Best salad bar

The vast selection stretches into the distance at Sweet Tomatoes' salad bar.

The vast selection stretches into the distance at Sweet Tomatoes' salad bar.

1. Sweet Tomatoes
You say, “Sweet Tomatoes by far. Most choices and so fresh. Their Chinese Chicken Salad is wonderful – even my husband eats it and he doesn’t like salad” and “Sweet Tomatoes is great as they always have a very large selection of soups and chilis….also always very clean and well kept.”

2. Whole Foods Market
3. Fogo de Chao
4. DeKalb Farmer’s Market
5. Jason’s Deli

We say “This is a seriously meat-centric place and it isn’t cheap, but the salad bar is an enormous oasis of nourishment with a touch of naughty indulgence.”

In terms of decadent? Fago de Chao. Expensive for just salad but whenever I go I’m tempted to just stick to the salad course.

Golden Corral is good, so is Whole Foods – both are pricey, but good. Golden Corral is all you can eat; Whole Foods – priced by the pound.

Tie: Whole Foods (the roasted garlic cloves – even cold – melt in your mouth) and the Dekalb Farmer’s Market.

Runner-up: Sweet Tomatoes (Alpharetta). Their “Joan’s Broccoli Salad” is very tasty.

There are salad bars and then there are Salad Bars. To a non-vegetarian, the best-tasting sides (tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad, the blanched crispy green beans) taste better because they are seasoned with things like butter, sugar, oils, rich nuts, mayonnaise, etc.

Whole Foods offers these taste-friendly sides as well as offering really nice raw greens, such as arugula, spinach, maple-leaf lettuce, radicchio, shredded cabbage, Romaine lettuce and a wide choice of dressings from which to choose – from the most spartan olive oil and vinegar dressing to the most fattening but delicious Caesar.

Whole Foods and Dekalb Farmer’s Market have your standard salad bar fare as served at any fast food place but exceeds the common iceburg lettuce ‘n’ tomato salad with a few stale croutons tossed on a glob of 1000 Island dressing (I like 1000 Island, by the way).

To please everyone (or as many finicky eaters as humanly possible), a good Salad Bar should have good greens, nuts, seeds, and sprouts for the rabbit in us, plus maybe some fresh hummus and tabouli for a more Mediterranean flavor, but should also have cold meat salads (chicken, tuna, turkey) and rich pasta salads for those who want to eat, uh, you know, meats and carbs.

I like it all, and Whole Foods and the Dekalb Farmer’s Market have totally tasteless raw things AND fattening, yum-yum food. Something for everyone (hopefully). Bon appetit.

I love salad bars and have since I was a kid. They totally take me back.

Jason’s is one of my favorites for everyday, but F de C is pretty good for special, too.

I also like Ruby Tuesday, I have never had Jason’s Deli salad bar but it looks good from what I can tell. Sweet Tomatoes is just OK & a bit pricey for a salad. Golden Corral & Ryan’s are also good.

Soup & Salad at Akers Mill Shopping Center near Cumberland mall.
This has to be the most sanitary salad bar in metro Atlanta.
The soups are delicious and the dining tables are made from old cast iron pedal sewing machines.
**when using tongs at a salad bar do not toss the tongs back into the food item. Your hands are dirty, the person before you touching the tongs hands were dirty etc…instead place the tongs UP RIGHT in the food item or set them to the side on a hard surface.

I vote Jason’s Deli. By the way, I eat at salad bars all of the time, and I haven’t been sick in like 10 years. You germ-o-phobes are weird people, there is so much more to worry about in life than germs at a salad bar.

Fogo has the best, but can’t do that everyday so I’ll say Ruby Tuesday’s Golden Corral and Sweet Tomatoes for freshness and variety. Whole Foods and Harry’s is good, but by the pound.
