Harold's beloved Brunswick stew

YOUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

You say, “Harold’s. After over thirty years of eating all manner of BBQ in the South, there’s no better. It’s so good I should say it again: Harold’s.”

2) Old Hickory House

3) Fox Bros.

4) Fresh Air

5) Wallace BBQ

The Brunswick stew at Harold's with a few treats to go along with it. The cracklin' cornbread is a must.

The Brunswick stew at Harold's with a few treats to go along with it. The cracklin' cornbread is a must.

OUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

Dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman says, “A big bowl of tomatoes and corn, with tons of shredded meat and a hint of spice, just like my father used to make. Warm, never hot. And no potatoes or beans, and that’s just as it should be.”

2) Hometown Barbecue

3) Fox Bros.

4) Community Q

5) Dreamland

For someone wanting the recipe, my husband worked their in high school 20 years ago and said it was pretty much everything left over from that day (pork, french fries, sides, etc, ground down and put in some new broth). Gross, but yummy!

I have been to most of these places and they dont know how to make brunswick stew. I have won 2 cook off,s and a resturant does not take the time to make good brunswich stew and most people have not tasted outstanding stew so they settle for a cheap brand. my stew the best in the world hands down wil;l do a blind taste test any time with these stews. all pure crap.

Harold’s by far. Amos’ at Hwy 369 and 372 is pretty darn good. There used to be a place in Avondale Estates called Henslers. To die for. Old South uses bbq sauce. Shanes is nasty. And Nick and Jim’s is just about the grossest thing I’ve ever seen. If you must do a chain, Slopes is ok.

Go to Melears in Fayetteville and get order of stew with pork in it along with a pulled pork sandwich. Wonderful. Harold’s Stew is watery to me and they sure are stingy with their cracklin’s. When I make it at home, I put a full cup to to ingredients to fill two 8 inch Lodge Cast Iron Pancake Griddles – Lots of crust, Lots of cracklin’s. In Northeast Georgia on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, the Barbeque Shack is very good with one refill on slaw and stew and you can order pulled pork or chopped.

In Metro Atlanta, there are only three viable choices for Brunswick stew: Harold’s, Old Brick Pit in Chamblee, and Old Hickory House in Tucker. All three of those are co-equal number ones in my book. Everywhere else has problems, either too thick, too chunky, or not enough tomatoes.

Those of you saying “Shane’s” or “Fox Brothers” – my god, please stop embarrassing yourselves by displaying your complete lack of barbecue and Brunswick stew knowledge.

I have to agree with Tom about yankees choosing Shane’s or Jim & Nicks. Both of these chains serve a homogenized soup-like stew made by ex-McDonalds employees, which is neither southern or good. You can add Slope’s to that list as well. My rule for barbeque is that if it ain’t been in the family for at least two generations, it most likely is not worth mention.

I meant to mention…whataya mean sayin’ that Burgoo is akin to Brunswick Stew? That stuff is nothin’ more than what it’s named – hamburger, gravy and potatoes (or something starchy, I’m not always sure what) in a mixture that absolutely earns the name ‘goo’ You might as well say that every kind of ’stew’ is the descendant of the Irish version…not in this part of the country.

Up until 2006, I have lived in Georgia all my life and have tasted many bowls of genuine Brunswick stew. I now live in Kentucky, and have tried this “burgoo’, and I have to say that it’s not even remotely related to the Brunswick stew I have known and loved all my life, except for the color. It reminds me of a very expensive bowl of Campbell’s sirloin burger soup. In fact, I believe they make a bundle out of just opening a can of soup and charging 10 times the price for it. Further, as an expert on true Brunswick stew, I’m insulted that burgoo is even included in this article as a “version” of Brunswick stew. They have some pretty good BBQ here, but it begs for a bowl of real Brunswick stew to be served with it….not this “burgoo” stuff.

I love BBQ, and all things associated with it. I traveled to the stewbilee in Brunswick last year and tasted 50-60 different variations from around the state, and I rarely pass a bbq joint I don’t stop and check out while traveling – and by far, the winner in my book was Mrs T’s, a local competition cooking team. I don’t think they have a restaurant or anything, but it’s a local guy here in Atlanta (I wish I could remember his name, I just remember he was located in the Atlanta area). Anyway, if you ever see him at a bbq cookoff, or catering an event, stop by and see if he has any mixed up…. it’s great stuff ~

Appears that we’ve got us a bunch-a ‘experts’ around here. Got to say I’m glad that the AJC ran this cause there’s clearly a lot of places I haven’t been to yet and intend to. But I do want to say that while there are plenty of variations on what I’ve known as Brunswick Stew around, most of ‘em just don’t measure up. Shane’s a non-starter…and even Fox Bros., Sam and Daves and Community BBQ don’t serve what should be the ’standard’ for BStew. And as much as I love Old South – been eatin’ there since the Llewallyn’s opened it in ‘68 – and don’t get me wrong, I love the stew too, but it clearly has a ‘tang’ that just ain’t what, again, I think Brunswick Stew should be. No, Harold’s – admittedly I haven’t been there in almost a year, but I can’t believe they would have allowed it to tank as, at least, one has pointed out – is, in my mind, the ’standard’. It better be cause their meat ain’t gettin’ it – unless you order outside-sliced…then you’ll at least get some flavor even if you’re gonna be chewin’ on it a while…and while I’m on it, Williamson’s may have something going for it, but ever since I went there right after they opened ever how many years that was ago, ordered an ‘outside-sliced’ plate and got a strip of blacked meat about the size of half a hot dog and challenged ‘em on it only to have them look at me like I was ordering sushi or something…needless to say, I ain’t been back to try anything.

Never had Harolds. Tried Dean’s once and didn’t care for it. Wallace’s and Fred’s are good but my pesonal favorite is Old South in Smyrna. Not to mention you get a big ol’ hug when you walk in the door!

It all starts with pork cooked the right way – that is the basis for the stew. Therefore, Harold’s and Slope’s are automatically excluded because their pork is like what my mom used to roast in the oven – no crust, no pinkness, entirely white. I have never been to Shane’s and never will because they use electric cookers.
The best in town – Wallace in Austell, The Old Brick Pit in Chamblee. To repeat, it starts with the pork and those two places have the best pork in Atlanta as well.
What they sell as stew at Sprayberry’s in Newnan is pretty darn tasty, but the consistency to it is kind of like what is served on a Sloppy Joe.

On my way to Statesboro in the morning. Lunch will be Brunswick stew at Vandy’s. There are some good stews to be found in the ATL, but nothing like Vandy’s. I always buy a pint and freeze it in small portions to dole out carefully when I am back in the city. How lucky I was to grow up with such great regional food.

There are many variations. There used to be a place called Choo Choo Bar-b-que in Camden County that was real good. Twin Oaks in Brunswick doesn’t suck either. As far as city stew(usually chunkier and stock based) goes some good options are Fat Matt’s and of all places Bar-b-cutie in Woodstock. Not bad for a chain

Sorry to break the bad news to the poster who likes Poss in a can (so did I), they were bought out by Castleberry and there is no more Poss bruns2ick stew.
Having been raised on the best stew, Old Hickory on Northdside Dr., all other pales in comparison. All the “stew” out there that I have tried has too much tomato and/or ketchup in it.
Stew should be just that, nice and thick with meat, not thin, watery and full of tomato as a filler. That’s nasty soup in my book.
Gotta make a trip to Dunwoody for Old Hickory, thought they were gone forever.

I don’t think he mean anything by it but it was strange he spill on his shirt then. All Brunswick Stews in the Metro are basically soups with chipped pork thrown in as a garnish. Real stew is what some people call “hash”. It’s beef, pork, chicken ground up and cooked down (along with some other veggies). Dean’s is the closest thing to it in the Metro. Go to Thomson (Neals / Poppa’s Best), Harlem (Neals), Crawfordville (Heavy’s) and Augusta (Sconyers) for real Brunswick stew.
