The El Torero restaurants are my favorite. The special stuffed chicken quesadillas are wonderful. The chips and salsa are the best. They need to open one up in the Loganville area.

LA PARRILLA MEXICAN RESTAURANT. Authentic food (nothing from a can) best margaritas. I recommend the La Parrilla Margarita, you will only need a couple of those, and you’ll be singing and dancing with the live music they have on the weekends. Fast service, friendly, but most of all, Excellent food. I know of 3 locations I’ve been to; Powder Springs (my favorite one) Marietta (close to the Marietta Square), Marietta (close to crossing of Dallas Hwy. and Barrett Pkwy), and there’s one in Alpharetta off of exit 12 (?), and one in Stockbridge. You have to get there before seven if you don’t want to wait, or if you don’t mind waiting get there when the crowd gets there!!! It’s a lot more fun and more festive!

Unequivocably, Taqueria Del Sol. Not such a big fan of Mexican food, TDS offers dishes not drowned in greasy red stuff and covered in a pound of cheese. Cinco has restaurants in Alpharetta, Duluth, and Vickery (near Polo Fields & Cumming). They are upscale, very nicely decorated, and have an innovative menu. They don’t get their food off of the same truck as the rest of the Mexican restaurants. They have soft taco choices with grilled steak, fried chicken, or fried fish, all wonderful. They have a number of other interesting dishes, a good grilled salmon dish, and good drinks. Live entertainment on weekends. Entrees range from $10 to $15.

Nuevo Laredo is mediocre at best…I pass by it every day and for the life of me cannot understand the line. It seems that it is mostly a hang-out for people who think it is cool to go there because it’s on the ‘edgy’ west side…I live on the west side and trust me, it’s not ‘edgy’, just a dump.

For Tex-Mex I think a better choice is Jalisco in Peachtree Battle or Cazadores on Johnson Ferry.

For somewhat more authentic fare Bone Garden Cantina is excellent…plus it’s on the ‘edgy’ west side without the line of poseurs standing out front.

Did someone really put ‘Pure’ down here?

It’s sad that no one seems to realize that the Mexicans are using their restaurants in a plot to take over our nation. They are slowly infiltrating our society and culture and soon enough we will no longer be the ‘US of A’ but North Mexico. Get ready folks. Instead of George Washington and Abe Lincoln, our kids will be learning about Pablo and Jorge. And forget about Mastercard and Visa as a method of payment, if you want something you’ll need to be toting your pesos. And don’t think they’ll stop with us either, they will one day dominate the world. They understand that food is the way to a man’s soul and they are out to steal all of our souls. Wake up folks, we’ve got to do something!!!!!!!

Being from Texas, I’ve had a hard time finding authentic Mexican food here. Unfortunately, it’s doctored for the masses with the ever-present red sauce and cheese – not always typical of homecooked Mexican. For great Tex-Mex, I go to Pappasito’s and Uncle Julios – both Dallas/Fort Worth traditions. If you are ever in south GA, just off 75 in Cordele is a great place called El Girasol (the sunflower). Es auténtico y muy delicioso – salud!

In Covington, at I-20 Exit 90 you’ll find “Pacho’s” . . . not a chain, come on in and meet Pacho. FAB food and very generous Margaritas. Their steak fajitas make my knees weak . . . the fresh-made-daily roasted tomato salsa is the very best ever.

Nuevo Laredo is an over-hyped yuppie hell-hole. Average at best. Their cheese is obviously Velveeta.

La Parilla in Alpharetta is the best mex in the city. Everything fresh, nothing from a can. And they hire intelligent, hard-working servers.

It’s always clean, Margaritas are not too sweet, and the mariachi band takes requests.

I’m amazed to see Nuevo Laredo so often. It’s truly no better than El Azteca or any other generic Americanized Mexican food. It scores with atmosphere and crowds, but the food is sorely boring and over rated. In fact, it’s the most over rated place in Atlanta. Have I stirred the pot yet?

If you want outstanding Mexican, you have to try two places; Pure Taqueria (my personal favorite) and Bone Garden, a new place off Howell Mill, not far from Nuevo.

Pure’s menu is off-the-hook. The Crab Fritters, Salmon Tostopos are just the start of something truly special. Don’t get me started on their Queso Fundido with Chorizo and roasted jalepeno.

A new Pure Taqueria location opened up across from Fritti’s in Inman Park.

After reading some of the other comments, I’ll have to agree that Nuevo Laredo (except for the tamles) has yuppie food, but the fun, lively atmosphere makes it worth the trip.

JIMBOB, I agree with you about Monterrey and El Toro at Northlake, but I don’t see that Eduardoes is any different. Monterrey is my favorite of the 3 mediocres, mainly because we’ve been going there for 20 years and our daughters still crave it on occasion(even though they both live downtown where all the really cool restaurants are, they still want to come out to Northlake for Monterrey. Go figure.)

And the fish tacos and shrimp corn chowder at Taqueria del Sol are good, if you don’t mind standing in a long line out the door like sheep, then giving your order to a snarly, ungrateful hipster-nazi. Nuevo Laredo is great Tex Mex, but it is by no means authentic Mexican Food. Taco Veloz is a very authentic Taqueria and quite good–especially for the price. El Rocio in East Point and Mi Barrio in Cabbagetown are pretty authentic full service Mexican restaurants and are both quite good. Adventurous California style fare can be enjoyed at Holy Taco (East Atlanta), Raging Burrito (Decatur) and Taqueria Del Sol which has several locations…and was fairly recently voted by Bon Appetit Magazine as the 2nd best Taqueria in the country.

Chonas Mexican Grill located in a strip mall adjacent to Discover Mills has some surprisingly great food. I crave their Alambre with big chunks of juicy beef and crispy fried bacon – after all isn’t everything better with bacon. I also love the Pollo Espinaca. Huge tender chicken breasts topped with cheese, sauteed spinach and mushrooms. Yumlicious! They also offer a very good Carnitas plate with marinated slow roasted pork. The Texas Margaritas are superbly potent. You can also join their e-mail group and they will send you monthly coupons as well a certificate for a free birthday dinner. Sweet!

Melissa’s mom,

It’s all subjective of course, although I and a few other yelpers think that Eduardos is better. When I last ate at Monterrey, none of the food had any flavor.

Eduardos could use a little more heat, but I don’t think the Tucker clientele goes for that. To each his own, but to me the food at Eduardos has seemed a bit hotter/fresher tastier.

No doubt La Parrilla is good food. Funny story about them. We used to go to the one in Woodstock. One day, the manager disappeared. What happened to him? Nobody said. Then one night we saw him working at Pappasito’s. I asked him what he was doing there. He was surprised to see me and said, “Uh, I want to open my own place one day.” Later on, he’s the manager at La Parrilla again. What the? He finally confided, “I was spying. The owner of the chain is infatuated with Pappasito’s, so I got a job there to see how they do things.”

I also don’t get the whole Nuevo Laredo thing. I have been there on multiple occasions and been disappointed each time. Nuevo Laredo is HUGELY overated! It reminds me of eating at Chi-chi’s when I was a kid. Nobody ever has a reasonable reason as to why they keep going back there, they just say: “It’s always busy so it must be good”. Please don’t defend it by telling me that their margaritas or sangria is good. I challenge you to find restaurant like Neuvo Laredo that serves “bad maragaritas and sangria”.

Bone Garden Cantina on the so called edgy west side blows Nuevo Laredo out of the water. Mi Barrio in Grant Park has great food as well.

Branch out people, try someplace other than Neuvo Laredo and see what you’re missing.

Nuevo Laredo must pay for every post with its name. B/c U take the workers from the back and turn them into greeters and waiters does not make it a “authentic” Mexican restaurant. Overpriced menu for fast food quality is the only thing NL can boost. Mr. Chance Evans you need to try La Oaxaquena (605 Mt. Zion Rd. Jonesboro 30236). Can we say in-house handmade tortillas; VARITY of fresh salsas made daily, and guess what Mexicans actually eat there.

The Bridge Gourmet in Roswell, GA is the best Mexican food I have eaten. The food is cooked to order, so your food is fresh and hot. The Texas margarita’s are the best also. Go for a visit and I think you will keep returning. The staff is the greatest as well.

So many Mexican restaurants, it’s difficult to stand out. One restaurant that does is The Bridge in Roswell. Very tasty selections (chicken tamales are awesome!) and everything is made from very fresh ingredients. If you’re looking for fresh, gourmet Mexican, The Bridge is the best around!

Adobo Taqueria and Tequila Bar in Alpharetta is by far the best OTP Mexican restaurant around! I’ve eaten at Nuevo Laredo many times, but Adobo beats NL hands down! Adobo’s food is consistently fresh, perfectly cooked, expertly seasoned and reasonably priced. The margaritas are delicious. What more could you want from a Mexican restaurant? Oh, and their chips and salsa are perfect… as is their flan… and their tapas… and lunch specials… and dinner specials… and wait staff… and atmosphere (kid friendly).

Chepe’s Mexican grill for sure Wife and I have been there 4 times in the past 6 weeks. Really great authentic Mexican food. Everything is fresh. My wife’s “test” dish at Mexican restaurants has been the Chiles Rellenos . These passed her test with flying colors. Wait staff is very friendly. Prices are very reasonable with excellent value. The Mexican shrimp soup came loaded with shrimp. We will be back… again and again.

I hate to break it to everyone, but you will not find the best Mexican food in the ATL in any restaurant. For the best, you must find the father of my friend TYLER PIKE. He took his homemade slow-and-low pulled pork and slapped together some smoked carnitas tacos with a memphis mole sauce that would blow your head clean off.

Chepe’s? Isn’t that the place where the guy ate a couple of ground beef tacos and didn’t even make it out of the restaurant before he collapsed on the floor right in the doorway and began uncontrollably defecating and vomiting all over himself, and they just ripped a pancho off the wall and threw it on him until the paramedics came, and the whole time while people were waiting for the paramedics, every few minutes you could see the pancho convulse, and then a rivulet of brown liquid would run out from under the pancho onto the floor? or was that some other place?

The new Mi Mexico in Loganville off Hwy 78 is wonderful, such a different flavor than the other mexican place around the area. Atlanta’s best kept food secret is Loganville’s Rancheo on US 78 across from the bowling alley. Its chicken-rice soup is to die for. Comes with abundant white meat, rice and tomatoes. Accompanied by delicious pico de gallo, tortillas, and avocado which can all be dumped into the soup…and a half fresh lime for even more flavor. Been eating all Mexican there for over a decade. Reasonable prices and wonderful service among its veteran crew. Y’all come amigos, hear~?

In fact, I wish that if you haven’t tried at least 50 different Mexican restaurants in Atlanta and the surrounding cities I wish you’d shut your pie-holes. I mean, what’s the best Mex … most of us probably just think … hmm, of the 3 that are in a 5 mile radius of my house, this one or that one is the least offensive. Seriously, The Bridge Mexican Gourmet is great. Nuevo Laredo is good, Zocalo is good, Tara Humata is aight, Pure Taqueria is crap, CANS is Pure with a different name but is slightly better just because it’s not actually Pure …

Being from Texas I know a thing or two about Mexican food. Atlanta doesn’t have true Mexican food, alot of Cuban and Puerto Rican. For great, Texas inspired Mexican, straight from the border, try Uncle Julios. They have won many awards, even winning Best Mexican in Dallas/Ft. Worth where there’s wonderful food on every corner. It’s a little pricy but nothing beats fresh salsa and tortilla’s and by the way, in Mexico they use yellow cheese, not white!
