OUR PICKS

1) Sublime Doughnuts

Food and beverage writer Bob Townsend says, “Even if you don’t crave doughnuts, Sublime’s crazy-cool creations will capture your imagination and tingle your taste buds. Fried with care, glazed with the likes of dulce de leche, or filled with fresh strawberries and whipped cream, these are decadent delicacies for gourmands. The A-Town Cream, plumped with rich custard and covered in Callebaut Belgian dark chocolate, is fast becoming a local culinary legend.”

No one’s mentioned the Red Velvet Cheesecake – and man, I HATE cheesecake – but if I ever did the show “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” — I’d have the red velvet cheesecake from Fox Bros. BBQ in Little 5. That has to be the most amazing, orgasmic epicurial experience of my life. It takes Southern Red Velvet to a whole new level. It’s creamy, complex, nutty and off the charts! PLEASE people. DEMAND it (they are weird about their desserts – only serve the good ones on weekends). And enjoy! Oh, and if you have to have something besides sweets, get the brisket sandwich (on Thurs. and Sat. – the best days) with (ask for it) Wing sauce. And their smoky wonderful cornbread with honey butter. And, better tater tot’s than Zesto’s. And, believe it or not, their Frito Pie is the best I’ve ever had, because their chili really is that good. Seriously, I love Fox Brothers, and I go there as often as I can find a parking spot on the weekdays. But I have to make a special trip on the weekends for the Red Velvet Cheesecake. (Why, Fox Bros.???)
