OUR PICKS

1) MF Buckhead

Dining critic Meridith Ford Goldman says, “MF Buckhead has done something that no other restaurant in Atlanta has ever done on such a grand scale. Its 8,000 square feet of jaw-dropping space has finally combined the big, bold Buckhead look that Atlanta loves with an absolutely incomparable dining experience. No detail — from the perfect thickness of the wooden chopsticks to the amazing sake list — has been ignored. But it is the sushi bar — and incredibly fresh fish cut perfectly — that is the beating heart of this restaurant.”

3) Taka Sushi Café

4) Tomo Japanese Restaurant

5) Sushi House Hayakawa

@Genki is Terrible: I couldn’t agree more, except I prefer Taka over Huku. Taka is near to what the old Soto used to be. The quality is outstanding and the fish is the freshest I’ve tasted (I hadn’t “tasted” Mackerel until I had it at Taka). But bring a biiiiig wallet – it’s gotten very expensive (although all sushi has of late). I took my teen daughter there for a treat and the bill for the 2 of us was over $100!! Unfortunately, I haven’t been back since – I miss it.

Hands down the best sushi – is at MF SUSHI – the Sushi there tastes fresh in comparison to other places I even eaten in Atlanta. I prefer the location on Ponce. The Buckhead location is a nice place to take a gathering of friends…

2nd place award goes to Steel on W. Peachtree

I go to Strip for Sushi once a week – it’s pretty decent – Plus, they have 1/2 Off Sushi on Tues & Thurs afterwork for an hour or so…

& Ru Sans is a joke! They are like the McDonald’s of Sushi – you end up there because they’re located every few miles & it’s cheaply priced…but, it’s horrible – I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a health hazard…

Circle Sushi!!!! By far the best in Atlanta. Tanaka is bland. Genki is sub-par. Ru-Sans is gross. The only other place that even comes close to Circle Sushi is a little sushi restaurant in the old Stein Mart shopping Center at the corner of Jones Bridge and State Bridge (Cant remember the name). And to whomever mentioned the Lobster House near North Point Mall, they do a fab job as far as buffet sushi goes! But hands down, Circle Sushi is the BEST!!!

Well I’m glad no one has mentioned the best ITP sushi place, near Lenox. It’s small and generally quiet and filled with Japanese people and I’d like to keep it that way. Anyone who knows, knows!

Tomo on Cobb Parkway (Vinings). Best sushi I’ve ever had. It’s expensive, but worth every penny. For a less extravagant (but delicious) meal, Umezono on Cobb Parkway (Smyrna). Also, the Strawberry Fields Roll and the Tuna Tower at Slate (Midtown) are absolutely amazing.

Without a doubt, STEEL in Midtown. I’ve been to every joint in Atlanta. Try Steel’s volcano roll and Mt. Fuji roll. They are simply outstanding.

I like either MF location. I also like Sushi Huku. Huku is more of a traditional neighborhood place, full of Japanese people. The quality is outstanding, it is no less expensive than MF, just a different atmosphere.

Miyako on the East-West Connector in Cobb Cty. The sushi is is amazing. Beautiful presentation with fresh flowers and fruit. I always feel like I’m eating a work of art. The seaweed salad is the best, too.

Sushi Huku, Hashiguchi, and Tomo offer the best AUTHENTIC Japanerse-style sushi in Atlanta. MF, of course is wonderful, but I prefer the Izakaya feel and price point of the others. The “sushi” on the menu at places like Genki, Ru-san’s and Aja is completely westernized does not even begin to resemble anything I EVER saw during my years living in Japan.

Mori House at the corner of Peachtree Ind. and Suwanee Dam Road is my choice! The volcano roll is insane.

For the poster talking about Walton Co. sushi places, Suki is the only choice over there in Loganville. To my knowledge, there is nothing in Monroe except for the Japanese steakhouse at 138 near 78. As far as Athens is concerned, I heard that Shokitini is good.

Sushi House Hiyakawa is the best. I cannot believe nobody has mentioned it yet. Shogun Japanese Steakhouse in Duluth is excellent for sushi, but often overlooked due to it being mostly a steakhouse.

I second Haru Ichiban in Gwinnett. It was voted Atlanta’s Best New Restaurant in Bon Appetit magazine sometime in 2005. Outstanding all around!

Harry and Sons is the best bang for your buck by far. MF has the freshest fish but is pricey even for generic cheap maki, i.e. california rolls, tuna rolls, etc. Chin Chin on Howell Mill is pretty decent if you’re in the mood for Chinese and a roll or two on the side.

phew i kept scrolling to see if someone mentioned sushi house hayakawa and couldn’t find it til the very end! they def have my vote- pricey but well worth it!

Genki? Yuck!

Just to reiterate all that has been said, if you like MF Buckhead, Steel, Aja or any other places like that you are superficially basing how good you think your sushi is on how much it costs. I’ve eaten at MF Buckhead half a dozen times now, and have not been impressed by anything on the menu.except for the price. It’s good, and certainly among the best in Atlanta, but you can get much better at half the price.

The consensus of people “in the know” on here is that Tomo, Taka, Huku, and MF Ponce are the best places ITP. Can’t say I trust the fish once you get outside the city (i.e. Roswell, Alpharetta, etc.).

My vote goes to Sri Thai in Snellville. Although they are a Thai restaurant, their sushi quality is fantastic. Some of the freshest fish in the southeast.

Where else can you get your sushi made by a monk (the owner is a Buddhist monk)? 8-)

Starish on Peachtree is my favorite. The fish is always fresh and they have a great selection. You can either go with the intent of spending a lot on some creative rolls or you can spend just a little by ordering some basic rolls. The greatest thing about Starfish is the people. They are very friendly and genuine. I actually feel a little guilty when I eat sushi somewhere else!
