YOUR PICKS
1. Barker’s Red Hots
You say, “Barker’s – No one even compares. Water pulls the flavor out of the dog. Barker’s are grilled over real charcoal. Try their signature dog!! Dogs made by a 142 year old meat packer out of Buffalo, N.Y. Awesome rings and fries and their Bomb Italian Sausage – unbelievable. Wash it all down with a Loganberry and you died and went to heaven.”

OUR PICKS
1. Brandi’s World Famous Hot Dogs
The AJC dining team’s Popular Eats specialist Jon Watson says, “Open only for lunch, you will always find this small diner-style hot dog shop in Marietta packed to the brim with regulars, and for good reason. Their spicy chili dogs are the epitome of a Georgia-style hot dog, and the best that I’ve had in the city.”

Since the Varsity will win this one and I truly love them as well, I will put in a vote for Barker’s on Windy Hill in Marietta. The best grilled hot dog since Ollie’s Trolley and Lum’s which was steamed in beer….man, am I old!!!

Costco has the best hot dogs-big and juicy weiners! I don’t know why people always rave about the Varsity’s-theirs are skinny, definitely needs condiments to add taste, people just buy into the hoopla I guess; even QuikTrips’ are better. Also Brandi’s hot dogs are like vienna sausages-so mushy…Yuck! So if I had to eat a naked dog, it’d be Costco; but a dressed dog would be Chicago Delights =D

The Varsit? Are you serious?!!! Atlantans obviously have no taste in hot dogs! I’ve been here for 20+ years and have never enjoyed a Varsity dog, though I have tried. Sam’s Club’s Nathans big dog, or Costco. That’s a shame. Atlanta is definitely in need of a great hot dog stand!!!

Is this a serious poll? How could you possibly conduct this poll in Atlanta (or the state of Georgia for that matter) and not say the Varsity (Although, Nu-Way Weiners in Macon wouldn’t be a bad choice either, but still not up there with the V).

Mike’s chicago style hot dogs are the best here in Atlanta. but lets face it Atlanta is not a hot dog city, just like it’s not a pizza city. so of course people from here are going to say Varsity unless you been to Chicago and had the Vienna hotdogs and New York’s Nathan’s hotdogs. ther is really no places to compare in Atlanta .

I must admit that the Sam’s Club Hotdog is pretty darn good, and their pizza is great as well…. Varsity is more of a feel good hot dog, its a tradition here that we grew up on… Dairy Queen and Sonic have a pretty good dog as well. This might sound out of proportion but try the Kroger brand beef franks (bun length), they are very underrated!!!!!

I’m born and raised in Atlanta. I agree the Varsity is a landmark. Cheap fastfood for a long time. To say they have the BEST hot dog… a steamed oscar myer with the cheapest cafeteria white bun… give me a break. Re-read the question. It would be nice to have a place with real sausage and real ingredients to load it up with, fact is, we don’t have one inside metro Atlanta.

Being from the “South side of Chicago”, the true mecca of Hot Dog Restaurants. And being of Polish desent, I believe I am a good judge on why Hot Dog Heaven in Woodstock should be strongly considered. Great variety, authentic Vienna Hot Dogs, great small town personal service. The Varsity??? surely you jest; why not just put ketchup on a Hot Dog, same end result…it would taste terrible!

Hotdog Lover

I am born and raised in Georgia. I married a Chicago girl 31 years ago. So speaking fairly and from experience, I will proudly tell you that the north cannot touch us on Fried Chicken, sweet tea, cobblers, buscuits, and many other foods.

However, I concede that no pizza in the south comes close to any I tasted while living up there. Ditto on hotdogs! I love chili, slaw, and Chicago style dawgs all equally. But just speaking of the wieners, we simply don’t make them with the same snap here in the south.

As far as the “tried and true” Varsity…well I tried them, and truly ended up in the privy. What total junk!!

America’s Top Dog on Chamblee Tucker Rd just inside the Perimeter. I just had the best dog I’ve had since I left NY 3 years ago. Anyone who thinks the Varsity, Costco or Sam’s has the best they just don’t know what a good dog is all about. And not only do they have the best dogs, they offer you 40 different toppings at a self service topping bar so you can do your own thing. Name one other place in town where you can do that. And order the onion rings, best I ever had. My wife had the big Q she said the best dog she’s ever had.

Rivals hotdogs in Loganville are the best of what used to be called za “southern dog”. A truly good slaw dog is an artform. it is privately owned, so are always open to suggestions and will custom make a dog to your liking. Hotdog eating contests and good old fashioned hospitality. Mike’s in Sandy Springs knows what they’re doing, and the quality is there. Hot Dog Heaven in Woodstock is great too – they serve Vienna dogs – the real deal!

I’ve had dogs from the Varsity, Mike’s, Skips, Barkers, Costco, The Earl, and several other local places too numerous to name. America’s Top Dog on Chamblee-Tucker, hands down, has the best quality, best variety, and best tasting hot dogs in town. They also offer a huge variety of toppings if you like to dress your own dog. Varsity does not have good hot dogs only good history. Georges Deli has a good grilled dog with all the trimmings. Yeah Burger is not bad, Whatever the stand was that was in front of the GA Pacific building downtown (Barkers?) was good and flame kissed. Good dogs MUST be grilled on a flat top or open grate. Without char they are a weak weenie. You flaccid Varsity lovers should recognize this phenomena. Only exception is boiled in beer then grilled, if one can spare it. (the beer that is)

Barkers – No one even compares. Water pulls the flavor out of the dog. Barkers are grilled over real charcoal. Try their signature dog!! Dogs made by a 142 year old meat packer out of Buffalo, NY. Skip’s in Avondale Estates. I’m an Atlanta native and the Varsity can be summed up in one word: OVERRATED. In all honesty, a pack of Nathan’s hot dogs and a can of hot dog chili from the grocery store is better than a Varsity hot dog.

I know everyone says Varsity from here in Gerogia but they simply do not compare to a Chicago, a New York, or especially a Sahlens hot dog in Western New York. Currently the best is a chili slaw dawg at the Varsity. To those newcommers who have gotten sick there, it is because their system is just being cleansed of all that pretend food from up North.
I have to agree with the other old timer, the Yellow Jacket on North Ave. had the VERY BEST. Their toasted buns were great.
Once again, I will say, if you don;’t like it here, Delta is ready when you are or our Interstate highways do run in both directions.

Before I get hate comments, Barker’s serves a pretty good dog as does the place in McDonough. That said, there is nothing of tubular merit in town, at least that I’ve had the pleasure of eating. First, a good hot dog has to still have the casing, bite is all important. Sabretts is the best and there are other good regional brands. The bun isn’t as important; but, it should be steamed, just not to the point of mush. Stuff for it? NO KETCHUP or CATSUP unless the diner is under the age of ten; this is non-negotiable. After that, it’s all what you’ve had and like or love. In my order of love: 1) NYC street dog with mustard and the red onion sauce. 2) A Detroit Coney Island. 3) Many of the places in Los Angeles (Pinks is on the bottom of the list). I’ve never been able to appreciate the dogs in Chicago or Cincinnati. Feel free to hate on me – Varsity hot dogs are close to inedible. The only time they should be eaten would be when you feel like a Krystal – you’ve indulged more than you should and need to put something in your stomach, too far gone to show your face in a real eatery.

You ATL natives don’t get out much if you think the Varsity has the best hot dogs. Best ones I’ve found around here include Bobby G’s, Guido’s in Kennesaw, Barker’s Red Hots, and most recently, kudos goes to America’s Top Dog. I too did my brief stint with Varsity dogs after I moved here from up north, but I can truly say that there are much better dogs out there, and I’ve had hot dogs in many places all over this country. Heck, even Skin Thrasher’s in SC beats the Varsity!

Rivals Hotdogs in Loganville is with out a doubt the best place for hot dogs EVER!!! I grew up in Atlanta and ate regularly at the Varisty and at Zestos. I always thought they were the best…but that was until Rivals came to Loganville and then the Varsity and Zestos became hot dog history.
Rivals has the BEST hotdogs and the owners are the friendliest, nicest people you could ever meet.

Well, I don’t know who has the best hot dog in Atlanta (being that I just moved here). I would say that the Varsity has good frankfurters, but it’s more of just a good fast food joint than a place that specializes in hot dogs and sausages. I really miss Rosamunde (http://rosamundesausagegrill.com/ if you want to check them out, but they’re in SF) which had hot dogs and sausages from just all over, and they really wet Bay Area mouths and kept them coming for more–I really loved a hot beer sausage, smothered in sour kraut and onions, with some peppers. I had some good hot dogs in Chicago, but they have to much fixings and not enough just meat for my tastes. If anyone knows where you can get a good sausage dog, some beer sausage or a good andouille, please post! If they’re in Atlanta or close, I’d love to visit. As for lots of the places that people are saying, well…you can get just about the same thing at home, and that is NOT what I go out to a restaurant for.

Barker’s on Windy Hill in Marietta is by far the best hot dog I have had in ATL. I have nothing against the Varsity–like their chili dogs–but Barker’s is just a totally different experience. The fact that they use a quality hot dog (imported from Buffalo) AND cook over charcoal makes all the difference.

Brian ,
I have been praying for a door to open or a door to shut and to show me a direction for months now so that i might retain a dream I have put my everything into . I announced i was closing my doors to my family, friends, and patrons monday of this week . A very difficult decision I assure you . One of the most emotional decissions of my life . In our short lifespan I have been touched by alot of great people and been blessed to touch others more than I ever imagined. When I announced the closing I was flooded with emails and phone calls and messages that were so inspirational and I began to see things in a different light . On my menues and website I have always had our mission stated as follows and sorry about the capital letters it was only format I had to copy from.About Us
To have a dream is good.
To have a dream and share it with your best friend ( my wife ) is even better, but to have a dream become reality…Awesome!

Our mission…our dream…We, by all accounts, are “Foodies” !
My wife and I, love food of all variations, from all corners of the world imaginable. Always on the search.. to try and find anything new and different from that “Same ‘OL Same OL” ! Even with the old time favorites, I find myself twisting and tweaking a recipe, wanting to give it that SPARK to make it my own. Never going by the book…sooo…with this consuming passion for Food. My wife and I decided to:

Make our dream a reality. What a Venture!

We began our journey by talking with family members…friends…neighbors
Even complete strangers! ( Anybody who would listen to us! )

We want to know: “What is your favorite memory of ‘ a hot dog ‘ ?”

We were so hungry for any infomation that might help us. We soaked it all in! Guess what! We were amazed to learn that just about all of the “Grown Up” folks told us about a hot dog place they used to frequent as a child. What we found even more enlightening was when they went back to recall thier memories, we noticed that thier faces lit up with excitement and a warm glow…Always…probably, just as they did years ago when thierparents turned around adn looked at them in the back seat of that ‘41 Studebaker’ and said “Kids, we’re headed for the hot dog place!” Seems like these places have all but disappeared these days. Few and far between now. We felt that all the input we received was givenwith such fondness and gave us a much greater vision of the restaurant we had envisioned in the beginning. It opened our eyes and our hearts. It made us want to be one of those places that puts a twinkle in the eyes of all our young people. Now and in the years to come, we want to help create good, healthy, fun-filled memories and strong school spirit for all who enter here.As well as fill your “Tummies” with some goodOl’ Dawgs!

In the end our mission is to bring a quality product with the freshest ingredients ( staying away from the canned and frozen ) in order to gain the respect of the young and the wise taste buds in this community!

To the future, respectfully, we are Chuck & Kayce
As well as our lovely children: Destiny, Brittany, amber, Kodi, Kayle
and last but definitely not least…Charli!

Then a cust came in and told me about your remark as well as others that were supporting me and I read thru them pages one thru seven . I have been waiting on the AJC to do a hotdog vote for years and then it happens the week we announce our closing maybe more than fate . Basically I will not be closing Rivals I will find a means I promise you. Rivals will remain open I may not be the owner or maybe I will but the end result will be Rivals will continue to be more than a restraunt it will continue to build memories……God Bless and thank you . Chuck aka to my patrons Mudcat . .

For those who think Rivals is one person, you have never lived in an up and coming town. Our sports are spectacular, and the business first advertised on a local message board. We’ve been waiting since 2009 to be able to rate our favorite place. We just happened to see the ratings board around the same time. I know the majority of those people and they are the reason Rivals was so successful. Ours is a community atmosphere in Loganville. Even our businesses have a homey touch. Goes to show there are trolls even on an AJC . LOL.

Rivals in Loganville may not have the best hot dog in the area, but the owners of it sure do have a great knack on how to increase their advertising without spending one red cent. Just post on an internet message board that you’re going to be closing your doors and the Loganville locals will come back for one last hot dog at Rivals. Then the Loganville locals will try to spread the word, far and wide to everyone they know to drop in at Rivals to have one last hot dog from there before they close. Then the owners of Rivals post a link to this web page on the Loganville message board so their few Loganville locals will come to it in droves to show their support with words instead of cash at the counter.

Now, several days after announcing he was closing the doors at the end of the year, Chuck announces that because of the local support he will reconsider closing the doors.

Chuck, I have to hand it to you. You run a close second to P.T. Barnum.

You just have no idea what me or my family have encountered this passed year . This decision took months to make not a day . Those close to me I have spoke with the matter about of course . But if you think a couple of days sells make enough of a turn in my pocketbook to change the direction of rivals your sadly mistaken . I have simply been blessed with opinions and views and comments that have inspired me to not give up YET. This is about individuals voting for a favorite hot dog . Why not just vote instead of bashing people with false accusations my friend . I may not own Rivals in a week I may loose it all , I may not , I’m simply praying for a direction .

I think it’s pretty good to be able to keep doors open in a small town in this economy. The economy does not show favorites. Metropolitan areas have many people, small towns do not. Larger areas have numbers, small towns have community. No one should assume anything, and negative, personal comments should be ignored and have no place on a review board unless they simply don’t like a product. Personal comments reveal a lot about the posters who have not walked a mile in a man’s shoes. Keep up the good work, Chuck and family. Yours is the most original business that I’ve ever seen and Rivals adds a great flavor to our growing town.

Because I don’t eat beef or pork, and therefore, I have never visited Rivals for a meal (though I live in Loganville and visit that shopping center weekly), I will refrain from derogatory comments about the establishment.

However, I just thought of an interesting concept: How about a hot dog joint that sells hot dogs made from other ingredients (turkey, veggie, etc.) instead of just beef? I think that concept would work wonders in a town like Athens, or even Loganville. I always have a problem going to The Varsity because of this. I eat my hot dogs and brats at home because I can find turkey (for me) and veggie (for the wife).

How about serving domestic draft beer as well? Just a thought, and here’s to hoping the mom and pop establishments succeed…

I am from New York and worked downtown for 9 years. The food including the dirty water dogs was great. I make my own. Start with an all beef hot dog and boil it for 5 minuits. Set the pot on simmer or lower and leave them in the water. Preheat your oven to 220 and after about 20 minuits it is time to make your dog. Tear off as many sheets of foil for the amount of dogs. Place buns out of the bag on the foil and put a wet dog in each. Add mustard and preheated Saurkraut ( you can buy the Sabretts onion sauce at Publix if you want to add it) and roll up each dog in the foil and put it in the oven for 15-20 minuits and they are done. Just like you bought them off the street and brought them back to the office!

CJ’s Hotdogs in McDonough makes the best hotdog I have ever eaten by far!! The Varsity is an Atlanta tradition and I like their hotdogs but the CJ’s hotdog is much. much better! Their toasted hotdog bun and their chili is awesome!!!!!!!!!

I didn’t know they even had a “fish” dog. maybe brian should try it. Sounds like Rivals is pretty innovative. One time they posted a survey on our message board asking for original suggestions. many new varieties came out of that sampling. I’ve always said, anybody can make a pizza, BBQ or any type of food. What makes it successful is having products that others don’t sell. When I go to rivals, I always get either a fried pie or two with my meal. If I just wanted hotdogs, I could go to Dairy Queen, but I want fried pies and good service – so I go to Rivals!

Barkers Red Hots is by far, by far the BEST hot dog in Atlanta. The Varsity hot dogs are just skinny ball parks with store bought buns, it’s just mystery meat. Let me tell you about a place that has a real charcoal grill, cooks EVERYTHING to order. Your fries aren’t made and waiting 10 minutes before you arrive. They are made as you order them. It’s seriously the best place around.

My vote goes to America’s Top Dog. Great Dogs & Sausages. The best Burgers in town. Crispy fresh cut fries and absolutely the best onion rings in the universe. I love topping my dog or burger at their 40 topping bar with everything from different chilis to homemade slaw (the best), chow chow, sweet onion relish, giardinara salad and the list goes on and on. Why didn’t someone think of this
before???? I believe the owner when he says they will have 12 stores open in the next 4 years. This guy knows what he’s doing and his staff takes his lead. For only being open 3 months in not such a hot location, America’s Top Dog has already developed a large loyal following which grows daily.
Good luck to them and count me as one of those loyal followers. Varsity who???

CJ’s in McDonough is the best! The Varsity has good dogs but their onions rings aren’t anywhere close to being as good as they were 20 years ago. Just out of curiosity who makes the hotdogs at Rivals and CJ’s? I went to American Hotdog in Chamblee and it might be the best dog in Atlanta. He has an entire fresh condiment bar, of 40 toppings, to add to your hotdog. The hotdogs are a few different varieties. Sabretts and a very old hotdog company (150 years) out of Maryland.

These responses are just further proof of the “Lack of Culture” in Atlanta. Why else whould anyone asked to pick the “best” hot dog select the Varsity hot dog? Why does Georgia, and specifically Atlanta, stay in the trap of steadfast tradition and never reach out to improve its image? You all know there are better hot dogs in Atlanta than the totally mediocre Varsity dog. Wake up, Atlanta!

If you havent had a Hail Mary from Rivals Dude your missing out if your a Dawg fan . Two 1/4 pound All beef dogs deep fried topped with That awesome homemade chili , yella mustard , onions , shredded cheddar , That tangy sweet PINK slaw that rocks the tastebuds and oyster crackers on the side with a order of southern taters – hand cut french fries no frozen fries smothered in the chili and cheddar . I drive 45 minutes for my fix hey Rivals open one in Athens Please . Oh and the atmosphere is as the name implies Ga bulldog Ga Tech Ga acc sec stuff fill the walls as well as the local rivals two or three highschools cool place great food Yea Hail Mary and Rivals gets my vote.

The Varsity may be the most overrated hot dog house i’ve ever eaten at. they are the plainest, worst tasting, soggiest hotdogs ever. I don’t see how anyone can call it the best. Just because it’s a tradition doesn’t make it anywhere near the best. Actually, none of it’s sandwiches can be quantified as the best!!!

What makes a great restaurant? The food, the ambiance, the service – BARKERS scores big on all three. Try the original dog topped with their famous hot sauce and vadalia onion slaw with an order of fresh battered onion rings – nothing better PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surely the editors will invalidate all of the crap postings for Rivals and CJs. Spamming an online forum, especially so obviously (you idiots do see that your posts are timestamped, right????), is simply annoying and makes me actively NOT want to try your pathetic offerings. I hope you close permanently and are never allowed to open a business again.

As we all know, food really does taste better cooked over charcoal. Barkers cooks all their dogs and sausages over lump charcoal just the way you like it right in front of your eyes. They cook everything in an open kitchen which is the cleanest kitchen in town. If you have never been to Barkers you really don’t know what you are missing there is nothing like it. I love the original red hot!!!

Varsity hot dogs are tasteless tubes of unknown animal origin. But emotion and tradition certainly will garner the VArsity a lot of votes.

Serious hot dog lovers will generally opt for natural skin weiners. I haven’t eaten at every hot dog grill, but Mike’s Dogs in Sandy Springs puts out a darn good Vienna beef product with great buns and toppings. You can actually taste the seasonings in the hot dog…..not that it matters to some folks.

If you just look back over this page prior to Eds comment and pages prior Barkers has more votes than either cjs or rivals and no mention of them being cheeters or spamming .Seems it would be simple to figure out what establishment this individual owns . The AJC has a means of keeping it fair when nominations are tallied I assure you. Hope all this negativity directed at some of these establishments dont come back to bite you .

Lauren

Anyone that says they won’t try food from an establishment and hope they close because of comments on a forum is cruel and cutting off your nose to spite your face. Rivals has a fantastic hot dog (I love the chili/cheese) and the most incredible fries. Don’t even get me started on owner, Chuck Sasser. He ran out into the parking lot to grab us one day after we had eaten there JUST to give my son a piece of candy and thank us for coming. Another time we were in there and my son wanted a 50 cent bouncy ball out of a machine. My husband and I didn’t have any change on us, but Chuck had heard the whole thing. He handed my son two quarters for that ball.
So I ask, where else can you eat fantastic food and be in the presence of such kindness? I assure you that Rivals is it.
I truly pity the haters.

I haven’t read all the posts and won’t , but it seems we ventured outside atl to the Nu way. If you want to include good dogs, go to Americus and try Monroe’s “best dog bitten by man”. Classic red weiner which you can get with all the traditional toppings. Hard to eat $5.00 worth with their inexpensive prices.

Nu-way is GOD awful. Made it a special point to check them out when I was in Macon. I went to the original location downtown, where do I begin – the service and the ordering is a complete mess, the hot dogs if you call them that are neon red I never in my life saw anything like it the dogs where so bad I couldn’t even finish them. NU-WAY is nasty and I can’t believe it is even being mentioned here.

I grew up in Macon close to a Nu-Way. I liked them but they are like the Varsity. More about atmosphere than the Hot dogs. The dogs are nothing special. As far as taste, you just can’t beat CJ’s as I stated above. My second choice would be Yellow Jacket in ellenwood.
