is TERRIBLY over-rated as a food place, for ANYTHING.

Personally, I like Steak ‘n Shake and Brusters as two of my favorites, but I have ALWAYS loved the OK Cafe milkshakes… great dessert after a great meal.

My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,
And they’re like
It’s better than yours,
Damn right it’s better than yours,
I can teach you,
But I have to charge

I know you want it,
The thing that makes me,
What the guys go crazy for.
They lose their minds,
The way I wind,
I think its time

La la-la la la,
Warm it up.
Lala-lalala,
The boys are waiting

Saw a few folks talking about Miss Georgia – to this day the best shakes on the planet – used to get them at the Marietta location – now the home of the Big Chicken, it was a huge treat back in the 50s & 60s. Now – Frosty Frog in Hickory Flat (close to Canton) and Cheeseburger Bobby’s in Canton – their shakes are made with Frozen Custard and are the total Bomb…….. May need to have a shake tonight…

Hey Red, You are a little wrong. Miss Georgia Spinning Wheel, as it was called, was not where the big chicken is. That was Chick-Chuck and Shake and was part of the Davis Brothers Cafeteria Company. Miss Georgia was just down the street from the intersection of Fairground and Roswell St. in Marietta, about a half block towards Hwy 41. Now when I was a kid, we would go there every Sunday and get a shake. Then drive around Marietta looking at the sights. No traffic back then. Now that was in the early 50’s.

I feel sorry for you people who think McDonalds or CFA are milk shakes. They are not, they are soft ice cream dispensers made from a concoction of milk solids and other chemicals to taste. They actually pour it from a plastic bottle into the machines who freeze it to a soft consistency. Real milk shakes are, as Judy stated, are made with hard dipped ice cream, whole milk, then your flavor added (example real strawberries) then mixed to a thin mixture that will come through a straw without sucking your ears inward. Try sucking a Mickey D’s through a straw right out of the machine…HA

When I was a kid, quite a few years ago, Arby’s used to have a little nutmeg shaker sitting out that could sprinkle on your shake. Sprinkle nutmeg on top of a Jamocha shake, stir it in a bit, and you’ve got something amazing.
Add to that the fact that you can get a little bitty one for a dollar, and it’s a winner!

If I want a “real” as in something that, at some point, actually came from a cow and was not delivered to the restaurant in a tanker truck, the winner HAS to be Alpha Soda in Alpharetta…they still know how to make ‘em.

Steak ‘n Shake #1. Baskin Robbins #2.

Frozen stuff that oozes out of a machine is not a milkshake. It’s sad evidence of the dumbing down of our society that so many Americans truly believe that the cold premixed chemicals shrewdly marketed by McD’s, Chick-Fil-A, and Arby’s are actually milkshakes. Those things are to milk shakes was Sanka freeze-dried crystals are to coffee, what krabstix are to crab meat. A milkshake requires real ice cream, real milk and syrup, all blended by hand. Pathetic that so people voting for Best Milkshake don’t actually know what a milkshake is. I presume these are the same people who vote people into political office. Explains a lot.

Some lame nominations so far.

Wow, people don’t know great milkshakes anymore. Most of the comments here must be from people under 20 years of age.

Steak N Shake’s are good but not great.

Please, don’t mention a place that has fois gras milkshakes. Or whatever.

Johnny Rockets has the best in town that I’m aware of.

Not surprising that if you ask for a chocolate malt at many places these days, many places will use chocolate ice cream and chocolate syrup. Wrong. A chocolate malt is made of vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and malt powder.

Fast food restaurants have the best shakes??? You people are crazy!!! First of all, it’s not even real milk in any of these shakes. It’s some dairy concoction. Chikfila calls it ICEDREAM!!! It’s a dairy product people!!! Not real MILK!!! If you want a real MILK shake, go to Brusters. Best in Atlanta!! Especially when they have Peach Ice Cream!!!

These are the same people who say Varsity makes the best of anything. A fast-food, artificial frozen mix as the “best milkshake”? Are you kidding? It just goes to show that in the south, the more sugar you put on or in something, the better it will sell. Put sugar on a dog turd and southerners will line up to buy them, swearing they’re the best thing ever.

If it’s not made with real ice cream and blended in an oversized metal mixing cup, preferably with the extra served on the side of the glass, then it’s not a real milkshake. I like a lot of fast-food shakes (like Arby’s Jamocha and Krystal’s Banana Pudding MilkQuake), but they simply aren’t in the same category as a real milkshake.

Easy. The Counter on Mansell Rd. In Roswell. Agree with come on above. If it is not scooped into a mixing cup it is not a real milk shake. Milkshakes are my only sweet vice so I eat a lot and trust me nothing tops a Zesto Old Fashion. Just go in and say “Old Fashion” and they will know what to do. Vanilla ice cream with several squirts of chocolate syrup equals a tasty, not not heavy tasting, delight. Yummy, I want one now!

Chick fila banana pudding is delicious! Peach is good as well. Would love if they had Apple pie shake. Most casual restaurants charge $7 or more for a shake and adding tip the cost goes up. Plus most casual dining restaurants milkshakes I have bought use too much milk (cheap) and skimp on the ice cream! Steak n Shake costs less money than Chickfila but the flavors in their limited edition mistakes is weak.
