YOUR PICKS
1. Mama’s Pizza
You say, “Having traveled extensively throughout the U.S., I have sampled many of the best pizza joints available. As a charter member of one of the best informational sites available, pizzatherapy.com, I can state unequivocally that nothing in Atlanta compares to the likes of Pepe’s or Sally’s or Modern in New Haven, several in New York or a few others from D.C. to L.A.
I’ve eaten at several of those nominated herein, but my favorite continues to be Mama’s in Alpharetta. I’ve patronized Jimmy’s place for more than 20 years and have never once been disappointed. No frou-frou, just simple, plain adherence to the basics – great crust, sauce and cheese. And very generous toppings.
It’s somewhat remote for in-town Atlantans, but do yourselves a favor and give it a try if you’re seeking no-nonsense N.Y. style pizza served by a smiling, attentive staff. I’ve patronized this place for more than 20 years and followed their various incarnations in Roswell, Canton and Alpharetta. I’ve entertained my family, staff, relatives and friends many times and never once been disappointed.”

OUR PICKS
1. Varasano’s Pizzeria
Food and beverage writer Bob Townsend says, “Jeff Varasano is a mad scientist of pizza. So what if he doesn’t use traditional Italian ingredients or wood-burning ovens? The proof is in the great crusts and refined flavors of his pies. One taste of a thin, puffed-up, yet perfectly crispy pizza topped with an unlikely but wonderful combo of sweet caramelized onions and sharp Emmenthaler cheese says it all.”

Antico Pizza Napoletano. The real deal – - not a speck of phoniness anywhere. Their San Gennaro pizza is not only the best in Atlanta, but one of the best pies this ex-New Yorker has had anywhere. Their pizza is also consistently great; perfect char and a hint of sour in the dough; fresh, primo ingredients. The vibe is more kitchen than restaurant, but it’s fun to sit in the back and soak it in while listening to Pavarotti or Louis Prima. Thankfully, there’s a lot of pizza to like in Atlanta these days (newer places like Varasano’s and Vesuvius and old standbys like Fellini’s, Rosa’s, Fritti and Cameli’s), but there’s only one to love – Antico.

I always see people say “hands down” after nominating their favorites in these blogs. And I always think their generally is enough competition where no place wins hands down. However, when it comes to pizza, Antico is hands down the best Atlanta has to offer.
