DXbbq0201a 2

Harold's beloved Brunswick stew

YOUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

You say, “Harold’s. After over thirty years of eating all manner of BBQ in the South, there’s no better. It’s so good I should say it again: Harold’s.”

2) Old Hickory House

3) Fox Bros.

4) Fresh Air

5) Wallace BBQ

The Brunswick stew at Harold's with a few treats to go along with it. The cracklin' cornbread is a must.

OUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

Dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman says, “A big bowl of tomatoes and corn, with tons of shredded meat and a hint of spice, just like my father used to make. Warm, never hot. And no potatoes or beans, and that’s just as it should be.”

2) Hometown Barbecue

3) Fox Bros.

4) Community Q

5) Dreamland

Good reference on Melears in Fayette. Haven’t eaten there in a dozen years, but it was great back then. I say if it’s a chain, it’s not real stew. Sprayberry’s, Fresh Air, Shane’s, Slopes, Dreamland just don’t cut it. I think I ate my weight in stew at Swallow in the Hollow while I was pregnant. Their Texas toast just does it in for me….

Old Hickory House uses liquid smoke. Get it together people, go buy some Castleberrys from Kroger.

Old Brick Pit in Chamblee is the best in Atlanta. That’s where I go for the best brunswick stew. Harold’s is a distant second.

Sprayberry’s in Newnan…not the new one next to the interstate but the original that has been there since 1926. Alan Jackson was a waiter there,U.S. Presidents to Governors stop there and it is just an all around great place! Best brunswick stew around!!!

Old Hickory House in Tucker for sure. The one in Dunwoody is good, too, but the one in Tucker has the best and made by the best chef: Greg.

I have tried most everyone mentioned and in my humble professional judge’s opinion, Harold’s is head and shoulders above the rest. Plus the cracklin cornbread, puts you right into Heaven…. None better, no where !!!!

Wallace’s in Austell and Hudson’s down the road in D’Ville. Old Hickory House WAS the best years ago. They would grind the outside charred pieces of the pork and use it as a base for their stew like file’ in gumbo. YUM!

No. 1 Holcomb’s Barbeque in White Plains is convenient to Lake Occnee;
No. 2 The original Fresh Air in Jackson;
No. 3 Andy’s Barbeque in Eatonton. These folks have their recipes down!
Enjoy!

Shane’s has good Q, but NOT stew. Pippin’s in McDonough is right along side Fresh Air in Jackson. The only I’ve had better is “Old Clinton’s” in Gray, Ga.

Fresh Air USED to be the best in the business but went to hell when sold out and has never fully recovered.
Now, for who ever posted Buckner’s, Shhhhh! Don’t tell them it is on the table, all you can eat and absolutely the best out there. Let’s keep this a secret!

The Hickory Pig in Gainesville, GA. It’s got a brunswick stew that is meaty, tasty, and more well-balanced than a Russian gymnast. They’re only open on Wednesday through Saturday, but it’s worth the wait. “Chain” stew is not stew, it’s FILLER. (shudder!)
