It’s hard to give anyone the nod over Souper Jenny, but Mitch’s crew over at MetroFresh has some of the most delicious soups I’ve ever had! I believe they have a lot of the same recipe’s, so it may be a toss up. But at the end of the day, when I want delicious soup in Atlanta, I head straight to MetroFresh!!

If I’m craving soup, I head over to Buford Hwy and have some pho at Pho Bac. If I’m with friends, a trip to Mini Hot Pot (across from Pho Bac) is awesome! Its like the personal fondue version of soup. Each seat has a hot plate for the broth to heat up and plates of veggies, seafood and meats come on the side. You drop in what you want, add seasonings or sauces if you prefer, and enjoy! So fun and delicious!

Broad Street Cafe, located downtown in the Fairlie Poplar district, has fantastic soups. My favorite is the heavenly creamy mushroom with brie, followed closely by the roasted red pepper and seafood varieties. (There are, I believe, about six choices total.) Their homemade crab cake sandwich makes a great accompaniment.

Chili probably doesn’t count in a soup blog, but if it did, I’d also recommend the hearty vegan chili at Rainbow Natural Foods (N. Decatur & Clairemont).

Mexican – Chicken & Rice Soup @ Sangria’s Mexican Cafe in Tucker

American – Souper Jenny – hands down. great grilled cheese too.

Chinese – Many about equal in this category but dragon express in brookhaven for hot and sour, Garden Inn in Lilburn for Sizzling Rice and Hunan Inn in Doraville for Egg Drop

Brunswick Stew get’s it’s own category – There are many good ones out there but I’m gonna give the lifetime achievement award to The Old Hickory House in Northlake.

I gotta agree with the various voices chiming in for pho. Nothing like a VAT of hot broth with fresh veggies, fragrant herbs and slurpy noodles. A bite of heat from fresh chilis or a variety of chili sauces hits you to the top of your head. Best of all, a top note of lime to accent the fresh flavors.

I miss the long gone pho hoa binh on Cheshire. A guy walking past your table with half a pig over his shoulder just added ambience.

It depends on what soup you are getting. Every place has different soups that they’re good at, almost no place is an expert at multiple kind of soup. I’ve tried soup at nearly every restaurant I’ve been to before and I have some odd observations. My two favorite soups are french onion and baked potato. They are the best at two different places. Panera Bread has the BEST baked potato soup in the world, but it is far better if you get it in the bread bowl. Now as for the french onion soup, it is best at an odd restaurant. It is the best at Applebee’s, or it used to be. Now they have added extra cheese on top, but you can ask for it without the extra cheese and it is the same old, delicious bowl of soup! Kind of odd, I know, but VERY, VERY good!
