Harold's beloved Brunswick stew
YOUR PICKS
1) Harold’s
You say, “Harold’s. After over thirty years of eating all manner of BBQ in the South, there’s no better. It’s so good I should say it again: Harold’s.”
3) Fox Bros.
4) Fresh Air
5) Wallace BBQ

The Brunswick stew at Harold's with a few treats to go along with it. The cracklin' cornbread is a must.
1) Harold’s
Dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman says, “A big bowl of tomatoes and corn, with tons of shredded meat and a hint of spice, just like my father used to make. Warm, never hot. And no potatoes or beans, and that’s just as it should be.”

Wallace’s BBQ in Austell GA.
My mother craved this stew when she was pregnant with me. I’m know 54. Mrs. Wallace would bring her some almost every day.

Old Hickory House has had the best stew since I was a little boy back in the 1940’s, much better than these other places, and I’ve eaten at most of them. Another good stew is at J.R.’s on Peachtree Industrial Blvd. In the final analysis, though, it’s all a matter of taste and preference.

I have a place called the Blind Pig near Stark close to Jackson Lake. I stopped there by chance and had the bestI have ever had. Before then I was a Fresh Air in Jackson or Mad Dogs in Conyers. Give yourself a treat and try it.

Around the metro area, several mentioned are all very good. But I have always thought that Williamson Brothers had the best with Wallace a close second. But the best I ever had was at the Blackwater Grill in St. Simons Island. It was what you want out of stew….chunky, tangy and has that rip of tomato that turns it up a notch.

There is a lot of good stew out there and I can’t tell you who has the best… but I can tell you who has the worst: Shane’s Rib Shack. I don’t know what he serves but it is NOT Brunswick stew.

Have to agree with Paco. Heavy’s BBQ in Crawfordville ( I-20 east towards Augusta) is the best ever. Family owned for decades. Only open Friday thru Sunday. They know how to do stew!
