OUR PICKS

1. FLIP burger
AJC dining specialist Jon Horn says, “While FLIP Burger could win for best shake on creativity alone, with flavors like Cap’n Crunch and Foie Gras, the quality of ingredients and execution is outstanding. Newbies should start with a Nutella and Burnt Marshmellow shake, complete with bubbling liquid nitrogen.”

I’ve had shakes at almost all the places mentioned as well as at a lot of other places outside the state, and I have to say the best shake I’ve ever had anywhere was at the Grill in Athens. It is the best shake I’ve had anywhere and that includes old fashioned drugstore soda fountain shakes and at mom & pop places like the former Cream Pitcher in Robinson, IL. The Grill simply has the best milkshakes on the planet! (And no, I’m never went to UGA and I’m not particularly a dawg fan.)

Thelma,

It is summer officially tomorrow, so tell Chick-fil-A to get those peach shakes going! Don’t know if they’re the best, though.

I’ve got to go with a place that makes its ice cream on site – Bruster’s. New York Cheesecake or Chocolate Raspberry Truffle!

My favorite, handsdown is the Zaxby’s birthday cake shake without sprinkles. I could have one three times a day, especially with the chocolate on top.
When those are “out of season” my favorite is Steak-N-Shake’s Dark Chocolate shake. YUM YUM!

No one has mentioned Arby’s Jamoca Shake. Love coffee ice cream and unless you go to a “speciality” ice cream store, you will get, vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. Chick Fil A has added peach.

Arby’s Jamoca Shake rules!!!!

Evans pharmacy in old-town Conyers! REAL, old-fashioned, hand-made shakes and malts still made the same way they made them 60+ years ago!!!
I have to laugh at people naming fast food places here. Really? McD’s? CFA? (although I DO dig the peach shakes!). If you think that ANY chain place makes good shakes (including the ice cream joints) then you have no concept of what a REALLY good shake is!!!!!!!!!!! As far as chains, etc go though Zesto’s beats them all!!

Chick-Fil-A…banana pudding milkshake. I might cry when they get rid of it. I’m loving the milkshake elitists here who think you can’t enjoy a fast food chain’s milkshake.

Slotl: Someone did mention Arby’s Jamocha shake quite a while back; my brother loves those.

I like “Sweet Treats” on the square in Marietta. Mayfield ice cream makes everything perfect.

I’ve seen advertisements for the birthday cake shake at Zaxby’s – you folks are REALLY making me want to try that one!

In the mid and late 1960’s the vanilla shake at the Dairy Queen on North Decatur Road at Clairmont.

Everything I have had since then pales to insignificance.

Okay, I know we’re looking for the ‘best’ and all, and I really like Zesto’s (and all others mentioned – but really – friendly’s in the north is awesome). Anyway – have y’all ever had the milkshakes at QT? They’re incredibly reasonable and REALLY GOOD! Really!

There are some good nominees here, but flatly, the best inside the perimeter, by far, can be found at Chapman Drugs in Hapeville. Have a vanilla-peach two-scoop malt instead of waiting for one of those overhyped Chick-fil-A shakes.

Steve at 2:27…. dude, I don’t know what you’re thinking. Chick-fil-A has GREAT milkshakes… not the best in the world, but definitely top five. But your opinion gets eliminated because you ACTUALLY compared Chick-fil-A’s shakes to McDonald’s, Checkers and Arbys!!!! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?

McDonald’s changed their mixture a few years back, and they are bland now and average at best. Arby’s is about the same, maybe a tad more flavor. And Checkers milkshakes are HORRIBLE. All artificial, the don’t taste real, and after five minutes, they start to break down into the coarse mix from which they started. Checkers is TERRIBLY over-rated as a food place, for ANYTHING.

Personally, I like Steak ‘n Shake and Brusters as two of my favorites, but I have ALWAYS loved the OK Cafe milkshakes… great dessert after a great meal.

Steak ‘n Shake’s milkshake flavors are really good, especially the Cookies’n Cream. Chick-fil-A’s Peppermint Chocolate Chip milkshake is so good, however it’s only around at Christmastime. When I had the funds to afford it, I liked strawberry milkshakes at Dave & Buster’s.

OK Cafe.

Chic-fil-A should be completely disregarded since they don’t use ice cream in their milkshakes. Bleh. Very similar to their ice dream crap. Bleh. Why even bother?
