Best pickled vegetables

Originating in Athens, but available across the metro Atlanta area, Phickles Pickles are your pick for the best pickled vegetables (among those that can be bought in stores). Some restaurants serve the company's product, too. Photo courtesy Phickles Pickles.

YOUR PICKS
In stores and online
1. Phickles Pickles
You say, “Phickles Pickles are the best! You can find them at Alon’s and other fine foods stores. Phickles are handmade by a one-woman pickling dervish outta Athens. If you haven’t had her okies, you’re missing out.”

3. Preserving Now
4. TaylOrganics

In restaurants
1. Holeman & Finch
You say, “[Holeman & Finch's] Linton Hopkins is an expert at this. In a recent Simple Abundance cooking class, he talked about his use of pickled veggies in his restaurants and pickling stems & otherwise normally unused veggie parts. So yummy!”

2. Empire State South
3. Miller Union
4. Flip
5. (tie) The Hil and H. Harper Station

The menu at Holeman & Finch varies, but you'll always find items dressed with housemade pickled vegetables, like this pork belly atop creamy grits draped with bread & butter pickles. Photo: Becky Stein / Special

OUR PICKS
1. Holeman & Finch
The AJC dining team’s specialist in Southern and Neighborhood Fare Jenny Turknett says, “As skilled as Linton Hopkins is at vegetable cookery, it should come as no surprise that his restaurant leads the pack with its pickled vegetables. At Holeman & Finch, you’ll find pickled beets, garlic scapes, jalapenos and more, but the pickled green tomatoes are my favorite. They have the perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors. The pickled green tomatoes are served with the chicken liver pate, but I could eat them as my meal — or my dessert!”

Phickles Pickles of course! Those of us who have picked up our orders on the Phickles Porch know the time and love that go into every jar. We like to give them out as gifts.

Well, I may have one you’ve not heard of !?? I posted earlier today to may website: http://www.preservingnow.com. Check it out and let me know: Pickled Garlic Scapes. Amazing! I’m not in any restaurant but am soon to be selling our products in local Farmers’ Markets and independent markets (am in licensing process right now!). Am also teaching classes at Piedmont Park, see their website for dates and times. Am a tireless canner of pickled things, fruit butters and many other delectables! Lyn

I have never eaten pickled vegetables-fruit of any kind except at my house. Well, my late DGM; and I have her recipes.

Going to make some watermelon rind pickles. I have a recipe for Pickled Peach congealed salad–take that to church. I use left over brine from dill pickles for carrots sticks, fresh asparagus, whole green cherry tomatoes, and whole green beans.

Not easy to find them at any price. Homemade is always good. GOOGLE for recipes.

Adding to my previous comment: since you may never have had pickled scapes (see my website: http://www.preservingnow.com) I’ve a jar for you if you’d like to try!
