OUR PICKS

1. Restaurant Eugene
The vegetable plate at Restaurant Eugene is seasonal and typically has tastings of six or more vegetables served in little cast-iron crocks.
These fresh local vegetables are prepared simply and the vegetable is always the star of the dish — never overwhelmed by saucing or seasoning.  Even the most  vegetable-averse will be converted.

3. Watershed

4. Matthews Cafeteria

Matthew’ is good, but has terrible hours for someone across town. The Colonnade is good for vegetables and has better hours.

I definitely love Mary Mac’s vegetable plate. The restaurant is such a staple of Atlanta, and no one can go wrong with their amazing vegetables. Collards especially!

Greenwoods on Greens in Roswell. Bill Greenwood’s serves super fresh veggies and the biggest portion size in town… They even do a eggplant parm from with a organic tomato sauce…Just my one opinion.

Donnies on Clairmont Rd. At Buford Hwy. is the best place around for veg plate. You get large meat free servings that includes bread and a beverage for $4.50. Can’t be beat.

While I would normally say Matthew’s Cafeteria, I have to admit the vegetable plate at D.B.A. BBQ in the highlands is darn good (especially that grilled creamed corn).

Willingham’s Kitchen in McDonough. The food is melt-in-your mouth delicious. Vegetables are fresh (not frozen). These are the most flavorful vegetables you can find in the Atlanta area. Your plate will come with hoecakes hot off the griddle. Not only will your stomach be filled, but also your heart. Barbara Willingham is an angel living among us.

As a vegetarian, I have to be careful when ordering veggies from most mainstream (i.e. non-vegetarian) restaurants, as (ironically) many vegetable selections are not veg-friendly. After a few bad experiences, I tend to avoid them altogether. Season’s 52 has a nice low-cal seasonal vegetable plate, though. Too bad there isn’t a location more convenient to where I work or live.

Hands down, it’s Watershed. Anyone who has ever eaten the veggie plate there knows none could be better. However, it is expensive and probably will not win because not that many people will have had it.

Must agree with Maya – not all “vegetable” plates are vegetarian so I always ask very specific questions as some servers don’t know or don’t consider that a meat broth renders it non-vegetarian. Good true vegetarian eateries: Q’s in East Point, Watershed in Decatur, Greenwoods on Green in Roswell.
