You say, “If you want a real french fry, how is what 5 Guys does not quintessentially perfect? Real russet potato, fried in good fresh peanut oil until cooked to perfection (I ask for very brown), seasoned a little, served hot – steamy in the middle – sublime.”

OUR PICKS

1. Muss & Turner’s
The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “The beauty of Muss & Turner’s fries is the simplicity. The fries are cut fresh daily, seasoned simply, fried to crispy perfection, and served in a generous paper-lined cone. They don’t call for much in the way of dressing up, but you can’t go wrong with M&T’s Sriracha Mayonnaise.”

My wife and I agree – Goldfish at Perimeter Mall has the best fries we have had any place. Large enoug to be substaintial but not so thick they aren’t cooked all the way through. The right seasoning, probably just salt of some kind. Truely chrisp exterior, but the potato is still a little soft inside. And the length and thickness varies because of the way thay are cut so if you want a little more crunch, just pick a smaller piece. I think its like steak from a seaffood place; it is usually very good because you have to know how to grill fish (whuch is more difficult) and it carries over to the beef. In this case, you have to know how to fry fish and do Tempura and its refelected in the french fries too.

Best Overall Fries: TED’S MONTANA GRILL – Fresh-Cut, No Preservatives, Light-ish, Flavorful

Best Fast-Food Fries: FIVE GUYS – Fresh-Cut, Cooked in Peanut Oil, Cajun Seasonings (Optional)

The burgers at FIVE GUYS are inedible, but they at least do fries well.

Barker’s Red Hots should not qualify. The place is rarely open.

Zaxby’s fries are good. Same with Zesto’s fries -but they turn to concrete when they get even a bit cold. Shudder.

Wendy’s new fries are better than the old ones but still bland.

Five Guys fries are really expensive and really filling. In-n-Out fries are the prototype for that kind of fry and they do it better than Five Guys.

Boardwalk’s Fries in Sandy Springs are about the best you’ll find in Atlanta. Five Guys were good, and Cheeseburger Bobby’s were better until I found this place. Douse them in malt vinegar and old bay seasoning. You’ll be glad you did. And Three Dollar Cafe’s steak fries are amazing too, with their homemade ranch dressing.

Fast food fries: Waffle Fries at Chik Fil A
Simple restaurant fries: Brickery.(very straightforward fries with a middle of the road taste but nice crisp taste which won’t wow you, but will grow on you. The more I dined at this place, the more it grows on me)

5Guys: (best and worst): I have had some of the best fries at this play and some of the worst fries too.

Five Guys fries are great.
Don’t believe the haters.

Varsity fries are good when they’re cooked properly, but more times than not you get a greasy, soggy, mass of limp-ass fries…NOT GOOD. Same thing with their onion rings…when they’re cooked right they’re great, but half the time you get a big clumps of limp, soggy, greasy, batter…with onions.

FlipBurger has awesome fries. I’m a big fan of Zaxby’s (as far as fast food goes) as well and Johnny’s Pizza has surprisingly good steak fries (which seems to be a dying art). It’s hard to do french fries wrong — deep fried potatoes are almost always delicious.

I don’t know who has the best, as there are lots of good fries out there, but I know without one doubt who has the worst.

Burger King Fries are the world’s worst. That coating or paste tastes like that white paste glue you had in kindergarten. My dog leaves the room when I put them on the floor for him. Love those whoppers but have to go across the street to get some fries to go with the whopper.

MacDonalds??? In-N-Out fries better than Five Guys?? I guess everyone’s standards are different. Lived in Cali for a long time – ate many x at I&O. Mushy, greasy, and undercooked!! Del Taco? (How to avoid a colonoscopy) Why people take something so basic, and complicate and screw it up is beyond me. You can do all kinds of lovely things to potatoes. But if you want a real french fry, how is what 5 Guys does not quintessentially perfect? Real russet potato, fried in good fresh peanut oil until cooked to perfection (I ask for very brown), seasoned a little, served hot – steamy in the middle – sublime. I’m Irish. I know potatoes. & dude, their burgers are as fresh and delicious too. NO – I DON’T WORK FOR 5 GUYS!

Barker’s Red Hots on Windy Hill is open all the time. Their fries are great and the main draw is the hot dogs cooked on real wood (natural lump) charcoal.

Duck fat is not from Mars. Get a jar at Williams Sonoma or roast a duck you bought frozen at, believe it or not, Wal-Mart. It’s the most delicious way to fry by far.
