Best Brunswick stew

DXbbq0201a 2

Harold's beloved Brunswick stew

YOUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

You say, “Harold’s. After over thirty years of eating all manner of BBQ in the South, there’s no better. It’s so good I should say it again: Harold’s.”

2) Old Hickory House

3) Fox Bros.

4) Fresh Air

5) Wallace BBQ

The Brunswick stew at Harold's with a few treats to go along with it. The cracklin' cornbread is a must.

OUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

Dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman says, “A big bowl of tomatoes and corn, with tons of shredded meat and a hint of spice, just like my father used to make. Warm, never hot. And no potatoes or beans, and that’s just as it should be.”

2) Hometown Barbecue

3) Fox Bros.

4) Community Q

5) Dreamland

If you like taters than Dreamland.

If you don’t than it’s gotta be Williamson Bros. in Canton.

I vote for Swallow at the Hollow in Roswell – especially with their Texas toast. Hickory House in Tucker is my 2nd choice. For someone wanting the recipe, my husband worked their in high school 20 years ago and said it was pretty much everything left over from that day (pork, french fries, sides, etc, ground down and put in some new broth). Gross, but yummy!

Holy Smokes in Buford has the best, not counting my own personal stew.

Kudos to Steve Cowart for the old Sweat’s BBQ reference. Man do I miss that little spot that used to be off of I-16.

Well if it's gonna be that kinda party, Ima dip my...in the stew

The Col. got it exactly right…Harold’s, and THEN Poole’s in Elijay. I can’t believe I forgot about Poole’s. They def. have solid stew.

Harold’s, nobody else is even close when it comes to stew. Fox Bro for the BBQ, but Harold’s for the stew. Also the only place around still serving cracklin corn bread.

My favorite is Slope’s in Roswell – it’s a nice thin stew pureed in a blender, don’t have to worry about pesky chunks of tomatoes, corn or meat.

Harold Scott’s House in LaGrange, GA. The absolute best you will find anywhere. I have had B-stew in just about every state in the South, and this is #1.

Williamson Bros. BBQ in Marietta or Canton. Nice sweetness to it that keeps the acidity down and a good mix of meats and veg.
2nd choice is Scott Bros. BBQ in Cartersville on Tenn. Street.

This is shameless I know, BUT………. the best brunswick stew (REAL hoghead stew, if you are southern enough to know about it), was back home in south Georgia at our family restaurant…..(no longer operating)…so everything today (for me) gets compared to that !!! (and not many quite make the grade)…shameless, I know…..

I have been to most of these places and they dont know how to make brunswick stew. I have won 2 cook off,s and a resturant does not take the time to make good brunswich stew and most people have not tasted outstanding stew so they settle for a cheap brand. my stew the best in the world hands down wil;l do a blind taste test any time with these stews. all pure crap.

Harold’s by far. Amos’ at Hwy 369 and 372 is pretty darn good. There used to be a place in Avondale Estates called Henslers. To die for. Old South uses bbq sauce. Shanes is nasty. And Nick and Jim’s is just about the grossest thing I’ve ever seen. If you must do a chain, Slopes is ok.

For Brunswick Stew – Harolds. Also, if you order the large BBQ pork plate, they give you a large stew. What a bargain. It was good 20 years ago when I first went in there and it was just as good last Friday. Sometimes change isn’t good!
