Harold's beloved Brunswick stew

YOUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

You say, “Harold’s. After over thirty years of eating all manner of BBQ in the South, there’s no better. It’s so good I should say it again: Harold’s.”

2) Old Hickory House

3) Fox Bros.

4) Fresh Air

5) Wallace BBQ

The Brunswick stew at Harold's with a few treats to go along with it. The cracklin' cornbread is a must.

OUR PICKS

1) Harold’s

Dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman says, “A big bowl of tomatoes and corn, with tons of shredded meat and a hint of spice, just like my father used to make. Warm, never hot. And no potatoes or beans, and that’s just as it should be.”

2) Hometown Barbecue

3) Fox Bros.

There are many variations. There used to be a place called Choo Choo Bar-b-que in Camden County that was real good. Twin Oaks in Brunswick doesn’t suck either. As far as city stew(usually chunkier and stock based) goes some good options are Fat Matt’s and of all places Bar-b-cutie in Woodstock. Not bad for a chain

to be honest, I don’t think I have ever had a bad bowl of Brunswick stew. it’s the type of food that is good because everybody’s recipe is just a little bit different (like chili). it’s like pizza in NYC. as the saying goes, “it’s like sex – even when it’s bad, it’s still pretty good!”

The Rusty Nail on Buford Highway & Druid Hills hands down. Harolds is good but more like a soup.I don’t get up there much but Pooles in Ellijay is pretty good. But none compares to The ‘Nail.

The Old Brick Pit in Chamblee without a doubt the best BBQ place people never talk about. Their B-stew is heaven in a bowl!

Sorry to break the bad news to the poster who likes Poss in a can (so did I), they were bought out by Castleberry and there is no more Poss bruns2ick stew.
Having been raised on the best stew, Old Hickory on Northdside Dr., all other pales in comparison. All the “stew” out there that I have tried has too much tomato and/or ketchup in it.
Stew should be just that, nice and thick with meat, not thin, watery and full of tomato as a filler. That’s nasty soup in my book.
Gotta make a trip to Dunwoody for Old Hickory, thought they were gone forever.

I like Benny and June’s brunswick stews. THey have some corn in it and they have good icetee. But when I went with coworker they was rude and say you eating brunkswich stew AND fry okra? I said I was and they all roll there eyes and smile. Then this one guy spill his stew on his shirt when I said my neice was in a Young Jeezy video and he say who is Young Jeezy? I don’t think he mean anything by it but it was strange he spill on his shirt then. Then later in the break room I smell his brunswick stew on his shirt though and it made me hungry for it again haha.

Dear Shane: Your food sucks especially your stew. Sincerely Tom

Melears in Union City was the champ when I was growing up. We used to drive down from Norcross when I was a kid. Williamson Bros. is too sweet (ate there yesterday). I still am solidly in the Wallace’s corner though I am definitely going to start making the rounds to try Mrs T’s and Fresh Aire.

The orginal Old Hickory House – if you grew up in Atlanta in the 60s and 70s – you all know it was and always will be the best!

I lived in Atlanta area for 22 years. Tried many Brunswick Stews. Nothing comes close to Ole Hickory House in Tucker. I now live in Greenville, SC. Every time I’m in Atlanta, I eat it again.
