Dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman says, “The AJC has printed the recipe not once, but twice in our food pages, and it remains one of our readers’ favorites on accessAtlanta.com. Owner David Roberts uses rigatoni pasta, coats it with sharp cheddar, Monterey jack and Parmesan cheeses and lots of heavy cream, then bakes it until it melds into a mass of oozing, cheesy, almost unidentifiable heaven.”

Wow this one’s tough. My vote would have to go to Dave Poe’s BBQ on Whitlock in Marietta (Formerly Sam & Dave’s 2). But the Mac ‘n’ Cheese at South City Kitchen is also great. There’s no one right way to do this dish, so this should be interesting.

So, for all you guys touting Community BBQ? Have you tried Dave Poe’s (i.e. Sam & Dave’s 2) also? Perhaps this isn’t the best forum for my query, but I’m hoping you can comment on the similarities/differences between the two. I know the Community recipe originated at Sam & Dave’s, but was it changed along the way?

I just brought mine from home for lunch today, see I do not go out and buy anything that I can make better. I go out to be treated to something delish, that I don’t make – know what I mean? and if it has velvetta in it, it is NOT Macaroni and CHEESE – it is mac and something else. If you put ham and/or onions in it then it becomes a casserole, NOT Macaroni and Cheese – and My Momma makes it better than me. Peace

One correction: Dave Poe’s BBQ’s Mac and Cheese is the best in Cobb and Community Q is the best in Decatur. Big rigatoni noodles, three cheeses, and heavy cream—Can I get a witness! The recipe was originally created by Dave Roberts (owner of Community Q) when he and Dave Poe were in business together. The two guys are still good friends.

Mac and cheese is easy: whoever puts these ingredients together has something excellent: good noodles, butter, milk or cream, cheese – maybe some toasted butter toast on top if you want to be authentic. then salt and pepper. Note, though, these ingredients are pretty deadly: cholesterol, fat, and so on…..

In addition to his BBQ my Daddy also makes a mean mac & cheese casserole. It’s so much better than any stupid restaurant on this list, he likes to call it the ‘9th wonder of the world’ (his BBQ is the 8th). Unfortunately though when my uncle’s around (which has been a lot lately-personal issues) he can’t make it. We’ve caught my uncle on not one but two different occasions pulling an American Pie on Daddy’s mac & cheese on the kitchen counter. The last time was on Christmas day and kids saw so…. we have to keep mac & cheese away from him.

For a dark horse selection, my partner recommends the Mac ‘n’ Cheese at Waterhaven at Technology Square. It probably would not be a contender for the best, but it is probably the best organic of its kind. Very unique.
For all those recommending Fox Bros., I’m a little perplexed. Theirs is a competent Mac ‘n’ Cheese, and the paprika does add a little something. But overall I find it dull and uninspired. People I know who are big fans of Fox Bros. (i.e. they eat there 1-2 times a week) warned me away from it on my first visit. But it’s edible. I get it whenever I go. But it’s not spectacular.
And I’m sorry, but mixing it with the Brunswick Stew does not a good Mac ‘n’ Cheese make. Just my humble opinion–YMMV.

Well, I’m kinda partial to my own. But that said, I really like Strickland’s in Athens (on the Atlanta Highway beyond the mall). It’s not on the menu every day, but it is the best I’ve had in a restaurant. Hope that counts as Atlanta “area” as I have not been to any of the places in Atlanta proper that you folks have listed.
