anything roasted by batdorf & bronson is world class. their coffee is served at:

-aurora
-dancing goats (they have a different blend than aurora)
-@ bacchanalia (french pressed)
-outwrite bookstore (although, i don’t think they brew it correctly, it’s not as good)

batdorf & bronson (despite their pompous lawyeresque names) roast coffee on par with such titans as stumptowns coffee out of portland, and ritual roasters or blue bottle in san francisco. batdorf & bronson has the best coffee in the city. there is no question and it is not up for debate. except maybe burger king. ahem.

if the question where ‘who has the best coffee shop’, the choice wouldn’t be so clear. i guess i would vote san francisco coffee roaster’s south ponce location.

Octane coffee. Their cappuccino is THE BEST. The baristas have mastered the art of foamed milk. It always reminds me why I order au laits or lattes elsewhere, to avoid dry, poorly executed foamed milk. Also good eco-citizens. They are an outlet for Counter Culture Coffee — fresh roasted, lovely blends or micro lots, and good for my socially conscious soul . . .

Dancing Goats in Decatur is by far the best.

I don’t live nearby, so for my usual coffee fix, the best near my home (Roswell) is Dunkin Donuts.

Land of a Thousand Hills is also nice, but quality varies by who is working and the location is good for weekends only because of the HWY 9 traffic. If you go here, plan to stay and enjoy your own french press in house.

I miss Joe Muggs, in the old Boomershine Pontiac building (where Orvis is now on Peachtree Road near Piedmont). They were the only place in town that actually served J. Martinez coffee.

J. Martinez, which is sold at Alon’s and Whole Foods by the pound, is the best. Second is Batdorf & Bronson, which is also sold at Alon’s and Star Provisions (”Dancing Goats” is their signature blend, hence the name of the coffee shops).

Back in 1996, my entire office was hooked on Dancing Goats, that we bought by the pound at the coffee shop in the walkway connecting the IBM Building to the parking deck. One day we came back from a big group lunch, and everyone was talking about how they “sure could go for some Dancing Goats.” The CFO was in the elevator with us and thought we were talking about some sort of illegal drugs!

Where you can Have your Karaoke and Coffee Too. The Singin’ Bean Coffeehouse in Historic Lawrenceville has the freshest cup of coffee espresso’s and lattes. The beans are Roasted Fresh from Viazza Coffee often times the bag is delivered the bags are still warm. The key to a great cup of joe is the freshness of the cup.

Java Vino has some of the best coffee in atlanta, they roast their own beans – and they are literally theri own beans as they get them from their own coffee plantation in South America. Dirty Nekked Guy is a great blend, and their espresso is out of this world. Has a great nutty flavor to it. They also have some of the best prices out there with a great, I mean GREAT loyalty program.

As a resident of Decatur, I have the good fortune of having within less than a mile Dancing Goats, The Dekalb Farmer’s Market and Starbucks. The Emory Village is less than 10 minutes away depending on traffic. That being said, sometimes you just have to save some money and buy coffee at the grocery store. I like Chock Full of Nuts and Eight O’clock coffee and even the bag brand of Dunkin Doughnuts. However I feel the quality of your coffee maker is as important as the coffee you buy. That makes a big difference.

From my own experience, Dunkin has one of the best cups in town and I’m also a fan of the coffee at DeKalb Farmers Market. And let’s face it, the VAST majority of people really only drink Starbucks because it was the trendy thing to do in the 90s. Octane has done more to raise the bar for espresso and specialty coffee than almost any other shop in the southeast. Octane baristas have dominated the southeast regional barista championships and done more to represent the south at the national level than anyone else I can think of. All the barista awards would mean nothing if they didn’t care about the coffee, though. Luckily, they have a very close working relationship with Counter Culture and do a spectacular job of highlighting the work of a select group of the world’s most respected coffee growers.

I’m surprised more people haven’t suggested Atlanta Coffee Roasters in the Toco Hills plaza (I only saw one mention on the first page of posts).

They’re apparently the best kept secret in town – they roast beans on site, and they have a HUGE variety of coffee beans to choose from, including flavored and decaf beans. And for those espresso drinkers, you name it (capp, latte, etc.), they serve it along with a decent selection of chai and other non-coffee drinks.

The owner buys directly from small, independently owned farms and works hard to get the word out to other independent coffee roasters when he finds farmers that need business. Few people realize it, but Starbucks is the ultimate corporate evil, buying up the coffee farms from the farmers (for pitifully little cash), which leaves the farmers without a livelihood once the cash runs out and forces out independnet coffee roasters because they have very limited farms from which to buy their beans. Starbucks can claim to sell “fair trade” coffee all they want, but they’re full of it.

My husband and I LOVE ACR (obviously!) and we won’t buy our beans anywhere else.

Octane. I’ve been a fan since they first opened. They have evolved perfectly, I just wish the space was a little bigger.

I’ve never seen a coffee shop in the south care so much about quality coffee. Tony (the owner) and his fleet of baristas are simply ahead of the pack in driving a culture of community around their product.

Also, Java Vino and Java Monkey. But those are on rare days.

My vote goes to Land of 1000 Hills in Roswell. The smell of them roasting their beans hits you as you drive into the parking lot. I’ve been going there since they opened a couple of years ago and never had a bad cup. They do a lot to support fair trade in Rwanda and also support a number of local initiatives as well. I live behind Land of A Thousand Hills in Roswell and can assure you that all the beans are roasted on the premise. The historic old house was renovated beautifully and a large stone patio was built. Live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Very good coffee and they are very involved in the community and in Rwanda. Everyone’s a winner at this place.

Isn’t it nice that we can get such great coffee in this city? And so many choices – not just QT, Dunkin Donuts and Starbuck’s.

I’ll support any and all the locally owned and operated places as long as they aren’t serving swill.

In no particular order –
Anyplace serving Counter Culture coffee
Anyplace serving Batdorf & Bronson coffee
Anyplace serving J Martinez coffee
***New Favorite – La Columbe out of Philly – some say best coffee in Eastern US *** – don’t know if anyone locally serves it
Anyplace doing in-house roasting (1000 Hills, Java Vino, etc)

And if up to it – get a variety of green coffee beans, a Behmoor 1600, a decent burr grinder and expresso machine and taste the wonders of freshly roasted beans at home!

I was surprised to find out on their website http://www.southernaromacoffee.com that they started in Atl before locating to MS. They are usually found in high end places (like The Aluvian) but I wish they would open a local retail coffee shop. This stuff is special!!

Living in Decatur, I have to say Dancing Goats, even though I’ve only been once (great parking, too, although you can’t drink the concrete). Duck’s Donuts are a nice extra. Urban Griounds in Avondale Estates would be second. I’ve done my share of Starbuck’s and QT because I’m a java junkie and they’re just too convienent. Gotta give SF Coffee a big thumbs down–went for a mocha (ok, not exactly espresso) and was told that all sizes have the same number of shots–one. Huh? Too bad because there’s one next to one of my favorite pet stoes–Highland Pet Supply. I really think DeKalb Farmer’s has the best beans.

Octane Coffee (Westside & Emory) hands down! For so many reasons! Their brewed coffee (french press and chemex) and espresso tastes and looks amazing! Not only do they use a great roaster–Counter Culture–they also understand each coffee they brew and are consistent and super passionate about what they do. They also make their own caramel, chocolate, and vanilla sauce in house. Yum and no artificial flavors! They are also great at building community and providing a relaxed atmosphere, which to me, is just as important to the enjoyment of my morning cup.

Miss the coffeehouses in ATL (believe it or not, DC is just catching up in terms of non-Starbucks cafes). My votes go for:

Inman Perk (miss the old location with an actual patio, though)
Land of a Thousand Hills (even without the direct-trade angle some of the best coffee available)
Dr. Bombay’s in Candler Park (cool place even if the staff drama can be a bit…volatile)

But honestly, for pure great coffee, please do yourselves a favor and go to Athens. 1000 Faces Roasters has officially slapped to the floor Batdorf, Counter Culture and Jittery Joe’s. Go to 2 Cups (nevermind the clientele) and order a French press immediately.

Also, if you said Starbucks or QT, I invite you to promptly become An Hero. (look it up.) You are like people who troll beer discussions and post “LOL WUT I LIEK CORONA” because it’s never occurred to you that beer should be palatable without putting fruit in it.

A good option many people dont know about is Get Coffee in Chamblee. I use that MARTA station on occasion and the coffee is very good, priced well and the people are very friendly.

For chains, Dunkin Donuts is superb. Not as much variety in the flavor but really, really good coffee.

Anything by Batdorf & Bronson (Dancing Goats, Aurora) is my first, second and third choice. I worked for Starb*cks in the ’90s and watched them discard all their quality standards one by one in the name of volume, volume, volume. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

And funny as in sounds, QT actually does have some decent coffee, their procedures are sound (mostly) and with the volume they serve, it’s not likely to have been sitting very long. I’ll stop there if I’m in a hurry.

I just don’t get the love of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. I am not a hater of their coffee, but find the roast extremely light. I just look for a bit more flavor or robust roast. It could be becuase I drink mine straight up black, so I need a bit more than their basic coffee has. I added I shot of espresso once, and that helped, but it is still very one dimensional.

Actually, one that no one mentioned was Norstrom at Perimeter. There coffee is far superior that Starbucks could ever imagine. Starbucks rests on their laurels which has been inflated for some many years. The “hit & miss” places around town are just that.

I cannot tell you what Norstrom does to their coffee or beans, but it is delicious. I am (for the most part) a decaf drinker. Starbucks now will not make any decaf coffee on weekends unless you plan on drinking a potful. They are too snooty to make a potful of decaf.

Target Brand Sumatra is great when I make it. If you purchase the nice little coffee cups that look like Starbucks – you would think you got it from a gourmet coffee shop…. ummmm ummm

The best is QT. Second best would be Dunkin Donuts ( if you don’t allow them to add sugar.) they use waaaaay too much. About 12 years ago, there was a good place in East Atlanta called sacred grounds. They were very good also. Don’t know if it is still there.

The general public in Atlanta, with their lower middle class and prole sentiments, can always be relied upon to demonstrate a high level of sophistication for the finer pleasures of life such as their number one pick for the best coffee in the city – a lousy donut franchise. Come on folks! Aurora is the best. Dunkin Donuts? Please.

People laugh, but Dunkin Donuts has some pretty GOOD coffee. San Fransico coffee in the Hightlands are very good. I’ve been going to SF Coffee House before they moved to the otherside of V. Highlands. If I didn’t know what good coffee tasted like, Starsucks would be a favorite but Starsuck’s coffee has a burn’t; bitter taste.

I realllllly love Danneman’s, it’s become my favorite coffee in Atlanta. I went in once for my first cup and I loved the service, then I tasted the coffee and it was amazing. Dannemans has my vote!

For me Starbucks provides the best brew in a consistent basis. I consume coffee a lot so I purchase whole beans and grind them at the store. My favorite coffee these days is the Starbucks Espresso blend. I like both, the regular and decaf for later in the day. I’ve tried many different roasts and brews including all the ones mentioned by others. I’ve tried Dunking Donuts brew and it’s not for me. Actually the McDonalds coffee can be much better but it’s extremely variable from store to store. Say what you will, I tried many, but I keep going back to Starbucks…

#1- Definately Dancing Goats… great coffee, baristas and comfy environment. Their staff definately welcomes you and executes top-notch beverages!

#2- OCTANE… Amazing baristas who are top performers in the coffee circuit. I just wish they would use better coffee than Counter Culture.

What is wrong with you people? Starbucks? Caibou? Waffle House?? Give me a damn break. SF Roasting Co. BY FAR has the best drip coffee in atlanta. The morningside blend is incredible. Also, batdorf and bronson have the best beans (try it in a french press, it’s…unholy good!) Also, like many others have stated, Octane definitely has the best baristas/ espresso drinks.

Café Campesino Atlanta has just opened in the Sweet Auburn (Curb) Market, and their coffee is delicious! I had an espresso there and they did it just right. You kind of have to be looking for them, though, since they’re tucked away off the street in a bit of a no man’s land; you’d never see it walking or driving by. At Edgewood and Jesse Hill Jr. I think.

Cafe Campesino Atlanta. Fair trade, organic, locally-roasted and delicious. Inside the Sweet Auburn Curb Market. A cool little scene. 209 Edgewood, right behind Grady Hospital and near GSU Marta Station.
