Best up-and-coming local band or musician

This was a showdown between the top two artists, who both had some motivated fans. Unhindered and Rhonda Thomas accounted for more than 76 percent of the votes cast, but in the end, Christian rockers Unhindered emerged with a few hundred more votes than soul-jazz vocalist Thomas.

And since we had six picks from readers — due to a tie during the nomination process — we thought it was only fair to have six staff picks.

We say, “This is what Atlanta sounds like, if you put all of our city’s musical ingredients into a big funky blender. It’s soulful, psychedelic, hook-filled and, as the band’s debut album puts it, “Southern Gothic.” You’ll be hearing more from this Atlanta supergroup, because the Constellations recently signed with Virgin Records.

While they have had some great success this year, the Zac Brown Band still isn’t widely enough known. They get my vote.

Rhonda Thomas…a vocal powerhouse. Jaspects are good too, but as overall entertainers.

Wayde Powell III. He can play ANYTHING! He is the most talented and awesome musician I have ever heard. He plays bluegrass, jazz, country, southern rock, gospel, and is writing a symphony for the Gainesville SO. He plays and tours with Honi Deaton and Dream, and has done some work with Brian Litrell of the Backstreet Boys fame. Amazing talent!

Wayde Powell – played with Runaway Coal Train at Peachtree Tavern several years ago. Plays with Honi Deaton now. Can play guitar, banjo, bass, dobro – you name it.

Winter Ransom is the best local rock band around Atlanta. Brilliant songs that get in your head and move your body! The members show dynamic range. They capture the many textured splendor of the sounds roaming inside their heads and expand them for us. Thanks boys! By the way look for them Oct. 8 2009. Look them up on facebook or myspace – come and see for yourself!

Tendaberry — having the most fun I’ve seen in a while from an Atlanta band. Familiar, yet novel. Costello meets Gang of Four meets the Smiths!

Giant Lion – a young band from Decatur that is starting to pick up steam. Not sure how to categorize them – experimental folk, hippie, country mix, but it works.

Vonnegutt is without a doubt one of the best up-and-coming bands around not only Atlanta but the state of Georgia. Their sound is a cross-genre mix of Hip-Hop,Electronica and Pop. They are Signed to Big Boi (half of Outkast) label Purple Ribbon Entertainment. They often work with producer Simon Illa.

Blackberry Smoke takes Southern Rock to a whole nother level! Cleaverly worded songs which are more than a little trashy reveal stories of love and woe. Great male vocal harmonies and tight instrumentations make this band one to watch. They have toured with Syknyrd and ZZ Top.

Wayde Powell with the Honi Deaton Band is the most amazing musician I have ever seen. If it has strings-he can make it scream for help. I have traveled from Tennessee, North Georgia to Alabama to watch him play and if you haven’t seen him yet..you are really missing out! If you can catch a glimpse of him somewhere playing the Lapsteel, you will be in a trance.
