Mama's Pizza in Alpharetta, established in 1979, has a large and loyal group of followers who turned out in force to support their beloved pizzeria. Many of Mama's fans got the word about the vote from the restaurant's website and Facebook page.
YOUR PICKS
1. Mama’s Pizza
You say, “Having traveled extensively throughout the U.S., I have sampled many of the best pizza joints available. As a charter member of one of the best informational sites available, pizzatherapy.com, I can state unequivocally that nothing in Atlanta compares to the likes of Pepe’s or Sally’s or Modern in New Haven, several in New York or a few others from D.C. to L.A.
I’ve eaten at several of those nominated herein, but my favorite continues to be Mama’s in Alpharetta. I’ve patronized Jimmy’s place for more than 20 years and have never once been disappointed. No frou-frou, just simple, plain adherence to the basics – great crust, sauce and cheese. And very generous toppings.
It’s somewhat remote for in-town Atlantans, but do yourselves a favor and give it a try if you’re seeking no-nonsense N.Y. style pizza served by a smiling, attentive staff. I’ve patronized this place for more than 20 years and followed their various incarnations in Roswell, Canton and Alpharetta. I’ve entertained my family, staff, relatives and friends many times and never once been disappointed.”

OUR PICKS
1. Varasano’s Pizzeria
Food and beverage writer Bob Townsend says, “Jeff Varasano is a mad scientist of pizza. So what if he doesn’t use traditional Italian ingredients or wood-burning ovens? The proof is in the great crusts and refined flavors of his pies. One taste of a thin, puffed-up, yet perfectly crispy pizza topped with an unlikely but wonderful combo of sweet caramelized onions and sharp Emmenthaler cheese says it all.”

Antico Pizza Napoletano. The real deal – - not a speck of phoniness anywhere. Their San Gennaro pizza is not only the best in Atlanta, but one of the best pies this ex-New Yorker has had anywhere. Their pizza is also consistently great; perfect char and a hint of sour in the dough; fresh, primo ingredients. The vibe is more kitchen than restaurant, but it’s fun to sit in the back and soak it in while listening to Pavarotti or Louis Prima. Thankfully, there’s a lot of pizza to like in Atlanta these days (newer places like Varasano’s and Vesuvius and old standbys like Fellini’s, Rosa’s, Fritti and Cameli’s), but there’s only one to love – Antico.

Fini’s pizza was the closest thing to NY pizza in the area. This is the best I could get being new to the Atl. I walked in and ordered and had it ready in 20 minutes. If i could only bring “New Park Pizza or 2Boots Pizza” from New York City. This was closest thing to NY pizza that I have tasted in the south. Even better than those parlors in Florida where New Yorkers retire and open a business.
This isnt one of those pizza parlors that say its NY style because it is thin crust. I’m not even sure what that means. It takes a lot more than thin crust to make a NY pizza You can have thin crust and it still taste average or too thin and crunchy. NY pizza is all about the taste of the sauce, cheese and the foldability (term for slice size).
On service since they hae e few hot chicks. I will go back next weekend when it is pizza time again. I’m dying to see the 28″ pie. I’ve already e-mailed the family in preparation for when they come down to visit.
Based on other reviews I’m looking forward to going to the Duluth Hwy location since people are bashing Old Peachtree for not having a family member there and stating quality has gone down. If this pizza is poor quality I will take it all day long and have to try the pizza at the neighboring location that is allegedly better!

VESUVIUS on Edgewood. I’ve lived in ATL for nearly 30 yrs and just discovered them earlier this year. I haven’t had pizza from anywhere else since. It really is spectacular.
Everybody’s is still good too, also Grant Central. Fellini’s remains decent and Fritti is good for small gourmet pies, but for the traditional, real deal big greasy slices, Vesuvius is the hands-down winner.

Antico takes the win for sure. I don’t think anybody else is close. Next I would list Varasano’s and Moto Bene. (I haven’t tried Fritti.)
Funny how a few years ago Everybody’s, Fellini’s, Mellow Mushroom, etc., would have been high on my list, but suddenly the new places make them seem completely dated. (They can still turn out some good pies, just not in the same league as places like Antico and Varasano’s.)

I would have to say Varasano’s and Antico are the best I’ve had. I can’t believe people still vote for Fellini’s…it may have been the best 10 years ago before we actually got a few good pizza joints in Atlanta.

Nancy’s sucks. Antico is overrated. Max’s is good, but parking is a problem. Vesuvius is good, but a homeless guy gave us a hard time when we were leaving. Oz is good. So is Everybody’s. My wife and I have found a lot of good places. Haven’t found the best yet.

To be able to judge you had to have had both NY and Chicago style pizza as a baseline. Secondly, elaborate pizzas like hoghead chesse BBQ chicken dumpling pizzas shouldnt count, those are sideshow specialty pizzas that you cant get by the slice anyway.
That being said, Fellini’s gets my vote, but you all have me curious about Antico. Will have to give theirs a try.

But realized no one has said anything bout lil old slice in castleberry hills. yeah i know it’s “old” now, but still – they have good ‘za. Love how all the “foodies” keep creaming their pants over antico… like napoli style pizza is the only pizza that exists. Wake up y’all. Antico may have the best napoli style pizza -but that doesn’t mean that we have to elevate napoli style to the single best style in the world. Love how impressionable y’all are.

Thin Crust – Shorty’s in Tucker has innovative combinations of toppings and the wood oven gives everyone of them a smoky flavor. Hearty crust- Dagwood’s in Norcross continues to have the freshest toppings around and the crust is as good as it gets with just the right amount of salt for flavor.

We (metro Atlanta) still lack pizza places that serves excellent SLICES. All the better places serve only whole pies and pizza just costs a lot around Atlanta (why is that?).
Rosa Mia (I think this is the old Mama’s), Johns Creek. Really good pies. Expensive.
Antico – Very good but over-rated by the gushing faddish crowd. Also expensive.
Blue Moon, Windy Hill – Only been once, a lunch, but the pies were good. Expensive.
Alessio’s (Old Alabama Rd – No. Fulton) – Terrible service, decent NY style pies. Order pies to go (uncut), then stick in the oven for a few minutes when you get home.
Mellow Mushroom (Alpharetta and Johns Creek) – Okay to good pies with whole wheat crust. Wish they were more consistent in quality. Pricey.

Big Pie in the Sky in Kennesaw used to be good, but they recently changed their cheese and their pie is now bland and tasteless. Their atmosphere has also degenerated into Chunky Cheese’s without the Whack a Mole. We’ve stopped going and have found Ray’s N.Y. Pizza on Chastain to be much better. Cheese has a good taste, the sauce is just right, and it is a nice, crispy thin crust. There’s more to pizza than just size. The atmosphere is also more adult.

I can’t say enough about Hearth Pizza Tavern in Sandy Springs, and to be honest I’m shocked it hasn’t been mentioned more. They have a standard menu, but it switches seasonally and they also offer “specials of the day” – and their beer/wine list is smaller, but it’s carefully picked out, quality list.
The service there is phenomenal – we’ve been going there about 2x a month since it opened, and even on a day when we get an off server, it’s still fairly good at it’s worst. Throughout the course of our time there, we almost always get a friendly nod from the manager/owner. My only complaint is the wait area/host stand is awkwardly positioned by the door, but when the food it that good, I could care less!

sorry, folks from New York. New York style pizza is not good-too soggy and floppy. I have been there 30 times over the last 10 years. Yeah, great, you may hit on some good pizza in 1 out of 10 places.
Grant Central used to be great-now soggy, like new york style
Camellis on Ponce(in Kroger shopping center) is great-huge slices.
Jaggers (”atlanta” style) is great to me. Some people say too greasy. But they use three diffrent cheeses-maybe that is why. Great chewy(not bready chewy) crust. Try popping a piece of leftovers in the toaster the next day-it will be even better the next day.
I like blue moon, Baraonda, Verasano’s was good, fellinis and Neighbors in VA actually had some good pizza-nice and crispy.
Now to try that new place(sorry dont remember the name) on tuesdays at the new midtown farmers market on ponce-a traveling brick oven pizza place that is supposed to be awesome.

In no particular order,
Taste of New York, Marietta
Bella’s in Smyrna
Zucca in Smyrna
Rosa’s, downtown ATL
Oz is very good but not authetic enough for me
Johnny’s is good in a pinch, surprisingly.
The above helped ease my transition to Dixie since I was missing some of my typical foods.
Not to put down the others, but I compare the above to the real deal, NYC pizza. After eating pizza for over 30 years in my native NYC, I consider myself somewhat of a pizza snob when it comes to many of these alleged “NY style pizzas.” The above get my stamp of approval! Alas, authentic garlic knots are more elusive…. Off topic, but Rita’s lemon ice is pretty close to a good Italian ice, which hits the spot after a good pie. While I’m off topic, a good tip for my fellow expats, hit 400N for BB’s Bagels, the real thing and another good dose of homesickness remedy! Some of the goodies of NYC without the killer rents and taxes.

Without a doubt, Mama’s Pizza in Alpharetta is TOP NOTCH!! Only the best quality and freshest ingredients are used. They use real cheese, not the processed stuff, and they pile on the toppings so that you can actually see and taste them. They may have changed location over the years, but they have never compromised the quality or the taste. It’s a family owned and operated business, and everything is made with heart for their extended family–the customer.

To all the transplants from NYC. There is lots of great pizza everywhere. I’ve been to NYC and they have great pizza, but just like here, it’s not all great. If you take the same ingredients (nothing grows in NYC), take the same chef, and cook the pizza in the same type of oven, you’re going to get the same result. There are so many transplanted Yankees here that some of them make truly great pizza. Many of the natives make great pizzas. I’ve had great pizza in KC.
I can make the same pecan pie or mustard greens if I bring the stuff and the handed down recipe to NYC. I’m just saying.

Mama’s Pizza in Alpharetta, GA.
After being highly recommended by quite a few colleagues of mine that Mama’s Pizza was the real deal, I thought I would stop by and try. On the exact same day I stopped there to try it out for the first time, Good Day Atlanta was there doing a story. After I inquired on what Mark Hayes and his crew was there for, they stated they were doing a story on the best pizza place in North Georgia. At that point, I was assured I had found me a permanent pizza & salad location. Well over two years later, Jimmy and the staff has been exceptionally great and have become great friends. If you are ever in the area or work in the area like I do, please, stop by and try out, you won’t be disappointed!

Having traveled exensively throughout the U.S., I have sampled many of the best pizza joints available.
I’ve entertained my family, staff, relatives and friends many times and never once been disappointed. And I still manage to enjoy their Monday/Tuesday lunch specials weekly.

If you want REAL New York style pizza, then Mama’s on Old Milton Parkway is the only place to go.Pete and Jimmy have been turning out great pies since the 1970’s.Their ingredients are topnotch, and the crust has just the right amount of crunch. It’s a no-brainer.

Mama’s Pizza in Alpharetta was the best pizza in the Atlanta area in 1979 and still is today. They’ve moved around a few times since then but taste and quality of their pies has never changed. Family owned and operated businesses don’t stay around long unless they have a truly superior product like Mama’s pizza.

I actually prefer Fritti to Antico, but these are clearly the two best. I will also nominate nostalgic favorite Everybody’s and the original Caqpozzi’s in East Cobb is pretty great for non-gourmet pizza eats. Mellow Mushroom is the best of the chains, but is not nearly up to the level of these other places.
Anyone who said pizza hut, dominos, or papa john is an idiot.

Mama’s Pizza Alpharetta- I had my first birthday party 19 years ago when they were in the roswell Mall. The only place that I can truely say know how to serve quality pizza and subs and salads. New York style keeps this southern girl coming back to Mama for a real home cooked meal. I’ve tried all the rest but by far Mama’s is the best.

Avondale Pizzeria, New York Style baby. Cons: The quality of the pizza can change drastically from one day to the next…….but closest to New York Style that I’ve ever seen is Rosa’s Pizzeria, They’ve got the same ovens as NY pizzeria’s, the shop is designed the same (long counter, ovens behind cash register as soon as you enter, seating in the back), they’ve even got the yellow grease on the wax paper. Cons: have to climb over too many homeless people to get to the resturant.

Mama’s Pizza in Alpharetta has the best New York style pizza. Growing up in New York, we know pizza. I usually pick up a pie there in Alpharetta where I work and drive 45 minutes to my home in Suwanee. My wife and I don’t care that the pizza is slightly warm. We love it anyway.

MAMA’ PIZZA IN ALPHARETTA!!!!!!!! I have recently moved to VA, & on this last visit back home to Atlanta, my best friend (who knows her pizza!!) introduced me to MAMA’S PIZZA, & I fell in LOVE with it!! The fresh ingredients (REAL cheese, bread and sauce) and the atmosphere (customer service, music, and take a few to watch them make your pie) have made MAMA’S PIZZA the best pizza I’ve ever had!!

This vote is a joke. The ajc should do something about fraudulent voting. If you’re going to have a poll you have the responsibility to make sure it’s accurate but then the ajc has never had fair or accurate reporting on anything that’s why they’re in the toilette.

Several of our customers brought this to our attention. To all that think its sad, desperate, absurd, obvious and fraudulent, I think it’s great to see all our loyal customers take their time to vote for us. We are too busy to sit around and create hundreds of emails just to vote for ourselves. We let our customers know there is a voting for best pizza in Atlanta through our email list so if they wanted to vote that was their choice. We as well as many other pizza business owners work very long hard hours and kudos to all for getting nominated and recognized for the hard work that we all put in on a daily basis.

Relax people. Just because one or two pizza places are NOMINATED 500 times times does not make them winners. They will end up on a ballot with maybe three or four others so people can vote on their favorite. That’s the time that ajc needs to verify that the votes are legit of they have that ability.

Some have suggested that Zucca’s popularity in this poll is over stated by their online fans.
Think about it, Zucca’s owners must have 500 relatives or some very happy customers to generate the level of passionate votes viewed on this site. With 4 successful restaurants and a Zagats rating of 21 ( Buckhead Life’s Groups ritzy Pricci is only slightly higher at 24), Zucca is a very worthy contender for top pie in Atlanta.

I honestly don’t care if people are “faking” nomination or not. But, I’m amused that people will state that because there are a couple of hundred posts for some obscure pizza place in the suburbs it’s an accepted indicator of the size of their fanbase. Uh, you can sign up for as many aliases as you would like on this site. As a matter of fact, somebody with a lot of time on their hands, say a pizza shop owner with no customers, could make nominations, under different aliases, all day long.

Alpine Bakery and Pizza in Alpharetta, yes they just moved from sorry Roswell to Alpharetta so they could expand. As a NYer best pizza in the south, Actually it’s better then some of the joints back home. Folks if you think chain pizza like Little Azio or Mellow Mushroom is good pizza you should stick to frozen Totinos from Publix.

Mama’s pizza in Alpharetta is smack your MAMA good! I have been to Versano in Buckhead and Antico downtown. While I appreciate both of their pies, I have to give Mama’s the best slice in Atlanta. It is different than a Versano or Antico type pizza. I prefer their crust and sauce. Hands down, the most delicious pizza I have had in all of Atlanta…his salad is quite good too! Try the house dressing, you won’t regret it.

From New York City to Georgia and points south Mama’s Pizza is truly the finest ,cheesiest, moistest, ingredients available,(no skim milk cheese here to cut cost),all home made sauce with a x- large touch of love inserted in each and every pizza. I grew up with what I thought was the best pizza ever in a small city in Connecticut,( a bedroom community highly influenced by NYC), a 60 mile trek from NYC and patronized an Italian restaurant called the Old Oak all family owned all through my teen years and beyond but since coming south and finding Jimmy & Pete’s ,”Mama’s Pizza” I have found a new home.Real NY style pizza with that “buttery tasting” crust,mm-mm, Jimmy really cares about every pizza, slice or dinner he puts out.And how about the SUPER nice help that brings your dinner! Oh, and I might mention the CLEAN restrooms.Good luck in the coming years Jimmy,Linda and Pete.

Just looking at that picture from Varasano’s make me realize why these polls and blogs are full of nonsense. That is NOT pizza. It’s FRU FRU.
It’s just like the Beer Yuppies that think you have to have some sort of extravagant crap in your beer for it to be good beer. Or the ones that put down all American beers just because they say Americans can’t make beers.
Or the sub-sandwich poll from before where people were putting down basic subs in favor of subs with gaucomole, spinach and who knows what.
People, please understand one thing. Eating or drinking unusual or ‘hip’ designer foods does not make you look ‘cool’ or ‘important
or whatever you want to call it. It makes you look like an idiot who simply can’t enjoy the simpler things in life because you are afraid to just be yourself. Chill out, relax, and don’t worry about what others think. It’s ok to admit you like the non-designer brand stuff. It really is.
