Is it an appetizer or is it dessert? It doesn't really matter when it's as tasty as the fried goat cheese with honey and pepper at Midtown's Ecco. Photo: Elissa Eubanks, eeubanks@ajc.com

OUR PICKS
1. Arancini with citrus and fennel pollen at Cakes & Ales
AJC Food and More’s Popular Eats blogger Jon Watson says, “No trip to Decatur’s Cakes & Ale is complete without an order of the Arancini. These deep fried balls of cheesy risotto, seasoned with a hint of fennel pollen and citrus, are delightfully addictive. Don’t be surprised if you send your server back for a second round once they quickly disappear from the table.”

As referenced by Bama State Fan at 4:47pm on 12/6 – Fried green beans are pretty tasty. The only place that I know of that serves this is Estoria in Cabbagetown. Delicious, though some of the taste experience is lost in the thick cigarette smoke.

Fried pickles at the Blind Pig Tavern in Athens. Unlike a lot of places they slice them thin so they are crispy and don’t pre-batter them. Fried creamed corn dodgers are also excellent.

Parts always taste better fried. I especially like chicken lips and hog wings. We cook them on the fire out in the wild while snipe hunting.

And it’s not officially here yet. Fried foods taste good when it’s cold weather. Okra but without batter and not cooked hard. I really like fried pickled peaches with cream cheese stuffing. That’s one of my favorites and discovered by my nanny as a child, Ms. Mamie Lou, who was experimenting at the time. Try it, you’ll like it.

Wow, apparently the saying about frying any and everything in the south is true. I love the fried pickles at Ms. Katie’s Side Board in Stone Mountain Park. As for the rest, I’ve never even heard of fried Coke, Oreos, Twinkies, Snickers, etc. I am sure they probably taste good, but considering that none of them are good for you to start with why would anyone want to add on more fat by frying them? Wow!

My son is a boy scout and they fried biscuit dough to make donuts and potatoes to make fries at camp. Once those were done, they started experimenting. He said the deep fried teriyaki beef jerky and fried Butterfingers (chocolate melted off, so only the peanut butter part) were delicious. The Starbusts and Skittles didn’t fry very well…

DB BBQ is over priced, BBQ dreck. The award Matt got for his chili must have come from the chef over at the US Prison system. Watery and hot, with bits of gristle, mmmmm. Dryed out $10 pork sandwich with all the fixin’s. This place has to deal with too high rent and it shows.
