Harold's beloved Brunswick stew

YOUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

You say, “Harold’s. After over thirty years of eating all manner of BBQ in the South, there’s no better. It’s so good I should say it again: Harold’s.”

2) Old Hickory House

3) Fox Bros.

4) Fresh Air

5) Wallace BBQ

The Brunswick stew at Harold's with a few treats to go along with it. The cracklin' cornbread is a must.

OUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

Dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman says, “A big bowl of tomatoes and corn, with tons of shredded meat and a hint of spice, just like my father used to make. Warm, never hot. And no potatoes or beans, and that’s just as it should be.”

2) Hometown Barbecue

3) Fox Bros.

Old Hickory House in Tucker. President Carter used to have it flown up to Washington when he was in the White House.

SHANE’S? You’ve gotta be kidding? Where do you get steak, the Waffle House?

Harold’s is easily the best AND you can get some damn fine cracklin’ cornbread to go with it.

Wallace in Austell, Hudsons in Douglasville not far behind. Brunswick stew should not be a variation of a vegetable soup, which is what all the franchise restaurants serve. Its not the same.

If you like Shane’s…hate to break it to you…but you have zero credibility in any food-related discussions.

If you haven’t had the stew at the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club in Little Five Points you are missing the boat big time. One of Atlanta’s best for sure.

Fresh Air in Macon had the best. Sadly, as snooty as I am about chains, Hickory House’s was my 2nd favorite. I made a big batch during a tough stretch and have not been able to eat it ever since. I miss liking it, though.

Pig N Chick by far the best I’ve had in Atlanta. The Pit in Chamblee has good BBQ, awful Brunswick stew. No flavor.

There’s this place on a road up in the mountains somewhere that has the best Brunswick Stew I ever tasted – you know it – it’s on a corner where two state highways come together – it’s a log cabin type building – there’s a river behind it.
